Students urge schools to extend academic break amid rising COVID-19 cases

Students urge schools to extend academic break amid rising COVID-19 cases

Following the government’s one-week extension of the enhanced community quarantine over "NCR Plus," students from different universities have kickstarted petitions and sent formal letters calling on their school administrations to extend the academic break in light of the surge in COVID-19 cases in the country.
Several universities have so far taken the initiative to suspend synchronous and asynchronous classes, including the University of Santo Tomas, which extended its academic break to April 11.
Echoing similar concerns last 2020 during the first nationwide lockdown, university student councils urged administrations to recognize the impacts the surge in COVID-19 cases have left on other students and faculty.

With anti-terror law, red-tagged campus press struggle to report during pandemic

With anti-terror law, red-tagged campus press struggle to report during pandemic

Under the COVID-19 pandemic and the passage of the anti-terror law, the threats to campus publications take on a greater severity and pose serious challenges to student journalists' reportage.
This is on top of campus publications already being subjected to attacks and suppression, even by their own school administrations. The College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) has recorded almost 1,000 violations against campus press freedom since 2010.
Heightened harassment, red-tagging
Aside from universities, student publications are among the targets of the government’s red-tagging spree, after several were described as legal fronts of the communist movement without basis.

How can campus journalists strengthen their role as community watchdogs?
At a time when disinformation is rampant on social media platforms, several journalists suggested ways for campus publications to harness their role as truth-tellers during the last day of the Caloocan Young Leaders Initiative's (CYLI) online seminar-workshop on Saturday, March 27.
While campus publications often report stories on campus issues, resource persons at the Kalookan Para sa Kampus Midya" seminar-workshop showed student journalists how they can become megaphones of their respective communities as well.

The kasambahay's tale: A lifetime in quarantine

The kasambahay’s tale: A lifetime in quarantine

The coronavirus has made a tale of two cities of every well-off Filipino household. For middle-class homeowners, the global pandemic means working from home, an abundance of Zoom calls, gimmicks that got away, and the simple torture of having to stay still for what feels like a lifetime. For their house help, however, the quarantine is just another word for the lives they’ve already been living.
Lea*, Cristina*, and Marian* work as
kasambahays (house help) for a middle-class family living in a gated Marikina subdivision. Lea, 45, looks after the kids and cleans indoors; Cristina, 48, cooks every meal; and Marian, 58, cleans the gate and gardens, and cares for the family’s elderly.

Rappler CEO Maria Ressa and reporter Rambo Talabong went to court on Thursday, March 11, for a scheduled arraignment in a cyber libel case filed against them in connection with a Rappler investigative story that exposed a "thesis-for-sale" scam.
Through counsel Theodore Te, both asked the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 24 to reconsider its earlier decision not to dismiss the case. The motion prompted a rescheduling of the arraignment to April 8.
This is the 10th criminal case filed by the Philippine government against Ressa, 3 of which – this one included – are related to cyber libel.

This is a press release from the Alliance of Public Health Advocates.
Addressing the youth’s waning vaccine confidence through education and awareness, the Alliance of Public Health Advocates (ALPHA) trained youth leaders to formulate campaigns for effective health services.
Dubbed the Angat Kalusugan Operations (AKO) Initiative, the campaign seeks to promote education and awareness of vaccination, particularly on   Measles-Rubella Oral Polio Vaccine Supplementary Immunization Activity (MR-OPV-SIA) and COVID-19 vaccines. The campaign was launched on February 1.
Led by health advocates from San Pablo, Laguna, the Angat Kalusugan Operations Initiative features an online information drive, youth governance camp, and a health education camp titled “BakUNA MUNA.” The activities aim to address youth’s concerns about vaccination.
