Australia retailer pulls AirTag over safety concerns
Officeworks responds to reports that AirTag battery is dangerously easy for children to access.
The Australian retailer Officeworks has stopped selling Apple's AirTag object tracker, following reports that its battery can easily be removed by children.
The move, first reported by Gizmodo and since confirmed by Officeworks, was done quietly at first, with shop-floor staff unaware that the product had been pulled.
One Apple fan in Keswick, South Australia, described a mystifying shopping experience on Reddit. They tried to buy an AirTag using a voucher, but employees were unable to find any, despite seeing stock on the system and remembering selling the devices a few days previously.

How to Check an AirTag's Battery Life
Friday April 30, 2021 5:05 PM PDT by Juli Clover
AirTags come equipped with a CR2032 battery that Apple says is designed to last for at least a year, so you shouldn't need to worry about the battery in your AirTag often.
If you're curious about how it's holding up or if you're worried it could get low at a time that would be inconvenient, it's easy to check the battery level of an AirTag in the Find My app.
Open the ‌Find My‌ app and tap on the Items tab.
Tap on the name of the AirTag that you want to check.

Apple's new AirTag item tracker lets you easily track things like your keys, wallet, purse, backpack, luggage, and more. AirTags have a small, circular design with a white side and a polished stainless steel side with an Apple logo.
AirTag has been designed to discourage unwanted tracking. If you are an iPhone or iPad user, the built-in Find My app will notify you if an unknown AirTag is seen moving with you over time by displaying an "AirTag Found Moving With You" message on the screen. Even if you don't use an iOS device, an AirTag that isn't with the person who registered it for an extended period of time will play a sound when moved.

Apple's new AirTags could factor into U.S. Senate antitrust hearing

“We have worked from the very beginning of iPhone to help protect the privacy of users' location data, giving them transparency and control over how all apps may access and share their location," Apple said in a statement.
"We have always embraced competition as the best way to drive great experiences for our customers, and we have worked hard to build a platform in iOS that enables third-party developers to thrive.”
Tile will testify this week before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee's antitrust panel headed by Senators Amy Klobuchar, the Democratic chair, and Mike Lee, its ranking Republican. The hearing will focus on competition concerns from developers who rely on Apple and Alphabet Inc-owned Google's app stores to reach consumers.

Back in January, we saw a few promotional images for third-party AirTags accessories from both Nomad and Spigen's Cyrill brand, and while Apple's item trackers have yet to launch, we're now seeing more signs of similar accessories starting to show up in the wild.
An increasing number of sellers on eBay, Walmart, Etsy, and other online marketplaces are now offering ‌AirTags‌ holders for sale as details on the device continue to spread.
MacRumors has also received a pair of images of one particularly interesting set of straps that our source says are made of a similar material as the fluoroelastomer Apple uses for its Apple Watch Sport Bands. The band design appears to have a snap closure to secure the AirTag and a short leash with an opening at the opposite end to allow the strap to be secured to an object to be tracked.
