SERAP Asks President Buhari To Withdraw Nomination Of Alleged Ruling APC Members As INEC Resident Electoral Commissioners

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has rejected the nomination of some Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by President Muhammadu Buhari.   Buhari on 26 July wrote to the Senate nominating 19 RECs. He also sought the upper chamber’s confirmation of the nominees.   Of the 19 nominees, five were reappointed for a second and final term of five years while 14 others had new appointments.

A coalition of eight civil society organisations has picked holes in the appointment of 19 Resident Electoral Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission by the President Muhammadu Buhari government. The civil societies called on the Senate to reject the nominees, who included four alleged members of the All Progressives Congress, saying the nomination violated the provisions of the 1999 Nigeria constitution as amended.
