Giving Up God: A Conversation With Sarah Henn Hayward

This Quoircast podcast is brought to you by Too Much And Not Enough by Karen Shock. Published by Quoir and available now. In this episode we chat with Sarah Henn Hayward Sarah Henn Hayward has been writing since she cracked open her first “quiet time” devotional journal. Sarah grew up in the Chicago suburbs, went to Marquette University for physical therapy, and moved to Spokane, WA, where she met her husband and grew their family. They love camping in the Pacific Northwest and take advantage of their beautiful surroundings as much as possible. After her deconstruction and departure from the faith of her youth, Sarah felt lost and adrift. Being a Christian was the foundation of her identity, giving her life purpose and meaning. She turned to books for comfort. When the progressive Christian voices fell flat and the atheistic approaches to life couldn't relate to her grief, she began writing her own spiritual memoir. there will be something other than millions of midges swarming around loch ness this weekend, when the latest technology, above the water and underneath, will be deployed by experts and volunteers in the latest effort to discover whether there is a great monster in the loch. and monster hunters from all over the world will be able to watch a livestream, to catch the moment nessie stirs — if indeed there is a sea creature. it was back in 1933 that sightings of of a "dragon or prehistoric monster" were reporte in the scottish press, and since then nessie has never really gone away. the whole thing is a ruddy tourist trap! yeah, we might as well pack it in and go home. nessie was very big in the *70s. she, or maybe he, depending on who you ask, was all over popular culture and the thought of her lurking presence made many a scenic but otherwise tranquil scottish boating holiday seem that bit more edgy. sadly, some of the magic was hijacked in when what we might call the evidence agnostic subcultures of the internet

your religious beliefs, you don't get to participate in public life. that's what happened to the burks here. massachusetts acknowledged they were a loving couple that had many strengths as foster pa parents. nevertheless because of their beliefs, they were excluded. that's unkconstitutional. >> wi know very important to yor case is the religious aspect of it. i appreciate that. what if we remove religion. what if it's an atheist or agnostic couple and the facts are otherwise the same? >> that has no relationship here, because from the beginning of the case massachusetts made clear as the license review team

what if we remove religion? what if it's an atheist or agnostic couple and the facts are otherwise the same? how would that case play out? >> yeah, that has no relationship here because from the very beginning of the case, massachusetts made clear, as the licensed review team said, it was the family's beliefs. and as the person who did the study for dcf said, their faith is not supportive and neither are they. this is a case of religious discrimination and the first amendment gives a clear answer to that question, and it's been an issue that's come up, unfortunately, across the country for religious traditions of various forms, seventh day adventist, other families, muslims, protestants, massachusetts has said you don't get to participate in public life if you have these beliefs. >> i acknowledge, i read your complaint, you attached to your complaint the entire file, so i'm read in on this. there are some troubling aspects. yes, a lot of fine qualities,

campaign manager, his chief strategist over the amount of money going to lawyers, but, you know, this comes like way too lately. and after they brought in nine figures to go to trump's various legal bills, and to be used, no doubt, to influence people in his orbit, and try to prevent them from speaking out about various indictments. >> i wonder for you, given the context, the history of what we know here, when you see that trump aligned groups continue to pay legal bills for, quote, friends and allies, what that signals to you. >> look, i think it's really troubling. i think it's something that jack smith's working on getting to the bottom of. because it's not like, you know, you sometimes have a situation which there's a corporation. it's executors or its employees wind up before grand juries and they pay the legal bills. but they do it on a pretty agnostic basis.

little bit agnostic on this because people, there is a lot going on. the attention of the news cycle can really shift, things that are really important, they sometimes get a little back seated. it's now people are paying, tension is not important. >> that's an excellent point. it does not mean that somebody's not important, voters are going to have a front and wind. it's not just jobs happening and there is a big backlash, it is the endurance of this as the issue that is so striking to me and i think so freaking out the republicans paying attention. >> it is not going anywhere is the thing. even if they had managed to somehow macgyver that 60% threshold in there as an and run, i don't even know that that would be it. what happened yesterday was 60.1% of ohioans turning out a, again, in the middle of august. everyone is seeing the out of office replies every time descended. nobody is paying attention to anything right now except for 61% of ohio voters to go up for this ballot measure and

who basically, you know, they have their christ-like figures. it's fauci, before that hillary, before that, obama. each though they pretend to be agnostic. there's certain things they won't make fun of. you see people like chapelle, louis c.k. and a lot of these -- and, oh, my god, schneider, rob schneider. they're the ones that are basically saying, you know what? we're, we have to remind people that you can make fun of everything. especially the people in charge. doesn't always have to be trump. >> fauci said, dana, it's as simple as black and white. you're vaccinated, you're safe. you're unvaccinated, you're at risk. and we were the ones being called the conspiracy theorists. >> yeah. i'm glad this is happening though. the left is going to say, okay, now it's time that we can make fun of them. good, let's do that. ridicule is one of the best things that you can do in a society to keep things healthy. and i actually think even dr. fauci might laugh at
