Analysis-For migrants, red tape turns Italian work permit scheme into mirage

In May 2020, Italy's then Agriculture Minister Teresa Bellanova wept with emotion on television as she announced a decree giving thousands of irregular immigrants the chance to work legally on farms and as domestic helpers. Frank Agbontaen, a 30-year-old Nigerian, has been in Italy since 2016. He applied for the holy grail of a work permit in July.

In May 2020, Italy's then Agriculture Minister Teresa Bellanova wept with emotion on television as she announced a decree giving thousands of irregular immigrants the chance to work legally on farms and as domestic helpers.
A year on, however, the scheme has made almost no progress, a victim of the country's tortuous bureaucracy and its struggle to integrate new arrivals.
Frank Agbontaen, a 30-year-old Nigerian, has been in Italy since 2016. Like many thousands, he arrived on a rickety boat from Libya.

ROME (Reuters) - The centrist Italia Viva party confirmed that it will abstain in a crucial confidence motion in the Senate on Tuesday, increasing the probability that Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s government will survive the vote.
Italia Viva, led by former premier Matteo Renzi, triggered an ongoing political crisis when it withdrew from the ruling coalition last week.
“Despite the many untruths in your speech, we will abstain,” the party’s former Agriculture Minister Teresa Bellanova told the Senate ahead of the confidence vote after fiercely attacking Conte and blaming him for the coalition rupture.

ROME (Reuters) - Matteo Renzi’s Italia Viva party will abstain in a crucial confidence vote in the Italian Senate on Tuesday, party sources said, denying rumours they may vote against Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s ruling coalition.
An abstention means the government would almost certainly survive the do-or-die vote.
A report on the website of Corriere Della Sera daily said the party was considering a “no” vote, despite earlier comments by its former Agriculture Minister Teresa Bellanova saying it would abstain as it did in the Chamber of Deputies on Monday.

Rome adopts plan for EU aid, straining coalition to breaking point

Rome, Jan. 13, 2021 Italy’s centre-left government is facing an acid test on Wednesday evening in Rome.
This is coming after Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s Cabinet passed plans to use billions of euros in EU coronavirus aid, a cause of ructions in the fragile ruling coalition.
But two ministers from former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s splinter party, Italia Viva, did not vote for it, according to reports from the ANSA news agency.
Renzi has announced a press conference for Wednesday afternoon.
He could announce his party’s withdrawal from the coalition, which he has threatened several times.
Non-partisan Conte had circulated his draft for the use of around 210 billion euros ($256 billion) from the EU post-pandemic reconstruction fund internally on Monday.

Ex-premier pushes Italy's government to brink of collapse - La Prensa Latina Media

Rome, Jan 13 (efe-epa).- Italy’s government was facing collapse Wednesday after former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi withdrew his centrist Italy Alive (IV) party from the ruling coalition.
“Italy Alive has not opened the crisis, the crisis opened months ago,” he said at a press conference in Rome to announce that the party’s two representatives in the Cabinet, Agriculture Minister Teresa Bellanova and Family and Equality Minister Elena Bonetti, were resigning.
“Much courage and internal freedom is needed to resign, and a sense of responsibility. It’s much harder to leave a seat, a post, than to cling to the tenacious pursuit of the status quo,” Renzi said of the now-former Cabinet ministers.
