Review: 'Call My Agent!', Season Four – Palatinate

Call My Agent! (
Dix Per Cent) landed on Netflix. The show, which follows the workings of a talent agency in central Paris, is like an up-market
Extras in that each episode features a cameo from a celebrity guest or two. Thankfully, unlike
Extras, the show is altogether more optimistic, with much less Ricky Gervais and much more of the alluring grandeur of French cinema.
Anchoring the plot are the four shareholders in the agency: Andréa (Camille Cottin), Mathias (Thibault de Montalembert), Gabriel (Grégory Montel) and Arlette (Liliane Rovère). The conflict, loyalty and disloyalty between the four of them gives much needed continuity to the series, which, by being cameo-oriented, could easily feel disjointed. Their assistants, Camille, Noémie, and, especially Hervé, the fluttering giddy assistant played by Nicolas Maury, add pizzazz and absurdity.

How French import Call My Agent made me forget about COVID monotony and became my happy place

Call My Agent.(Netflix)
Warm Blanket is a series of personal essays from Canadian writers and artists reflecting on the pop culture that has brought them comfort and coziness during one year of the pandemic.
No matter how many critical accolades or recommendations from my peers a TV series gets, I've often struggled with taking the leap into a new one.
Who are these people on my screen and
why would I want to hang out with them for so many hour-long blocks? During the colder months of my lockdown blues, this reluctance to invest into unfamiliar universes and character dynamics has mostly kept me to just binging hours of unchallenging content. With little to no energy, attention span or hunger to broaden my horizons, my ideal comfort viewing experience has mostly amounted to watching drag queen Jaymes Mansfield transform cheap wigs into better wigs or custom doll-making videos on repaint extraordinaire HeXtian's channel.

Given his output from the mid-90s onwards, French filmmaker Cedric Klapisch was the ideal person to introduce
Call My Agent! (2015-2020) to the world. “It wasn’t intentional, but everything that I’ve come up with, every story that’s interested me, deals with what binds people,” he told me more than a decade ago. “How boundaries exist in a family, or a group of friends, or a couple, or a company. If I deal with only personal problems, for me that wouldn’t be enough.”

Call My Agent! – a laugh-out-loud tour through top-notch French cinema

Although TV shows like Entourage and Extras have looked behind the scenes of show business, the way Call My Agent! flips the camera mirror is unique. The main characters play casting agents at a fictional Parisian film agency, while real A-list French movie stars play themselves as clients.
The concept is meta, yet the effect isn’t navel-gazing but self-aware, as each household name sends up their public image. Isabelle Huppert satirises her workaholic habits as her agents ferry her between two film shoots in a single night, while in another episode, Monica Belluci, the actor frequently
named among the world’s most beautiful women, renounces dating “egomaniac stars” and enlists her agent’s help in finding “a regular guy … a math teacher, a cabinetmaker”.

That feeling when you have eaten all the candy in the house and you look on the doorstep to find that someone has sent you a 1-pound box of assorted nuts and chews is pretty much how I felt learning that a fourth season of "Call My Agent" had landed on Netflix.
The series, called "Dix Pour Cent" ("Ten Percent") in its native France, first came to my attention a couple of summers ago, by word of mouth, when the first two seasons were available. It was quickly clear that this was a series that had my name on it, handwritten and bordered in gold, presented on a dish made of silver. Set in a Paris-based talent agency, it is salted, after the manner of "The Larry Sanders Show," with real French screen stars, including Isabelle Adjani, Juliette Binoche, Fabrice Luchini, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jean Reno (and in the latest season, American Sigourney Weaver) playing ironic versions of themselves, and shot in real Paris locations. And though it is obviously not completely original — it's a workplace comedy in more than one television tradition — it's also different in the way that one language is different from another even when a sentence says the same thing.
