In 1988, Eddie Murphy created a gaggle of some of his best loved characters with the release of Coming to America. His work as Prince Akeem Joffer showed a kind of different side to him, more the romantic leading man as opposed to the smart aleck roles he brilliantly gave us in 48 Hrs., Trading Places, The Golden Child and the first two Beverly Hills Cop films. Not only that, but he chose to break some new ground for his career by playing several other characters under heavy prosthetic makeup. Now Akeem is back in a sequel uninspiringly titled Coming 2 America. As we rejoin Akeem and his wife Lisa (Shari Headley), they are celebrating their 30th anniversary. They have three daughters, but no son, a fact that is upsetting to King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones) since only a male can inherit the throne of Zamunda. He tells Akeem that their family shaman has discovered Akeem sired a son during his trip to America.Akeem decides to travel back to Queens with his best friend Semmi (Arsenio Hall), find the man, Lavelle Junson (Jermaine Fowler), bring him back to Zamunda and teach him how to be a proper prince. Lavelle convinces Akeem that his mother, Mary (Leslie Jones), needs to come with them, too. On top of dealing with a new son, Akeem is also faced with fending off threats from General Izzi (Wesley Snipes), the leader of the neighboring country of Nextdoria.Even though Coming 2 America is a sequel, it almost feels unfair to compare the two. In my eyes, they really are two different kinds of movies. Both are, of course, comedies, so that’s not what’s at question here. It’s the particular type of comedy each is that makes comparison tricky, to say the least. While there’s a lot of funny and eternally quotable material in the original, I’ve always felt most of that was reserved for the extra characters Eddie and Arsenio play, rather than a major component to the main plot. To me, Coming to America is much more of a romance than an all out hilarious comedy. I find it a little difficult to even call it a rom-com. Even though there are humorous scenes involving Akeem’s struggle to win Lisa’s heart, it doesn’t have the consistent interweaving of funny and romance that, say, a When Harry Met Sally or My Best Friend’s Wedding does.Coming 2 America, on the other hand, isn’t really much of a romantic movie, and it’s not trying to be, either. It is very firmly a comedy, relying more on the culture clash aspects of the plot and waiting until almost two-thirds in to introduce any romance. So, you’re probably saying, if it’s a comedy, is it a funny one? Surprisingly, yes! The ads made it look interesting enough for me to want to give it a chance, despite the horrible title (I find the 2-for-to substitution slightly more lazy than the too-for-2 one, yet not as lazy as simply throwing a number 2 after a title), and I genuinely laughed out loud during a lot of the runtime.I credit most of the film’s success to the winning combination of Murphy and director Craig Brewer, here collaborating again after the success of Dolemite Is My Name. They’re working from a script by the Coming to America screenwriters David Sheffield and Barry W. Blaustein, with extra work done by Kenya Barris. All of this came together well to create a sequel that not only honors the original, but also tries something new and runs with it.Certainly, when dealing with an iconic property like Coming to America, some elements are going to carry over and be copied. Yet, this is the kind of sequel where the audience expects some of that and would probably be dissatisfied if it didn’t happen. I, in fact, was a little disappointed that a couple characters from the original didn’t make a return, even as brief cameos. This movie is by no means going to make as big of an impact as its predecessor. Still, despite everything that could’ve gone wrong with it, Coming 2 America got enough right to be entertaining.
