Inside the Secretive Government Unit Saving American Lives Around the World

In a concrete hangar in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico,
Katrina Mayes is working with precision and purpose. Wisps of smoke surround her, wafting off the dry ice she is using to jerry-rig a cardboard vaccine carrier. Her task: to create a vapor phase vent to moderate the temperature of the cooling container from around minus 80 degrees Celsius (for storing Pfizer’s COVID-19 vials) to minus 15 degrees Celsius (to accommodate supplies of the Moderna vaccine).
At 29, the biochemist and virologist has spent much of her professional life indoors, where the U.S. government has entrusted her to handle some of the world’s most lethal pathogens—including Ebola, Lassa fever, and Nipah viruses—at top-secret Biosafety Level Four facilities. “I shower six times a day,” she tells me. “I’m the cleanest person you’ll ever meet.” Her winning smile and gallows humor mask the gravity of her work, which has involved diffusing poison-laced letters that have been mailed to federal buildings.

a-
"There are few ways in which a man can be more innocently employed than in getting money," is an insight the famed biographer James Boswell attributed to Samuel Johnson.
Clients of the late Bernie Madoff, however, might take issue.
Over four decades, Madoff, acclaimed as the greatest fraudster of them all, ran a Ponzi scheme that swindled 40,000 people, including his closest friends, out of $65 billion.
But if "getting money" is among the most innocent of callings, America has more than its fair share of the goodly people who excel at it.
According to
Forbes's 35th annual ranking of billionaires, last year witnessed a population explosion. Some 660 new billionaires were added to the number for a total of 2,755.

And more than one in every four billionaires is an American.

John Sidney McCainBudowsky: Liz Cheney vs. conservatives in name onlyCheney slams Trump on 'big lie' over electionExclusive — Cruz, Rubio ramp up criticisms of big businessMORE's widow, the suppression moves there were justified by a top Republican state representative saying elections should be based on "the quality of votes" — not everybody should be voting. Another Arizona Republican state legislator suggested stripping Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, of all election authority and giving it to the legislature — the same Republican legislature that has hired an obscure firm to recount last November's votes in Maricopa County, which provided Biden with his victory margin in November. There's no legitimate basis except to give the Trumpites another phony talking point — one of the ballot counters is a former state representative who was at the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol. It’s a harbinger of what they may do in the future.

Why the public is still leery of online brokerages
Lawsuits have popped up alleging wide-reaching conspiracies and gamification strategies at some of the most well-known firms. Online brokerages are increasingly responsible for rebuilding public trust.

The more than 10 million new brokerage accounts opened last year flooded retail investors into equity markets — but it also exposed cracks in online platforms in the process.
After the GameStop trading melee in January and February, lawsuits have popped up alleging wide-reaching conspiracies and gamification strategies at some of the most well-known brokerages, creating new riffs between online platforms and their clients.
After years of struggling to rebuild the reputational harm caused by the likes of Bernie Madoff and others, bad actors have left the financial advice industry dealing with a sometimes unsavory public perception. While the majority of retail investors believe financial advisers are required by law to act in their best interest, only 35% of investors said their advisers actually do, according to a CFA Institute survey published last year.

San Diego boat capsizes killing 4, injuring 24 in possible smuggling operation
A boat off the coast of San Diego overturned Sunday morning, killing four people and injuring 24 others -- one critically -- in what authorities say was a smuggling operation.
The incident happened around 10:15 a.m. off Point Loma near Cabrillo National Monument. Lifeguards, the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies responded to the scene after reports of an overturned vessel in the surf near the rocky peninsula.
Authorities recovered three bodies in the surf, San Diego Lifeguard Services Lt. Rick Romero said. One person was rescued from a cliff and 22 others managed to make it to shore, he said.

During a heated congressional hearing in February, Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez ripped into Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, grilling the Silicon Valley executive over how his fee-free trading app makes money.
As Tenev appeared via Zoom before the House Financial Services Committee, the Democratic member of Congress, from New York, zeroed in on "payment for order flow." It's a financially wonky term for a controversial practice in the trading world that lets big investment firms pay brokerages like Robinhood for routing traffic to them. Then the firms make the trades on Robinhood's behalf.

The GOP's Liz Cheney Purge May Be Upon Us

Card image cap

While it might not seem like flame-throwing for
Liz Cheney to call
Kevin McCarthy—along with
Mitch McConnell—the leader of the Republican party, her comments this weekend went a long way toward exacerbating strife within the caucus, where lawmakers are reportedly eager to oust Cheney from her leadership position—and are increasinglyvocal about doing so. “It’s at a boiling point,” one GOP lawmaker told The Hill. “I have to imagine if she doesn’t resign there will be a new vote in the near future, and the result will be lopsided in the opposite direction of what it was before.”

