Rudy's wires entering an American citizen from sea to shining sea what a difference a freedom I'm permitted any Gillum who walk the frontlines of freedom team really appreciate you joining us this fine day in America here's we have for this hour we're going to drop by maybe Navy vet Jeff Wilson to discuss his latest book in his cold water and we'll review the movie the month with the hand raver and naturally we will review last weekend's scabby football games and will conclude with our weekly mailbag military history I'm going to report troops I welcome your comments and questions contact me through frontlines of freedom dot com It's a pleasure to introduce Navy vet Jeff Wilson he's quite a writer indeed your 5th book in your fear one series is about to come out as yeah that's correct that's the theory that Brian and I write together it but when we make a living so we're always excited when one of those come to us and you've got your parole officer as I think of Brian Andrews with you today who introduced Brian Yeah Brian Andrews is the key to the whole thing we kid around a lot but I will tell you Brian is another Davey veteran submarine officer and all around super intellectual guy he is definitely the brains of our operation after the Navy he went on to get is m.b.a. At Cornell and was a park leadership fellows so I just bask in his reflected glory by and you got him well trained don't you Brian. That's for sure but you know he can cash that check now for that nice. Well anyway welcome guys Jeff start by giving us a quick review your time in the Navy Yes sure so my entire life including my Navy career is a little bit schizo frantic I've done lots of different things started out in aviation before I got a motorcycle accident and went and did some other government service for awhile left that to go to medical school so I could live a life of peace and then they crashed the planes into those towers and it pissed me off so I went back into the Navy as a surgeon deployed with the United States Marine Corps a 1st team surgeon and then after that point to Iraq was recruited to serve in naval special warfare where I spent the rest of my naval career as a combat surgeon with East Coast based Seal team and Brian tell us about your story I served as a nuclear submarine officer on a fast track submarine stationed out of Pearl Harbor and after that my 1st tour and went to business school like Jeff mentioned an introduction and after that that some entrepreneurial things but I always had this deep seated desire to tell stories and write a book and just kind of mission over to running full time and what Jeff will sounds like fun I spent about 4 hours on a submarine once I'm $63.00 and I found every piece of metal for head high. So I'm glad you liked it because I certainly would not have done a good job there Ok it is an interesting life if you're just a cog in the machine you're literally inside the guts of machine just it's like ants crawling around inside a hive you're there to work for that reactor and and that platform it's an interesting psychological experiment really well Jeff we've interacted before and will again. Start by tell us what tell us about the serial one series. Well the Tier one series is I have to give credit where credit is due it was born out of a germ of an idea that Brian had Brian and I were both writers already and Thriller fest in New York a few years ago and he had this idea to sort of combine our backgrounds of special warfare and submarines I mean suggested maybe we could write some books together doing submarines and seals and that sort of thing and so it sort of borne out of that the idea for this book this series the 1st book in this series introduces us to John Dempsey who is a former Tier one seal his entire unit is wiped out in a horrible ambush overseas and he's the lone survivor and is given the opportunity by his former c.s.o. Now works for a spooky organization called Amber to have a new identity and join him and dedicate his like to hunting down those responsible so that's sort of the Tier one series that its initial evolution but it's evolved into a lot more the amber team which is what John Dempsey leads as a direct action assaulter is more than just deals they do spy missions and covert operations and so it's a very small unit direct action team that hunts down the worst of the worst around the world and so we just really had a great time writing the series it's been well received and boy what a fun ride it's been that I believe the scrutiny Goleman from was a freedom we're discussing some interesting novels with Geoff Wilson and Brian Andrews Brian talk about the book that's going to come out it's next month that is coming out right that's correct book 5 in a tear one series The title was actor and it's the 2nd book in our rush a trilogy so the tear one series is back to back trilogies the 1st 3 books focused on the Middle East and Iran and these next 3 books are focusing on Russia as they can and false flag operations to destabilize their own and American interest in Europe and the Middle East. And our main character still there oh for sure he's on down dance matter with his through all the series What's one thing that's fun about our series I think is that we do have characters that come and go we try to incorporate other organizations at times Amber will