FiberCop goes live as Italy strives to close digital divide

3 Min Read
MILAN, April 1 (Reuters) - FiberCop, created to manage Telecom Italia’s (TIM) ‘last mile’ grid and open it up to other operators, became fully operational on Thursday, as the country’s biggest phone group leads efforts to close a digital divide with the rest of Europe.
In 2019, Italy ranked 24 out of 28 European Union member states in its take-up of ultrafast internet of at least 100 megabytes, the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) found.
FiberCop, into which TIM transferred its copper last mile network connecting street cabinets to people’s homes and also the fiber assets from a joint venture with Fastweb, is meant to help facilitate a switch to fast fibre connectivity.

U.S. agency criticizes Hong Kong air carrier quarantine rules

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government warned it could limit flights by Hong Kong-based carriers that got a leg up on U.S. rivals after the Asian financial hub imposed quarantine rules that forced U.S. cargo carrier FedEx Corp to move some crews to San Francisco.

The U.S. Transportation Department (USDOT) issued an order on Tuesday requiring Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific Airways Limited to file flight schedules for all U.S. flights within seven days to determine if any are “contrary to applicable law or adversely affect the public interest”.
The USDOT order was issued in reaction to rules issued by Hong Kong in January requiring locally based air crews to quarantine when returning there from international locations, but exempted flights between Hong Kong and Anchorage, Alaska’s biggest city.

PARIS (Reuters) - Aircraft leasing giant AerCap’s acquisition of rival GECAS will reduce competition in the aircraft market, the head of global airline industry body IATA warned on Wednesday.
“We understand that the situation of the leasing companies is difficult,” IATA Director General Alexandre de Juniac told Reuters. “But combining the two to have a big player (in) a very dominant situation is not good news for us.”
The world’s two largest aircraft lessors announced plans last week to combine, with Ireland’s AerCap agreeing to pay more than $30 billion for GECAS, the air finance business of General Electric.
