Over 20,000 suckler farmers have applied to the SCEP as the scheme closed for applications last night (Monday, May 22).
The star-rating system for suckler-bred cattle is a cattle-breeding tool which many suckler farmers have great confidence in and look to as a guide when selecting replacement heifers for their suckler herds.
The new suckler scheme is called the Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme or SCEP for short and is open to applications from farmers.
The IFA has called on Minister Charlie McConalogue to deliver a payment of €90/cow under a new scheme for suckler farmers.
Details on a second scheme that will be made available to suckler farmers is expected to be announced in the coming six weeks.
