Watch a view of a blast site in southern Beirut on Tuesday 2 January after Hamas confirmed its deputy leader, Saleh al Arouri, had been killed by an explosion.
Saleh Arouri was one of the founders of Hamas' military wing, and headed the group's West Bank operations.
An explosion in Beirut on Tuesday killed Saleh Arouri, a top official with the Palestinian militant group Hamas and three others, officials with Hamas said.
Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group in Lebanon, earlier vowed to retaliate against any Israeli targeting of Palestinian officials in the country.
Saleh Arouri, who was the most senior Hamas figure killed since the war with Israel began, was also a founder of the group's military wing.
