Basicneeds-Ghana trains traditional and faith-based healers in mental health case management By Adam Abdul-Fatawu Wunizoya || Tamale LISTEN 6 HOURS AGO BASIC NEEDS GHANA, a non-governmental organization working towards addressing mental health issues in Ghana in collaboration with MEHSOG have trained over thirty (30) traditional and Faith-Based mental health healers to help in the fighting against mental health issues in the country. The healers, both male and female were drawn from the Tamale metro and that of Zabzugu district assemblies and were trained on how to manage mental health cases without dehumanizing victims. The training forms part of the project strengthening access to timely and quality rehabilitation to survivors to Torture and Organized Violence (TOV) in Ghana funded by DIGNITY, Danish Institute Against Torture. ....

The media and civil society have been urged to become a force for change in combating stigma and discrimination against persons with disabilities (PWDs) and their inclusion in the scheme of affairs. That would go a long way to transform the lives of PWDs, Madam Susan Mensah of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), formerly United Kingdom Department for International Development (UKAid), said in Accra. Stigma refers to the act of labelling someone as inferior because of an attribute he or she has; whilst discrimination is the act of making unjustified distinctions between human beings based on their groups, classes, or other categories to which they are perceived to belong. ....
Persons with mental illness exposed to harmful treatments at healing centres - Study A field study on mental health treatment at traditional and faith-based healing centres in Ghana shows that about 30 per cent of persons with mental illness who patronise these services are exposed to potentially harmful treatments. It revealed that traditional healers denied their patients food and water, flogged them, deprived them of sleep, and restrained them with chains and ropes as a part of the healing process. The study was conducted by Basic Needs Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organisation, Mental Health Society of Ghana, and the Danish Institute against Torture with funding from the Danish Government. ....
