Arts briefs: Live streaming concert with Reynolda Quartet scheduled for March 14


The Reynolda Quartet will present a livestreamed concert at 3 p.m. March 14.
The quartet, composed of violinists Ida Bieler and Janet Orenstein, violist Ulrich Eichenauer and cellist Brooks Whitehouse, all of whom serve as faculty at UNCSA, will perform “Concert of Gratitude,” the second concert in collaboration with Reynolda House.

Seeking artists
Yadkin Arts Council has issued a call for art for its 2021 juried exhibition at Welborn Gallery.
Artists from across North Carolina are eligible to participate in the 10th annual exhibit, which will be on display from July 1 to Aug. 27.

Yadkin Arts Council has issued a call for art for its 2021 juried exhibition at Welborn Gallery.
Artists from across North Carolina are eligible to participate in the 10th annual exhibit, which will be on display from July 1 to Aug. 27.
Affee Vickers, local Winston-Salem artist, will be the juror for this exhibition. Affee works in glass, acrylic, stainless steel, titanium, abstract art, oil paintings and sculptures.
The deadline to enter the show is June 6 by midnight. Eligibility for entry is open to fine art artists in both 2-D and 3-D categories who are at least 18 and live in North Carolina.
Prizes will be awarded and an opening reception will be July 1. Depending on social distancing limitations in July, the Arts Council is planning on hosting the opening reception in person. More details will follow closer to the date.

Art briefs: Outdoor Art Pop Up to feature work by local artists

ByGood Coffee and The Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County are collaborating on an outdoor Art Pop Up from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 28 at 301 Brookstown Ave in Winston-Salem.
The event will feature a mix of media including art on canvas, handmade jewelry and accessories, leather goods, woodworking crafts, textiles and fiber arts. Some of the local artists participating are April Reich, abstract artist of My Creative Designs; Ashley Dula, designer of DULA Apparel; Vaughn Harris, handmade jewelry designer of Patched Pieces by Vaughn; Melanie Jarrett, fiber artist of Three Little Birds Fiber Art; and Aliza’ Diggs-Bailey, creator of 3-D Adorned leather handbags and fashion accessories.

“How We Learn Vs. How We Think We Learn”: There are negative associations with the word “forget,” and we often envision ourselves as striving not to forget things. But according to Robert Bjork, Distinguished Research Professor in the UCLA Department of Psychology, forgetting is actually an important component of learning and memory. In his words, “Forgetting, rather than undoing learning, enables learning and focuses remembering.” Bjork maintains that humans misunderstand our system of remembering and forgetting as it relates to learning. Consequently, the decisions we make about managing our own learning are not optimal. Additionally, we grapple with societal assumptions and attitudes that actually reinforce behaviors counterproductive to learning.

San Diego International Jewish Film Festival goes virtual, but the focus is on togetherness


Going virtual for the first time, the San Diego International Jewish Film Festival isn’t missing a beat in presenting compelling dramas, suspenseful thrillers and thought-provoking documentaries. Now in its 31st year, the festival will throw in a few award winners and a bit of star power.
The documentary “Shared Legacies: The African-American Jewish Civil Rights Alliance” opens the festival, which begins Feb. 11. The film explores those shared legacies through the lens of the friendship between the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Heschel in the mid-1960s.
“ ‘Shared Legacies’ is about the common bonds between Black and Jewish communities,” said Chris Fink, chair of the festival, a program of the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. “We open with it because the film addresses contemporary issues. It’s especially important now with the heightened interest in Black Lives Matter.”
