Wokingham Labour challenge council over Barkham solar farm

A Labour councillor up for election this year has serious questions over the effectiveness of a proposed new solar farm in BARKHAM.
A plan to convert Barkham Farms into a solar farm with approximately 72,000 panels was submitted by Wokingham Borough Council on its planning portal on Thursday, April 8.
The council has argued the solar farm would provide the borough with much needed green energy.
However, the effectiveness of the proposed solar farm in cutting carbon emissions has been questioned, along with concerns about the impact the solar farm could have on wildlife.
The viability of the solar farm and the part it would play in the council’s strategy to respond to the ‘Climate Emergency’ has been seized upon by Andy Croy, the Labour Councillor for the Bulmershe & Whitegates ward.

Wokingham Conservatives defend huge Barkham solar farm plan

Cllr Murray said: “The global Carbon Footprint is 51 billion tonnes per year.
“What Cllr Croy is essentially saying is that there is no point in Wokingham doing anything on climate change as we represent 1/1000th of 1 per cent of the global carbon footprint. Unfortunately, there is no silver bullet in Climate Change.
“I wish there was something that we could do that would cut our carbon footprint in half, but there isn’t. The simple fact that Wokingham Labour fail to realise is that we have to lots of little things that add up and add up and add up to big reductions overall.

Wokingham Liberal Democrats have joined the Labour Party in criticising the council’s plans for a massive solar farm in BARKHAM.

Wokingham Borough Council unveils plans for massive new solar farm in Barkham
A farm in BARKHAM could be in for a massive change if plans go ahead to convert it into a solar farm.
Wokingham Borough Council has submitted plans to transform Barkham Farms into a solar energy farm which it hopes will serve over 7,000 homes and businesses.
The farmland, off Barkham Ride, located between Barkham, Finchampstead and Arborfield Garrison is currently being used by a tenant farmer for crops and cattle farming.
The land stretches over 52 hectares.
But the council would like to convert the land into the solar farm with approximately 72,000 solar panels in an effort to generate renewable energy.
