On Sunday February 19th, the 36th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union elected Dr Jean Kaseya, a public health physician from the Democratic Republic of Congo, as the new Director General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). Dr Kaseya will arrive to an institution that rose to prominence during the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Monday that by supporting peace building efforts and by deepening the country’s bilateral relationships with fellow African nations in trade and investment, South Africa is playing its part towards meeting the aspirations of the African Union’s (AU’s) Agenda 2063. He said at the same time, South Africa is helping to create conditions that will enable its own stability, growth and development.
