Three exhibitions to see in New York this weekend

Guadalupe Maravilla: Planeta Abuelx
Until 6 September at Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens
The latest presentation at Socrates Sculpture Park is by the Brooklyn-based Salvadoran artist Guadalupe Maravilla, addressing themes of migration, illness and holistic medicine, a subject the artist also explored in his recent show at PPOW in Tribeca. There are a series of installations across the five-acre park evoking ancestral knowledge, Mesoamerican symbolism, and botanical and sonic elements modelled after Indigenous cleansing and healing instruments. The large-scale sculpture
Disease Throwers (#13, #14) (2021) extend the artist’s series of vessels resembling shrines that are activated during in-person "sound bath" ceremonies. Through the duration of the show, the artist will hold several such free communal sound baths at the park, which he believes “helps balance emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical pain”, and were a crucial element of his own recovery from cancer.

Under The Influence: Carwyn Ellis

Carwyn Ellis released
Joia!, an album unlike any other in that it was heavily influenced by Brazilian music and recorded in Rio, but with lyrics in Welsh; a true transatlantic collaboration. For Ellis, who is known in indie pop circles as the front-man for Colorama, and also plays guitar with The Pretenders, the album was the culmination of a burgeoning admiration for Brazilian music. With his Carwyn Ellis & Rio 18 band, he followed that album up with another ,
Mas, released earlier this year, that was once more recorded in Rio (at Audio Rebel), but also hinted at some other Latin American influences outside of Brazil. This Under The Influence is a chance to get to know more about the records and sounds that led to, and influenced, these two records of Ellis, and also find out how Latin American music cast a spell upon him.

Audio Rebel: How an Alternative Studio in Rio de Janeiro is Surviving the Pandemic

Audio Rebel: How an Alternative Studio in Rio de Janeiro is Surviving the Pandemic By Julia Garayo Willemyns | 01 April, 2021
I arrive at Audio Rebel, in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, and am struck by how incongruous the space is from the outside. It seems like a relatively residential area – colonial-style houses covered in graffiti are sandwiched in between high-rise buildings. I text Pedro Azevedo, the owner, and sure enough, he comes out of what looks like a normal house to wave me in.
Exterior of Audio Rebel
Audio Rebel is an independent studio that prides itself in being a gathering place for alternative music. It’s an integral space for alternative music in Rio de Janeiro. In Pedro’s words, “Audio Rebel is an incubator and laboratory where all the major players in the new music scene in Rio have collaborated, a house for exploratory and good music.”