work with the i.a.e.a. Genser they'll work with elements of the CIA or they'll work with maybe seals or Army Rangers and so there's a lot of characters that come and go for the core element of the unit this am the shadowy ember team is John Dempsey and his merry band of assaulters including Elizabeth Grimes who has become a series favorite and is their designated sniper now and we've got Dan Mon and there's a lot of cool players but that team and John Dempsey in particular pull through as a threat in all of the series that's cool I have not read all your books I think I've read 2 of them in that series and what I appreciated was it's real my b.s. Alarm didn't go off saying yeah right that I felt that we have to do we have to worry that Denny because you know we're both tied to the community so we have people that are going to call us on it and we don't want those phone calls like what are you fighting we work really hard to find some authenticity and I think you do if you just write about characters instead of technology you know what I mean yes that's a good point I never thought of it that way the book is going to come out next month how can people buy a copy I presume Amazon's How do they get copies. Yeah the book is available for sale on Amazon and autumn so if you like digital you can get your Kindle version if you like paper you can order a paperback for if you're into audio books we have a fantastic voice actor Cape May Porter Award winning actor he performs the whole series does all the characters and that's available on Audible I'm going to get one of those because I really like listening to books while I'm driving so that's a huge ever thought about that there's a lot of people that Brian you're a big ol guy right you know for the same reason and he was just imagining I mean when you're in the car and you you're commuting or you are going on a trip you know that's just it time and it's great to have a story told to specially by the you know professional voice actors who really bring all the characters to life the time just cruises by you know you'll be listening for 3 hours and you won't even realize that that time is gone but yeah I totally agree Jeff gives a wrap up what do you want listeners to take away from our conversation today about this book What's the best stuff about all I think that what we do particularly well especially with our military background is right realistic compelling character so we do everything we can to get the geopolitics right I'll tell you we've been very blessed very lucky at times that we seem almost prescient in that we write things and 6 months later they stand up and I've got to say we're geniuses but it's just a lot so those things are fun and exciting but I think what brings our books to life in the Tier one series is the characters and writing realistic covert operators instead of the superheroes men of steel that you tend to see in t.v. And film we write them is real people with real relationships and fallibilities and project that has that time and so I think that's what makes it different that in fact we try to do the same thing with our bad guys so our antagonists also we give the motivation you know every every bad guy is a good guy in his own mind and we try to reflect that in the books and give them some depth of character as well instead of just the guy at the cabinet chair and we try to make realistic compelling antagonists as well so I think that's the thing that sets the Tier one series up. Pardon why it's been so well recently you've made a really good point because your terrorist could be my freedom fighter bright bad guys aren't necessarily bad guys but they are bad to us Brian what you're far right they're different goals right that's the only difference Brian what's your final thought I think Jeff really nailed it right there you know we try to fill this cast of characters as a family and the John Dancy and his team mates on this task force you know their family and now that we're on book side working on book 6 I mean you've lived with these people now for 3 years you've gone through all the ups and downs both professional and personal that they've experienced as they try to serve and protect the Constitution an interesting night States but also to try to find a way to manage their own personal loss and difficulties that come with operating at the point of the spear so you feel like you're part of that family I feel when you're reading the story well said Guys thank you Jeff thank you for joining us today it's always such a pleasure to talk to you Denny anytime and Brian good to meet you I hope to have you guys back again you too thanks so much for this interview and thank you guys for your books and for your service to our nation I appreciate your God bless you I'm going to give them the next novel review the movie the month with Diane Raper Then with us we can survive because all games vomit reported for duty to run through them this is going to give them one of the balance on one foot for 3 minutes then bounce on the other foot we're going to do this while thinking patriotic thoughts I'll be right back. Kate you are an. One can really give thanks for joining us today on frontlines of freedom it's a pleasure to welcome our team member Diane raver from the card State Film Festival back to the show to review this month's