Ex-Netflix VP guilty of fraud after taking $500K in bribes and kickbacks from tech companies for streaming contracts

A FORMER Netflix executive has been found guilty of fraud after accepting more than $500,000 in bribes and kickbacks while overseeing the streaming giant's internet technology department.
Michael Kail, 49, was found guilty by a federal jury on Friday of accepting lucrative stock options and more than a half-million dollars in bribes from tech companies to approve IT contracts with Netflix.

According to a recent E*Trade survey of retail investors, 75 per cent of respondents fully or somewhat agreed that the stock market is in a bubble - in financial speak an investment so pumped up that it must burst. Yet 61 per cent still felt great about the future prospects of shares. In other words, the majority of DIY punters know that what they are buying is terribly overpriced but still think it wise to put more money into it. Such sentiment is not simply crazy. It reflects the recent experience of the shortest stock market crash on record. In the last 12 months everybody who played the stock market could make money, seasoned investors and novices alike. What we are experiencing is the mother of all bull markets, born, one could argue, in 2009.

In New York City Mayor's Race, Scott Stringer Is Hemorrhaging Support

New York Times. On Saturday, a number of progressive New York lawmakers followed suit, including state Senator
Alessandra Biaggi, Assemblywoman
Jamaal Bowman. Queens councilman
Jimmy Van Bramer also withdrew support, as did the New York chapter of Sunrise Movement, the climate-driven group that had co-backed Stringer and
Dianne Morales—whom the Working Families Party had also endorsed as a second choice to Stringer.
Stringer attempted to position himself as the leading progressive in New York City’s mayoral race, where he gained significant steam after the Working Families Party threw him their support a few weeks ago. Shortly thereafter, the United Federation of Teachers union’s endorsement gave him further momentum. With support crumbling this week, a Stringer campaign staffer made matters worse for the imperiled campaign by accusing Kim of having political connections to his opponent,

Is Trump Going to Get Off the Conservative Media Sidelines?

Card image cap

Despite all the predictions about
Donald
Trump venturing into the conservative media industry, the former president has yet to shake up the business since leaving the White House. His appearances on Fox News and Newsmax––mostly phoning them in, along with one in-person interview on
Hannity––have continued without the long-rumored launch of “Trump TV” or a similar enterprise. However, one group of investors have reportedly recognized Trump’s massive value in the right-wing media world and are taking it upon themselves to get him back in the game. The former president was recently pitched on founding an eponymously named conservative media and tech company, according to an Axios report. The concept involves “a conservative media powerhouse” called Trump Media Group “that will rival the liberal media and fight back against ‘Big Tech.’”

The Feds Fueled Income Inequality

YOUGHAL, IRELAND – Finally,
The Washington Post catches on…
The Fed helped fuel a stock market boom that benefited wealthy Americans – and left behind everyone else
Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic struck, the Federal Reserve has gotten plenty of kudos for moves that have helped stabilize the economy, kept house prices from tanking and supported the stock market. But those successes have obscured another effect: the inadvertent impact the Fed’s ultralow interest rates and bond-buying sprees are having on economic inequality.
Long-standing inequality in the United States has been exacerbated by the Fed’s role in touching off a multitrillion-dollar boom in stock markets – and stock ownership is heavily skewed toward the wealthiest Americans.

November 2020 was the 100-year anniversary of the imprisonment of Charles Ponzi – infamous creator of the fraudulent scheme to which he gave his name. Exactly a century later, Gutemberg Dos Santos, founder of AirBit Club, a cryptocurrency mining and trading company, was charged in the US with various offences relating to an alleged 'international investment scam', which, as described by the prosecutor, has all the hallmarks of a Ponzi scheme.

PIERS MORGAN: Somebody's got to pay for Santa Joe's insane $6TRILLION spending spree

'We all want to believe in Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and Bernie Madoff,' said Jordan Belfort, the real-life Wolf of Wall Street, last month.
He was speaking to the New York Times for a piece about the current renewed hysteria for the kind of dodgy unscrupulous speculative penny stock trading that launched Belfort's career.
The Times revealed there were 1.9 trillion transactions last month on the over-the-counter markets where such stocks trade, according to the industry regulator Finra – up by over 2,000 per cent from a year ago.
This has been partly driven by the general frenzy for get-rich-quick fads like Bitcoin, SPACs, meme stocks such as GameStop and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
