Faculty Q&A – Emily Bowles

Why work in higher education? (Anonymous)
When I was in graduate school, I was taking a seminar on politics and the female author, and at one point during the semester, we talked about how all of us struggled to reconcile our advocacy or activism with our intellectual work. At Lawrence, I’ve had so many opportunities to see what happens when theory and practice collide, and I love knowing that I can play a role in helping students see the myriad ways in which their complex stories are what sustain our community by creating an ecosystem of interdependent voices and visions, all ultimately linked by the shared value we place on lifelong learning and deep intellectual curiosity.

"The Need" to be more than a thriller novel – The Collegian

“The Need” to be more than a thriller novel
It’s not often that I purchase a book solely because of the cover. I recently made an exception to this rule when I saw Helen Phillip’s “The Need.” Visually pleasing and alluring, the cover depicts a silhouette of a woman filled in by foliage. “The Need” tells the story of a mother, Molly, home alone with her two young children when she hears the noise of an intruder inside her home. As the story progresses, it seems as if the intruder knows too much about her family. Molly attempts to protect her two children from this unknown threat while simultaneously coming to terms with her own weaknesses. “The Need” falls within the genres of thriller and horror.

"I miss boring meetings," John Kenney said. The author of two workplace novels - "Truth in Advertising" and "Talk to Me" - and "Love Poems for the Office," Kenney doesn't miss being bored. "I miss being in a room with other people."
Zoom meetings are functional, Kenney said, but lack spontaneity and stymie meandering conversations. "What makes work interesting is the serendipitous spark that could come when you're chatting and the other person said something and then you get an idea," he said. "Serendipity is hard to capture on Zoom."