movie of the month so welcome back Diana glad to have you Thank you Danny it's always an honor and a privilege to be with you a real good team members yes I am the movie you provided for us for this month remembering the fallen was amazing and hard moving and yet no words were spoken How did you feel when you 1st saw this movie that it was a movie Amazingly I thought I was going to say I thought that it uses the craft of filmmaking beautifully in that it was very moving yet the it was you know again as you say M.O.'s made outstanding as they say in the business and that. The cinematography was beautiful it was just a beautiful piece of independent filmmaking and I was very pleased to to share it with you Well it was so touching you know I'm fond of saying how big tough Army Airborne Ranger I never cry but sometimes my sweat Well maybe my. The other thing a bad it was that even under the redeeming quality of this film was even under the most horrendous of circumstances and you know we will all agree that war although to sometimes necessary is just you know Hell is to quote. Dead humanity still exist in that you know yeah obviously this was a young boy who you know was just following orders and it was it was just so redeeming to see that you know that the Allied fellow you know helped him along his way yeah this is really the story of 2 young men one was a German soldier World War one or 2 and the other one was French am I right I believe French Yes Ok well as a combative interment I felt the movie was both accurate and amazing in the story here are some of the listener comments one an amazing movie and one with no words it's rare to get my attention with no words to I can't imagine coming to all laying on a battlefield wounded because that's how our hero the Frenchman he suddenly found himself laying on the battlefield with just one and apparently nobody else around him that was scare the heck out of me wouldn't you absolutely so I'm laying there on a battlefield wounded surrounded by dead soldiers finding I can still move but not sure where to go that not sure where to go is with think that would have I think rattled my cage seriously but it's certainly part of the story and the next comment was it must be horrible to find yourself wounded in the gut bleeding hurting no help and no idea what to do that sure sets up another to keep my attention right. The next comment I can imagine the pain of staying in full combat rig and walking and walking and getting nowhere obviously and keep walking the guy just kept going on I guess the desire to live does that I was just in the saide speech to our survival instinct doesn't it Danny I mean what a wonderful thing that the universe gave us all the such a marvelous survival instinct. Then he heard and found a wounded German soldier on the ground he approached him tactically weapons pointed out and everything realized this guy was like him sat down and they shared with each other it was almost like they recognize each other as brothers and just acted like brothers. Again that speaks to the universal universal ality of of you know us is humans on this planet and even in opposing. You know they pose the oppositions are usually political and you know basically we're all humans on this planet in this mess together and what a what a what a beautiful film the way it brought that out I just thought it was beautifully presented and I don't know that it would be true but it was it was beautifully presented to you know speak to our humanity I just loved it yes I agree all betta did happen on occasion this is true. This is hurt if you go among friends of freedom were discussing the movie of the month with Diane raver next comment I didn't know if I should be surprised or not when the German gave him his pistol and clearly wanted to be shot and put out of his pain but the Frenchman didn't shoot it you know if I'm your brother and you really are in pain and want to get out of pain on the other hand I want to shoot. I don't think I would have shot it either but wow after a while I got up I thought he was going to shake the Germans hand and leave but he pulled him up and took him with him wasn't that beautiful oh just beautiful you talk about the brotherhood of man there it was they were brothers and indeed the next comment is I guess is an example of what they mean when they say soldiers are brothers national was wherever they ended up they both apparently survived the war and at least our guy lived a good life as we don't know which guy was the movie was about one of them lived a good life because he was there with his family took him there to their grave presumably because he knew where his buddy was buried his buddies musta lived a pretty good life and they musta stayed in touch a bit after the war that's my assumption and it's interesting how the leaf the movie started with a leaf coming down out of a tree and landing on the the guy slap at the end leaf came down out of the tree and landed I noticed that that was very 1st Gump with the feather Yeah it was beautifully that beautifully crafted it was lovely it tied the whole thing together so Diane you did it again you picked a movie that was just awesome we got to get not a minute or so talk to us about the Garden State Film Festival. Well we're seeing the entries are pouring in and oh my god they're wonderful of