Regulars at the Berlin Film Festival (Berlinale) in recent years are used to a number of sights and sensations: the sinister cold shrouding the ultra-touristic Potsdamer Platz where the fest is held; an eclectic ensemble of journalists and critics pressed against one another waiting for shots of coffee; food trucks hawking expensive snacks for guileless guests and the incessant search for comfortable seating in bustling cinemas. That’s all in addition to the affable atmosphere of Berlin itself - the new European capital of art.

Berlin (AFP)
Coronavirus pushed this week's Berlin film festival entirely online, as the industry grapples with new realities and directors harness the drama of the the pandemic.
After Cannes was cancelled last year and this winter's Sundance went all virtual, the Berlinale has staged an event unlike any other in its 71-year history.
Organisers pushed the event back by a month as the second wave of the virus rages in Germany, cut its length in half to five days and chopped it into two parts.
They hope to welcome stars to the red carpet and audiences back into movie theatres -- or at least open-air cinemas -- at a June edition which will feature the current edition's biggest hits.

Review: District Terminal

film profile], an Iranian-German entry in the Berlinale’s Encounters competition, this reviewer immediately wondered whether the reception would be any different in a coronavirus-free era. The story, set in the not-so-distant future, revolves around unsuccessful poet Peyman (
Bardia Yadegari). He shares a small flat with his elderly mother, walks or runs around an empty neighbourhood, hears mostly bad news from the outside world, meets the same group of people all the time and is wallowing in frustration – sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Yet it’s difficult to connect with the doomed protagonist – it’s as if the sheer number of calamities have cancelled each other out.

District Terminal by Bardia Yadegari and Ehsan Mirhosseini
Tehran in the near future. Pollution and a lethal virus have reduced the city to a dump and forced the population to emigrate or live in quarantine. Peyman is a poet and a junkie who lives with his mother in a neighbourhood that has been placed under round-the-clock surveillance by quarantine officers. Struggling to survive, Peyman divides his days between spending time with his no-less-bewildered teenage daughter, a woman living in the USA whom he has married in order to emigrate, conversations with his two closest friends Ramin and Mozhgan, and an illicit affair with a girl with whom he is hopelessly in love. Rumours of an imminent war are growing and one by one Peyman’s friends are departing, leaving him alone and tormented by ghosts. In which world does Peyman live, the real or the fictional? In which of the two will he find redemption?
