“We understand that people are still adhering to social distancing guidelines, they are usually here to grab things and go,” said Kimberly McCune, Halls Library branch assistant. “Without programming we wanted to reach out to them, to pique their interest, to continue their lifelong education.”
McCune said that they took stock of the books and supplies they already had and came up with the idea of loaning out Tween Totes.

DA: Man charged for selling gun to teen killed at Knoxville high school

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The Knox County District Attorney’s Office has announced charges against a 21-year-old man who they say sold a gun to Anthony Thompson Jr., who was shot and killed by police at an area high school in April.
The DA said Kelvon Foster is charged with providing handguns to juveniles. He’s also facing federal charges of making false or fictitious statements in connection with the purchase of a firearm.
According to the DA’s office, Foster met the 17-year-old at Harvey’s Pistol & Pawn on April 5 and bought a 9mm handgun. He’s accused of meeting Thompson Jr. later that day and then selling him the gun for cash and marijuana.

Families of slain Knoxville teens seek answers, solutions for shootings

View Comments
Lawrence Muhammad didn't hear the gunfire outside his family's East Knoxville home that February evening. He didn't know what had happened until he found his son in a state of panic and asked, in a heart-stopping moment: "Where's your sister?"
Muhammad went outside and found 15-year-old Janaria there, shot and bleeding badly at the bottom of the steps behind their house. He tried to keep her alive, but he couldn't save his daughter.
Janaria was pronounced dead at the hospital Feb. 16, the third of five teenagers to lose their lives to gun violence in Knoxville this year.
Nearly three months later, Janaria Muhammad's killing remains unsolved. So, too, does the March 9 shooting of 15-year-old Jamarion Gillette, who was found late that night by a passerby on the road leading to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. He died overnight from a still-unexplained gunshot wound.

The Bobcat Company brings back music to Central High while helping A-E

When Bethany Lay started as the new Central High School choral director in mid-February, her students were not singing.
“I know that there is a rich history of musical theatre at Central,” said Lay. “They were working on music theory and not actively singing.”
Lay recalled working on musical theatre scenes in college — a stripped down musical with some set pieces and props.
“It is a more time-friendly way to pick and choose what could work with these restrictions,” she explained. “A scenes program meets the moment of where we are, and it is a great way to feature a lot of kids with a different lead in every scene.”

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — For the third weekend straight, community members led children in a rally for change in Danny Mayfield Park. They want to see a safer Knoxville for their children and for future generations.
Felecia Outsey believes they can help accomplish that by teaching love.
"In order for us to actually stop the cycle of violence, we must do our part in organizing, getting together and using the resources that we have," Outsey said. "We are empowered to come out here and to teach love to children."
