Aigasa Masayoshi`s Striking Works Capture The Numbing Sense Of Alienation Brought On By Modernization And Urbanization

A visit to The Tsukuba Museum Of Art is almost always a stimulating and worthwhile  experience. Whether for a show of one of the surprisingly impressive  local art circles (which could be of painting, sculpture, calligraphy, photography, crafts etc.), student exhibitions (either university or high school) or to see the works of  famous or not-so-famous professionals, a walk through the museum`s comfortable and conveniently do-able confines can sometimes provide aesthetic pleasure , and even more often, help us to gain deeper insights into Japanese culture. With the amateur groups, no matter what the level of skill (though it is sometimes amazingly high!), I have often found the SUBJECT MATTER that is dealt with (or NOT dealt with) to be of great interest (imagine one hundred photos of Lake Kasumigaura and its environs WITHOUT ONE SHOT  of birds caught in nets! ). As can be expected, when the works of certain professional artists, especially those with the ability to tune into the  TIMES and capture the mood of a generation, are on display, our viewing experience becomes all the more enriching.

My Translation of Basho’s Most Famous Poem (the one about the frog and the pond)

This haiku poem by Matsuo Basho :  FURUIKE YA KAWAZU TOBIKOMU MIZU NO OTO (古池や蛙飛こむ水のおと) is not only his best known work (on an international level) but it is probably the most famous of ALL haikus. The familiar literal translation goes like this:
An old pond, a frog jumps in, the sound of water.
But this very simple sounding poem can be translated and interpreted in countless ways ( the sign of a great work !). I have found a site online which presents 30 different English versions of this same haiku, all by great or near-great writers and poets. Amazingly, none of them gets it quite right (in my humble opinion)! Here is the site:

FUKANBO ( The Bottomless Paddy Field)- a Bone-Chilling Folktale From One of Tsukuba`s Old Villages

( a retelling of a tale heard from an elderly woman in Toyosato, the north-western part of what is now Tsukuba City)

These days, with all the modern machinery and know-how, young people growing up in rice-farming families have it easy. They have no idea how much time we had to spend or what back breaking labor we had to endure to finally reap in our crop of rice. Yes, it`s hard for  my grandkids to try and understand what life was like when I, their old granny, was a young girl. They certainly could not imagine what things were like back in the days when MY OWN granny was young.

For those of us living in Japan who savor the changes that take place month by month, week by week and day by day in our natural surroundings, May just might verily be the merriest month of the year ! The rice-fields, which for the preceding six months have been dull, brown, empty spaces are within a span of a few days flooded creating a magnificent water-world, with tips of young rice plants just breaking the mirror-like surfaces in uncannily perfect rows. Ducks, egrets and herons descend joyously upon these waters. The bush-warblers practice their distinctive song, out of tune at first, but after a few days at it you hear them singing away pitch perfect – while at night the mighty frog choruses roar. The young leaves of spring fill the air with a delicious musk – and so many shades of green, while the seasons flowers give us just as many shades of violet… wisteria, iris, azalea…..

There are many, who based on their readings of certain books, or visits to Japan which include taking in: the Noh theater , a tea ceremony, or a meal at an exclusive KAISEKI (traditional haute-cuisine) restaurant, are under the impression that Japanese traditional culture is all refinement, elegance, and understatement. The unspoken word, the pregnant silence, the subtle gesture, the elusive symbolism…………
