GST fraud: Taxmen arrest two in Bengaluru for fake ITC claims using 30 shell companies

Two individuals have been arrested in Karnataka for allegedly cheating the government out of crores of rupees through a fake GST bill racket. The accused allegedly operated a syndicate that helped companies in the manpower and labour supply industry claim input tax credit based on fictitious transactions. The authorities suspect a revenue loss of around Rs 90 crore and are currently investigating transactions worth Rs 525 crore.

IAS officer Charulatha Somal took charge as the new Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu district on Saturday.
Kodagu Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Bhanwar Singh Meena, who was officiating as in-charge Deputy Commissioner of the district, handed over charge to the new Deputy Commissioner.
An official statement said Ms. Somal had earlier served as the Chief Executive Officer of Kodagu Zilla Panchayat.
Ms. Somal replaces Annies Kanmani Joy, who recently left for the U.S. on long leave to join her husband, an Indian Foreign Service officer posted in Washington DC, along with her daughter.

Madikeri: Kodagu Deputy Commissioner (DC) Annies Kanmani Joy has ordered the Forest Department to close ‘Ingu Gundi’ (soak pits) and contour trenches atop Brahmagiri Hill ranges at
Talacauvery.
In the wake of Geological Survey of India (GSI) submitting its primary report on the devastating landslip on the night of Aug. 5 this year where Gajagiri Hill (Brahmagiri Hill Range) collapsed, the DC has asked the Forest Department to take remedial measures within the next monsoon.
Two houses at the foot of Gajagiri Hill with its five residents, including the chief priest of the Talacauvery Temple were swept away and vast swathes of coffee plantations were buried under the debris on Aug. 5. The GSI report has found that a series of ‘Ingu Gundi’ dug up by the Forest Department was the main cause for the Hill to collapse. ‘Ingu Gundis’ are small pits to collect rainwater for recharging groundwater. The DC issued this direction at a meeting held at Talacauvery Forest Guest House on Friday that was attended by Forest Department officials, GSI officers Aizaz from Jammu and Kashmir, Kamal Kumar from Uttar Pradesh and Senthil Kumar from Tamil Nadu. The officers told the DC that ‘Ingu Gundi’ and trenches must not be dug up atop any mountain range in Kodagu that is near to human habitation.

Even as the elections to gram panchayats are fast approaching, the Kodagu district administration had consultation with the administration of Kasaragod in Kerala on the steps to be taken on the inter-State border for ensuring free and fair elections.
The Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu, Annies Kanmani Joy, and her Kasaragod counterpart D. Sabith Babu, and Dakshina Kannada counterpart K.V. Rajendra took part in the consultations through a videoconference on Wednesday.
