Categories: drones - unmanned aerial systems - El Centro 1 December 2023

The global rise of drones has made vast changes to how countries wage war, spy on their enemies, and even deliver goods. Terrorist groups are also rapidly incorporating drone technology for intelligence, propaganda, and attack purposes. The impact of weaponized drone use has been felt in conflicts all over the world including the Russo-Ukraine war, conflicts in the Middle East, and now it has begun to enter Africa. There have been more struggles between governments and violent nonstate actors in Africa than anywhere in the world, and now that drones are actively being used by radical Islamist terrorist organizations in the continent, it is important to analyze how they have utilized drones since 2018 and how that usage may change via an indications and warning (I&W) perspective.

South Sudan: Dashed hopes after 10 years of independence
South Sudan's 10 years as an independent country have been marked by pervasive insecurity, a catastrophic humanitarian crisis and endemic corruption.
South Sudan split from Sudan in 2011
The euphoria following South Sudan's independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011 was short-lived.
Less than a year and a half later, the resource-rich country was plunged into a brutal civil war, at a cost of almost 400,000 lives.
As a result of the civil war, 1.6 million people of the country's 11 million people are currently displaced within South Sudan while more than 2 million South Sudanese have sought refuge in other nations.

Seasoned South African diplomat is new UNMISS boss

defenceWeb
Written by defenceWeb -
New UNMISS head, Fink Haysom.
South African Fink Haysom, a seasoned UN operator, is back in Africa as head of the world body’s mission in South Sudan.
His appointment as special representative of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UNMISS head was announced by the UN top man at the weekend.
Haysom, described by the South African Institute for Security Studies (ISS) as a seasoned diplomat, was expelled from Somalia in January 2019.
He was accused of allegedly violating diplomatic rules and overstepping his authority by government when he questioned the legal basis of the arrest of a former al-Shabaab deputy leader standing for election in South West State.
