The 12 rivers monitored under the central government’s National Water Monitoring Programme (NWMP) include Arkavathi, Lakshmantirtha, Tungabhadra, Bhadra, Cauvery, Kabini, Kagina, Krishna, Shimsha, Bhima, Netravati and Tunga.
The water quality report for September 2023 reveals a multifold increase in total coliform bacteria over the last five years. While the total coliform value reported in September 2018 was 9,200 MPN/100 ml, it has risen to 1,60,000 MPN/100 ml. The amount of faecal coliform bacteria has also tripled (from 2800 MPN/100 ml to 7,000 MPN/100 ml), and the BOD value has increased from 4 mg/L to 6 mg/L.
