Who's Going to Win Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress at the 2021 Oscars? Rotten Tomatoes – Movie and TV News

The Role: Ma Rainey, the Mother of the Blues and leader of her band. The groundbreaking musician and LGBTQ icon was once dubbed the ugliest woman in show business, and with the aid of false teeth, horsehair wigs, elaborate gowns, and a fat suit, Oscar winner Viola Davis gave life to the woman whose voice would have hundreds queuing up for hours just hear her croon or catch a glimpse of her on stage. Davis embodied not just Rainey’s presence on stage but also her steadfast determination not to allow anyone to diminish or dismiss her worth.
The Odds: Currently, there isn’t a clear frontrunner for Best Actress. Andra Day won the Golden Globe, Carey Mulligan took home the Critics Choice, and Frances McDormand won the BAFTA, but we are giving Viola Davis’ win at the SAG Awards the most weight and believe she will be our likely winner. This is fitting as her pedigree and previous Oscar nomination warrant it, and her only win was for a Supporting Role; she is more than overdue to win for a lead turn.

2021 Oscars: Four first-time nominees reflect on success

Earning an Academy Award nomination is always a big deal. Yet on the morning they were announced in March this year, Amanda Seyfried — who earned her first ever nod for “Mank” — was far from glued to the TV set.
“I was absolutely sleeping,” says Seyfried, who adds that she’d agreed to let her mom wake her with any good news when this year’s nominations were announced. And she’s not alone — first-timer Andra Day (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”) was also zonked out when the nominations were read. Meanwhile, fellow first-timers Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”) and Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”) were busily filming their next projects and had to learn the news from coworkers.

'Pieces of a Woman' Has Midwives Talking About That Birth Scene

‘Pieces of a Woman’ Has Midwives Talking About That Birth Scene
Vanessa Kirby’s Oscar-nominated performance involves an extended sequence that these experts say gets some things right — and a few wrong.

In the movies, birth is usually an emergency. It begins with the woman’s water breaking, at the worst possible moment. She appears to be barely in labor, and yet she is rushed, through gridlock traffic, to the hospital. There she becomes angry, and the pain is her husband’s fault. She yells at him, perhaps even injures him, and orders him to get a vasectomy. Then she begs for an epidural, but for some reason, she can’t have it. After four minutes of intense screaming, she’s handed something that looks like the Gerber baby.

for you?

Stories Hinged on Raising Kids Gain Greater Heft in the Age of Coronavirus

Stories Hinged on Raising Kids Gain Greater Heft in the Age of Coronavirus

Long ago, about a year ago to be exact, when COVID-19 first reared its ugly head and the United States was not yet the fiery petri dish of percolating viral plague it would soon come to be, friends and I gathered in our Los Angeles area homes, expecting lockdown to last three, four weeks, at most. It’s insane to think so now, but there was a faint haze of domestic bliss in the air as people envisioned not having to drive to the office, staying home cocooned in weighted blankets while baking bread and writing that long overdue Great American Novel as the children busied themselves with pastel paints, macaroni art and TikTok videos.

When accusations land, should we separate the art from the artist?

19/02/2021
One of the biggest perceived threats to the modern-day celebrity is 'cancel culture'. It also happens to be one of the biggest myths. The idea that a person with a platform (which, in the 21st century, is often Twitter) can be de-platformed by society at large based on egregious behaviour or opinions has been disproven time and time again.
But when we look at the bigger picture, beyond Twitter and exaggerated tabloid headlines, we have to wonder if there are some kind of long-term repercussions for those who step over the line. The next question then becomes: what is the line? And who decides?

Leading ladies are taking over. Its the year of the 'Woman'

This awards season is shaping up as a veritable “Year of the Woman.” But amid the beautiful bounty of films boasting women front-row center — on either side of the camera — could a few similarly titled movies be causing confusion for both viewers and awards voters?
Sure, with almost 80 years of branding behind its beloved titular character, “Wonder Woman 1984” — brought to us by writer-director-producer Patty Jenkins and producer-star Gal Gadot — is probably not being confused with other, smaller releases. But consider the confusion that “I’m Your Woman,” “Pieces of a Woman” and “Promising Young Woman” could bring. These films could surely benefit from some demarcation and, always here to help, The Envelope breaks it down.
