KILLEEN, Texas — It has been one year since the first reported case of the coronavirus surfaced in Bell County as the pandemic began to spread around the world.
"COVID, I've called it a ghost because we don't know where it is or where it's lurking and it can just sneak up on you," said Angenet Wilkerson as she sat in the living room of her mother's house in Killeen.
Wilkerson said that both her and her husband Ernest became concerned when the virus arrived in Central Texas because of the racial disparity that came with it.

KILLEEN, TX — Fallon Rufus was working at local bar and managing her own bartending business when the pandemic hit, changing everything.
“I’ve seen a tremendous decline in sales. It’s not because of marketing or anything like that, it’s simply because the economy has been shaken,” she said.
Out of a job for six months, Rufus was unable to get rental assistance or unemployment.
“I’m down with one arm. I’m trying my hardest. I’m not trying to give up but I need your help. To see that door is still shut in my face, it makes you want to give up,” said the Killeen woman.

'A tough few days': City, community leaders respond to recent Killeen violence | Crime

In an emotional news conference on Monday, Killeen Councilmember Debbie Nash-King called for the end of gun violence in the city.
“My top priority today is to make Killeen a safer place for our residents, especially our senior citizens and our youth, and in order to accomplish this task we must continue to promote crime prevention,” Nash-King said at the steps of Killeen City Hall, following an opening prayer by Pastor Jimmy Towers of Lifeway Fellowship.
Nash-King called the 5 p.m. press conference, which was also attended by several city officials and by community leaders, in response to Saturday’s shooting death of Cadarian Connell Parker, 19, on Houston Street on Killeen’s north side, as well as the injuring of a 5-year-old child who was wounded in that same shooting.
