Photo: Alex Cranz/Gizmodo As of January 4, 2021, Intel has started phasing out its 300-series chipsets. The company recently published a Product Change Notification detailing the end-of-life timeline for its chipsets that supports 8th and 9th generation Intel processors, and by the end of January 2022, the chipsets will be silicon history. The 2020 release of Intel’s 10th-gen CPUs and 400-series chipsets already spelled out retirement for the 300-series, but now it’s official. Today we’re taking a detailed look at how AMD’s Smart Access Memory (SAM) technology influences performance in a wide range of games. All in all, we plan to benchmark 36 games at 1080p, 1440p and 4K. While technically SAM is not an AMD-exclusive technology, they are the first to take advantage of the resizable Base Address Register or resizable BAR, a feature introduced with the PCIe 3.0 spec. For those of you not yet up to speed, SAM or resizable BAR defines how much of your graphics cards VRAM is to be mapped for access by the CPU. Typically the CPU can access up to 256 MB of mapped VRA...
It’s almost unfair at this point, but as long as Google keeps making Pixel ‘a’ phones, they’ll be the best budget phones you can buy. This year there are two models—the Pixel 4a for $349 and the Pixel 4a 5G for $499—but the difference is more than just the 5G modem. You get a larger screen, an extra ultrawide camera, and a faster processor with the 4a 5G—and for $150 more, it’s a no-brainer upgrade. Like the previous generation’s 3a, the 4a 5G has a plastic back and lacks wireless charging. On the other hand it offers an increasingly rare headphone jack, three years of Andro...
Back when AMD announced Smart Access Memory, it was said that only Zen3 processors would support it. Contrary to this, Asus and MSI were able to make it work on systems using AMD 400-series and 500-series motherboards equipped with Zen and Zen2 processors. Back when AMD said Smart Access Memory would only work with Zen3 processors, there were rumours that older Zen processors couldn’t handle it because they don’t support a special PDEP instruction at native speeds. According to Wccftech, this was then debunked by AMD itself, which said that this wasn’t the case, but the company didn’t...
