William Cherkasky didn’t think Earth Day would catch on in 1968 as he and other progressives discussed political strategies on a fishing boat off the coast of Miami. The former Appleton resident and World War II veteran was chief of staff for U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin at the time, and they were trying to figure out a way to highlight environmental issues in a way similar to the Vietnam War teach-ins that were taking place at universities across the country. “We all went down to Miami to take a rest, go fishing, drink a bottle of beer every now and then and eat takeout chicken in our hotel rooms,” Cherkasky said. “We started talking about the environment, and we all realized that could become a good issue.” ....

Lois Reed Lois Mae (Uhlenbrauck) Reed, 89, passed away December 20th, 2020 in Sartell, Minnesota. She was born to William and Viola Uhlenbrauck in Appleton, Wisconsin, on September 1st, 1931. Lois graduated from Appleton High School. She had fond memories growing up on her family farm and spending the weekdays during her high school years along with her sister Marion at the home of her beloved grandparents, Ed and Allie Holz. After graduation Lois worked and lived in Fort Worth, Texas. It is there that she met and fell in love with Howard Reed. They married December 14, 1956. Their marriage followed the call to the ministry where Lois’s encouraging and giving spirit partnered to the role of a pastor’s wife. Always welcome at her table, her hospitality and positive outlook blessed the lives of so many. She gave out her chocolate chip cookies like the way she loved others- in abundance. Lois cherished her family which was reflected by the way she fervently prayed for ....
