GOP leaders on three committees push Pelosi on stimulus markups

Congressional Black Caucus to push aggressive agenda

Expectations for meaningful legislation are high, but Rep. Joyce Beatty
“I think the pressure that we have is on our side ... we elected two new senators who were basically unknown to the nation ... and that was in part because of Black women and Black Americans,” Beatty told The Hill. “I think we are well-positioned to lead on voting rights and civil rights issues.”
The surprise blue sweep in Georgia — heavily credited to Stacey Abrams and the Peach State’s other Black voting rights activists — returned razor-thin control of the upper chamber back to Democrats. Vice President Harris will cast tie-breaking votes in the 50-50 Senate.

Senate trial seen as obstacle to bipartisan COVID-19 deal

Republican senators say former President Trump’s second impeachment trial is going to divide the parties and make it tougher to reach a bipartisan deal on COVID-19 relief legislation.

Biden DOJ to continue to seek Assange extradition

Justice Department spokesman Marc Raimondi confirmed that the new administration would continue to seek Assange’s extradition from the United Kingdom. The news was first reported by Reuters.
A group of organizations that advocate for civil liberties and human rights had urged Biden to drop the prosecution of Assange, arguing in a letter this week that “the government’s indictment of him poses a grave threat to press freedom both in the United States and abroad.”

“The indictment of Mr. Assange threatens press freedom because much of the conduct described in the indictment is conduct that journalists engage in routinely—and that they must engage in in order to do the work the public needs them to do,” said the letter, which was signed by two dozen groups including the American Civil Liberties Union, Human Rights Watch and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. “In our view, such a precedent in this case could effectively criminalize these common journalistic practices.”

House Republican campaign arm rolls out target list for midterms

A second tier of targets includes Democrats who won their seats by under 10 percentage points and underperformed Biden. Many of them also represent suburbs that were once GOP-friendly districts but swung hard against Republicans during the Trump era.
A third group includes 10 Democrats whose seats could be changed during redistricting in a way that could make them more competitive for Republicans.
“Republicans have a clear path back to the majority. President Biden, Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats will continue to push a radical, partisan agenda that is too extreme for middle-class families,” NRCC Executive Director John Billings wrote in the memo, referring to Nancy Pelosi

Jim Jordan: Rising power on the right?

If Republicans take back the House next year, Kevin McCarthy likely will be the next Speaker. Jordan once challenged him for party leader and was clobbered. If the Republicans fail to meet those expectations, McCarthy will be dumped; Jordan will likely make a move to replace him.

Jordan’s clout is not in policy or personal relations — he styles himself a "beer and blue jeans" populist, while voting against working class measures like expanding health care benefits and government-negotiated lower drug prices. Like Trump, Jordan’s power emanates from the media bullhorn, which he uses to arouse the passions of the core base. In the first five weeks of this year, Jordan was on Fox News nine times, almost every week on Lou Dobbs

Sanders vows $15 minimum wage bill will be in COVID relief package

Sanders on Wednesday pushed back against speculation that Democratic leaders will drop language increasing the federal minimum hourly wage from $7.25 to $15.
“It’s going to be in reconciliation if I have anything to say about it. The only way we’re going to get it passed — we’re not going to get the 60 votes that we need. The only way we’re going to do it with 50 votes is through reconciliation,” he said.

Sanders acknowledged Wednesday that raising the minimum wage to $15 won’t get any Republican support, which means he’s betting on Democrats unifying over a rescue package that includes a substantial hourly wage increase.
