How COVID-19 has changed campus life at the University of Delaware

There were no hand-delivered brownies for University of Delaware students living in Nana Ohemaa Asante’s hall this semester.
As a resident assistant, Asante typically takes a tray of homemade brownies door-to-door to introduce herself and start forming relationships. But like so many aspects of college life, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced that tradition to change.
“I still made brownies and I still made cookies, but I put them in little Ziploc bags and I dropped them off,” she said. “You try to comfort people in ways that you can from a distance.”
March 11 marks one year since UD president Dennis Assanis announced an early start to spring break after a pair of graduate students and a postdoctoral researcher tested positive for COVID-19. They had recently been with a UD professor who was the first person in the state to test positive for the virus.

"We are at a decisive moment in our fight against COVID-19," Dennis Assanis, university president, wrote in a message to students and staff on Friday. "We are on track to quickly exceed the number in the entire fall semester."
In his message, Assanis urged students to limit gatherings and get tested regularly to help slow the spread of the virus.
The spike in cases comes as more students have returned to campus since the original shutdown last March. This semester, UD is offering more in-person courses and the number of students living on campus has tripled from 1,300 in the fall to 3,900, all in their own single bedrooms.

RoboCop, Jimmy Carter: News from around our 50 states

From USA TODAY Network and wire reports
Alabama
Homewood: State regulators have suspended the alcohol license of a Birmingham-area bar over alleged violations of the state’s pandemic health order in what an official described as the first such case under COVID-19 rules. Regulators accused Grocery Brewpub in Homewood of violating rules about face mask requirements, occupancy limits and social distancing, Alabama ABC spokesman Dean Argo told WBMA-TV. The emergency suspension issued Tuesday was Alabama’s first license suspension linked to pandemic health rules, he said. Photos shared recently on social media showed people packed into the nightspot with few face masks visible. Bar owner Rayford Cook told the station the business was cited for violating Alabama’s mask ordinance, which requires facial coverings in public. “I look forward to our upcoming hearing regarding this matter and addressing it so we can provide a safe environment for patrons to enjoy in the future,” Cook said in a statement. A hearing is expected in April, but the business cannot serve alcohol until then. An order that has been in place since July requires face masks in public when within 6 feet of someone from another household.
