New Zealand Government "complacent" Over Deepening COVID-19 Danger

Friday, 2 July 2021, 11:21 am
By John Braddock, Socialist Equality Group
Several
New Zealand health experts have warned that Jacinda
Ardern’s Labour Party-Greens coalition government has
become “complacent“ over COVID-19 and didn’t act fast
enough to suspend travel with the Australian state of New
South Wales after a positive case from Sydney surfaced in
Wellington last week.
The New Zealand capital went
from alert level 1 to 2, which mandates some social
distancing measures, on June 23 after an Australian visitor
who spent the previous weekend in the city tested positive
on his return to Sydney. That city had been under limited
restrictions following an outbreak that began on June

Stricter long-term Covid-19 restrictions could be difficult to enforce long-term - 14-May-2021

Getting the public on board with tougher long-term Covid-19 suggestions could be a challenge
14 May 2021
Ashley Bloomfield has suggested moving the country to a baseline of Level 2.5 restrictions, to allow borders to reopen to more low-risk countries.
Those restrictions could be in place for three to five years, while the virus remains a pandemic or epidemic.
Auckland University Professor of Medicine Des Gorman says long-term measures will be needed, but they need to be sustainable and enforceable.
He says the public will comply with masks on planes, trains and buses, tracking apps and vaccine passports -- but won't comply with much stricter rules.
