Turkish FA says Super Lig to return on December 19 after referee punched

The Turkish FA (TFF) has stated its intention for the Turkish Super Lig will resume on Tuesday 19 December from a week-long suspension after a referee was hospitalised having been punched to the ground by a club president at the end of a match.Faruk Koca, president of Super Lig side MKE Ankaragucu, raced onto the field and hit referee Halil Umut Meler after a draw against Caykur Rizespor on Monday.Meler was hospitalised after being knocked to the floor by Koca, whose team had conceded a 97th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw.Meler has subsequently left hospital with a swollen eye and Koca was one of three individuals involved in the incident arrested on Tuesday, with matches across Turkey temporarily put on hold amid the fallout from the incident.Turkish FA (TFF) chairman Mehmet Buyukeksi told reporters on Wednesday: "We will never allow attacks or disproportionate pressure on our referees. This incident needs to become a milestone, a turning point for Turkish football."Buyukeksi confirmed that the league would resume on December 19 and said the TFF's disciplinary committee would decide on Thursday on the status of Ankaragucu, adding that a "zero tolerance" approach would be shown towards attacks on referees.While the TFF is pushing ahead for a swift return to action to continue with the fixture list, they may have to consider bringing in referees from abroad to officiate.On Tuesday, representatives of the referees’ union, Arda Kardesler and Mete Kalkavan, announced that Turkish officials “will not play the matches unless radical and quick decisions are made”. Earlier that day, the Association of Active Football Referees and Observers of Turkey called on all referees not to take the field, adding: “The violent attack was not only against our referee Halil Umut Meler but also against the entire referee community.”The referees' union has yet to give an update on their position for a return to the pitch.
