Genre-Bending Series Dickinson Is Pure Imagination

"Dickinson" executes its surprisingly high-concept premise on all levels, succeeding as a drama, comedy, romance, surreal fantasy, and coming-of-age story. Its excellence can be sliced into even thinner sub-categories, too: It's great as a tender sapphic romance, as a series of rewarding in-jokes for former English majors, and as an extended meditation on the painful

'Dickinson' on Apple TV: Why Season 2 was even better than 1

“Dickinson” is many things: a period drama, an irreverent millennial comedy, an eccentric family sitcom, a wildly imaginative feminist series and one of Apple TV+'s riskier productions. In its second season, which concludes Friday, the 21st-century love letter to a 19th-century poet has proven itself a very modern feat in creative storytelling.
And storytelling it is. There isn’t a lot known about the inner life of the revered American poet, a recluse who never married and for whom fame arrived decades after her death. The meticulously researched half-hour series, from creator and showrunner Alena Smith, fills in those blanks with real and imagined details about the young writer’s life at home in Amherst, Mass., with her dysfunctional family, diverse circle of friends and taboo love interests. The young folks may wear ribbons in their hair and top hats on their heads, but they speak in present-day slang, greeting one another with a hearty “What up!”

'Dickinson' Season 2: TV Review | Hollywood Reporter

1/8/2021
Hailee Steinfeld returns as the celebrated poetess in Apple TV+'s arch multi-hyphenate series.
Dickinson is a study of genius. Not necessarily the individual genius of its protagonist, virtuosa poet Emily Dickinson, but the cultural constructs of genius and all the jubilation and despair associated with possessing that kind of talent. The magical realist antebellum dramedy speckles its story with Dickinson's writing, of course — artful chyrons here, lyrical recitations there — but
Dickinson is more interested in grappling with young Emily's process than her output.
Throughout the first and second seasons, she encounters a number of eminent artists, such as Louisa May Alcott (Zosia Mamet) and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted (Timothy Simons), who briefly mentor her, sharing trade wisdom or warning her of the dysphoria of fame. They can only do so much: Emily may not always feel in control of the words that pulse through her, but it is ultimately within her power to select her audiences. Can genius flower in the dark?

In the eerie, gleefully absurdist second season, the young poet ponders whether it’s better to be Nobody.

In 2019 the new streaming service Apple TV+ released a trailer for “Dickinson,” which framed the story of the enigmatic 19th-century American poet as a contemporary young-adult melodrama, complete with power ballad soundtrack and conspicuous employment of the honorific “Dude.” The series looked ridiculous. Naturally, I had to watch it.

It seems highly unlikely that the 19th-century American poet Emily Dickinson ever called guys "dudes."
Or that she and novelist Louisa May Alcott once went for "a run" before supper. Or that she embroidered "F*** My Life" into her needlepoint.
But in the Apple TV+ comedy
Dickinson — from creator–writer– executive producer Alena Smith — she does all that and more.
This young, spunky Emily (Hailee Steinfeld) is freshly imagined with a Victorian wardrobe and a contemporary sensibility. She gamely winches up her heavy floor-length skirt to boogie across a field with Alcott. Her satisfaction from stringing poetic words together prompts her to jump on her four-poster bed and rock out to electro-punk music. And when she's feeling awestruck, she blurts out the modern slang term "sick."
