Michèle Audette, commissioner of MMIWG inquiry, among five named to Senate


OTTAWA — Michèle Audette, one of the commissioners for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, is among the five newest members of the Senate.
Audette was named as a senator for Quebec as part of a raft of appointments made public by the Prime Minister’s Office.
Audette was one of the five commissioners responsible for the inquiry, which delivered a final report to the federal government in June 2019 that included 231 calls for justice.
Prior to that, she had been president of the Native Women’s Association of Canada, and in 2015 unsuccessfully ran for the federal Liberals in the Quebec riding of Terrebonne.

On Thursday, Karen Sorensen resigned as mayor of Banff to represent Alberta in Ottawa after being chosen by Gov. Gen. Mary Simon. Sorensen was first elected to local politics in 2004, serving six years as a councillor, before she was elected Banff mayor in 2010, where she served for 11 years.

“I am humbled and incredibly honoured to be appointed to the Canadian Senate. After 17 years being privileged to serve the people of Banff, I am exhilarated to have this amazing opportunity in service to Canada,” Sorensen said.

The appointment to the Senate of Canada for Arnot, also a former federal treaty commissioner for the province, was announced Thursday by the Prime Minister’s Office.

“This is a great honour and I am truly humbled,” Arnot said in a statement.
“The Prime Minister was clear when he spoke to me that he expects me to make a significant contribution to the work of the Senate, and to help tackle the broad range of challenges and opportunities facing our country.”
Arnot has been in the role of chief commissioner since 2009, after starting his legal career in Saskatchewan in 1976.

Banff Mayor Karen Sorensen 1 of 5 new appointments to Canadian Senate

Sorensen is currently in her third term as mayor and before that she spent six years as a town councillor and four years as a school board trustee.
She also spent 17 years working in the hotel industry in Ontario, B.C. and Alberta.
Sorensen was named Alberta Centennial Ambassador in 2005 and was a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and YWCA Banff 2019 Woman of Distinction Award.
The new Senators were recommended by the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, and chosen using "the merit-based process open to all Canadians," read a release.

The Federal government also stated it plans to open Canada’s borders to fully vaccinated travelers from all other countries on Sept. 7. “provided that the domestic epidemiologic situation remains favorable.”
Officials also said that children under 12, without vaccines, will be exempt from the quarantine requirement after entering Canada and will be allowed to travel with their parents following public health orders.
