Amazon has expressed its interest in bringing affordable broadband to India by entering the country's satcom market. The company's Project Kuiper aims to provide fast and affordable broadband to underserved communities, including rural areas. Amazon is currently in the process of obtaining the necessary approvals from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre and is expected to apply for a GMPCS license from the telecommunications department.

​This would make the US e-commerce firm the latest entrant in India's nascent but fast-growing satellite communications (satcom) market. Amazon would be pitted against the likes of Elon Musk-owned Starlink, Bharti-backed Oneweb and Reliance Industries' Jio Satellite in India which has issued a new space policy earlier this year aimed at spurring private investments in the sector.

The IN-SPACe said it has created a framework to disseminate Indian standards based on internationally accepted best practices.

Two recent agreements, in Bahrain and India, underline the growing importance of the space sector in areas like IoT and the cloud.

As many as 23 companies have evinced interest in acquiring the Indian space agency's Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) technology, a top official of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has said.
