US immigration: Crossing the Rio Grande | USA | EL PAÍS in English

The voice of the
coyote, or people smuggler, floats above the Rio Grande ahead of the rubber dinghy carrying him and a dozen Central American migrants. The raft gently bounces against the riverbank of Roma, Texas. They have arrived in the United States.
It’s just before 9pm and the sky has turned gray, blending into the color of the river and clouds. It’s hard to make out his face as he tells the huddled group to prepare to disembark. “We are now on the American side. Everybody together and please help the kids first…,” he says. Before they step onto US soil, the coyote pulls out a cellphone and makes a call: “these are the last 13 of Code Parakeet,” he says, signaling to his bosses they have made it, are alive and his responsibility to them is over.

Destination El Salvador: Embracing a New Country and Cruising Style

Destination El Salvador: Embracing a New Country and Cruising Style
Motoring over a glass calm sea towards the coast of El Salvador, the excitement of getting to a new country is palpable. To the east, the sun has just come up and is throwing golden light on conical volcanos and then spreading out across the water. Behind us some 200-plus miles and over 30 hours of sailing is Guatemala and the southern border of Mexico. We’re in Central America now, and I can feel it.
I throttle the engine back while Jill and the boys get ready to set the anchor. We’re early. Getting

4th Large "Imaginary" Caravan of Non-Invaders Hits the Road

CNN said the caravans are “imaginary” and The Resurgent says they are not invaders. Therefore, we want to inform you that the fourth large caravan of non-invaders has just left Central America for the United States.
The media has a new spin on it too. They claim they are migrating to avoid global warming.
The left — Democrats and media — are also calling it a Trump stunt. Secretary Mattis took that one on.
“We don’t do stunts in this department. Thank you,” Mattis told a reporter who posed the question after a Pentagon meeting with Mattis’ South Korean counterpart. The defense secretary added the deployment was to provide “practical support” to the Department of Homeland Security and was based on a request from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

SAN SALVADOR-At Christmas time, coffee pickers at El Salvador's mountaintop coffee plantations were busy filling baskets with the bright red berries used to produce the Central American country's famed gourmet brew.
Hugo Hernandez, coffee consultant and businessman, said the December's harvest is of particular significance, for it could prompt the first online sales of gourmet coffee to Chinese consumers, as part of an e-commerce strategy he promoted throughout the year.

SAN SALVADOR, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- At Christmas time, coffee pickers at El Salvador's mountaintop coffee plantations are busy filling baskets with the bright red berries used to produce the Central American country's famed gourmet brew.
This December's harvest is of particular significance, for it could prompt the first online sales of gourmet coffee to Chinese consumers, as part of an e-commerce strategy he promoted throughout the year, said coffee consultant and businessman Hugo Hernandez.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Hernandez worked to connect Salvadoran producers with Chinese e-commerce companies to scale up trade between the two markets.

Early forecasts warned that the 2020 hurricane season in the Atlantic would be very active, and for El Salvador, the impacts were felt early in the season.
In June, tropical storms Amanda and Cristóbal generated landslides and floods throughout the country, killing 30 people and causing significant material damage. More than 149,000 people were directly affected. As a result, the World Food Programme (WFP) estimated that more than 330,000 people were facing severe food insecurity.

My 10 Favorite Jewelry Promotions of 2020

If life gives you lemons—and it sure did this year—sometimes you have to make, well, something that smells kind of lemony. Luxury houses like LVMH, Kering, and Chanel are famed for producing objects that people don’t actually need. So it was striking that when the world suddenly needed incredible amounts of hand sanitizer—and, later, hospital gowns and masks—the big players stepped up. Factories typically devoted to producing jewelry and perfume were now producing these vitally important supplies. And, in a refreshing change, they didn’t overcharge.

Environmentalists denounce depredation of river basins in El Salvador

Environmentalists denounce depredation of river basins in El Salvador
San Salvador, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) Several environmentalistic groups on Wednesday denounced the depredation of at least three river basins in El Salvador during 2020.
The denunciation, supported by the communities, was lodged by representatives of the Roundtable on Water and Environmental Sustainability in the western Ahuachapan and Sonsonate departments.
The study confirmed that the environmental destroyers continue with their eagerness to generate wealth through the exploitation of natural resources, in particular the sugarcane companies, whose actions affect water reserves.
From January, they began to watch a progressive drying up of the rivers and springs in the region and the exhaustion of wells in the communities due to the overexploitation of the aquifers in the sugarcane areas.

Ataco joined Fountain Hills' Sister Cities family in 2007

Ataco, El Salvador, joined Fountain Hills as its third Sister City in 2007.
The small mountain town in northwest El Salvador is a town of resilience and hope. Affected frequently by hurricanes, flooding and poverty, the community is filled with residents who love their town, their country and everything they have, which may not be much, relatively speaking.
According to an article in The Times by former editor Mike Scharnow, safe and secure housing remains a major issue for families throughout the country.
“While the country’s landscape is beautiful with greenery, hillsides and inactive volcanoes, the flipside is a real and distinct vulnerability to such natural disasters as hurricanes, mudslides, earthquakes and active volcanoes,” Scharnow wrote.
