Hats off as students celebrate their university graduation

RESPLENDENT in their robes, students enjoyed the traditional rite of passage as they donned their caps to celebrate their graduation from the University of Bolton, one of only a few universities to hold in person ceremonies. Saiqa Chaudhari reports
THE traditional pomp and splendour accompanying University of Bolton graduation ceremonies may have had to be be played down this year because of the pandemic, but it certainly did not detract from the remarkable achievements of this year’s graduands, who overcame the challenges posed over the past 12months to wear their cap with pride.
The university was forced to cancel last year’s graduation ceremonies as the country battled coronavirus.

The news comes as the University holds its ‘Alternative Graduation’, one of very few institutions across the UK to organise a series of Covid-secure ceremonies, enabling students to graduate and receive their degrees face-to-face and wearing gowns, provided free of charge.
Professor George E Holmes DL, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton, said he was delighted.
He said: “This is excellent news, particularly after the extremely challenging year-and-a-half we have all faced.

University of Bolton to resume in-person graduation ceremonies

1/1
UNIVERSITY of Bolton students will collect their degrees in person in a series of 'alternative graduations' — but not all students are happy about it.
The university will resume in-person graduation ceremonies for the first time since summer 2019, before the first national coronavirus lockdown, with covid-secure measures in place.
But no guests will be invited.
It had hoped to stage traditional ceremonies for graduating students last year and this year, but with the uncertainty around 'freedom day', the university says it has come up with 'innovative' alternative plans in which graduands can don their cap and gown.
It is one of a handful of universities to award degrees in person, with other establishments choosing to stage virtual ceremonies or postpone them.