course the dates for our March 25th through the 29th 2020 in Asbury Park New Jersey love to see any and all of your listeners be with us we're just thrilled to be with you once a month and. Welcome back to financial freedom I'm Colonel Denny Gillum I really do welcome your comments or questions troops contact me through phone lots of freedom dot com order on Facebook groups as you know a service academy football season and joining me of course is my buddy our cup football co-host Quint Roberts welcome back bro let's start with the winners Navy 35 to 3 and air forces 2056 to 26 where do you start 1st about how why you want to start or. Well Danny we can go to the island of Oahu where and how to Lulu the capital city where the Air Force Falcons rumbled to a 56 to 26 when at the wiring bowls for the 2nd straight week Air Force term a close firsthand game into a blowout when I was it was really rather impressive and this lifted the Falcons to 5 and 2 on the season and 3 and one in Mountain West play it was senior Mike Schmidt who came in at quarterback when starter Donald Hammond The 3rd was injured on the 1st drive of the game for the Falcons it looked bleak when they had to go to the backup quarterback but as the Montreux goals next man up in the Falcon all fans did not miss a beat they turned out $522.00 yards of off ramps with $353.00 coming on the ground Schmidt also threw for $147.00 yards on just 5 completions including a $75.00 yard touchdown strike to Durata Sanders for his 1st career touchdown pass the Schmidt didn't stop there though he led the Falcons it with 120 yards and rushing as well and 3 touchdowns so for a senior to come off of the bench to have that kind of a game was just a real testament to the young man himself and to the coaching staff are having him ready to play because you just never know when you're going to have to step up and it will be called upon Air Force held a 28 to 20 lead at halftime and outscored Hawaii in the 2nd half 28 to 6 The Rainbow's dropped to 43 overall and one in 2 in the Mountain West Conference. Rousing victory for the Falcons as they want to why Dan and I could say they moved 2 to 5 and 2 as of now with their only 2 losses coming to Navy unfortunately. And see they would be Colorado where they had one of the losses the scapes right now but they moved 5 and 2 and are on their way to another really good season in a bowl season where they can return to a bowl game. Boise State with the other team at last 2 who still undefeated as a matter of fact. Ok well that's a winner and Navy Whoa whoa whoa that you know sell floor for. A long walk home today 35 years wow I tell you what Navy really brought out the Big 1000 and the aircraft carriers and everything else boy did they really hound South Florida 35 to 3 I tell you what the story of the season for the Navy is their defense. In every game but won their won loss they've held James under under 25 points Air Force has scored the most 25 points in that maybe victory so the defense for Navy is really on a are really taking the team to another level they're getting steady play from senior quarterback Malcolm Perry who finished with 188 yards on 22 carries on a pair of touchdowns he went over 3000 yards rushing for his career joining Keenan Reynolds Napoleon McCallum and Chris McCoy as the only Navy players to accomplish that feat the midshipman have a 3 game winning streak for the 1st time since 2017 when they won 5 straight to start the year going back to the defense they were led by junior linebacker Jacob Springer who had a career high 3 sacks as well as freshman challenge arms who had an interception the minutes have had 17 sacks on the here. And last year in total finished with only 10 that shows you how much they have improved on defense South Florida dropped to $3.00 and $4.00 wanted to win American Athletic Conference So again Navy is is really looking good they stay open the scoring it was maybe early and often. As they took a they went up 21 c. Row before South Florida got on board with a field goal. In the 2nd quarter and so they went to the have 21 to 3 maybe tacked on 14 more points in the 4th quarter to just pull away at 35 to 3 not their. 5th victory of the season and 6 tries done good this is going to go on from a freedom we're discussing service academy football with Quint Roberts and my home team my alma mater army they lost to Georgia State 21 to 28 at least it wasn't a big loss but some days us and some days you know when an army needs to get back in the winning stage. You know that any army is it's a ploy if you talk about. Going to see a fall from grace but outfit returned to Earth anyway in 0 after last year's tremendous record setting season they have fallen to 3 in 4 and just don't seem to click like the quite like they did last year as they failed at Georgia State $28.00 to $21.00 in Atlanta Georgia Army was led by commerce Connor slammed with $89.00 yards on the ground and Georgia State had a total of 379 yards on all fronts with 232 coming through the air. Georgia State took advantage of a miscue on a fake punt by army and took a 70 lead with 747 left to go in the 1st quarter on a 24 yard touchdown strike from Ellington to Pinckney and now Army did not give up though they they again they fought back and they fought and they fought and they made it a game and as the they wanted to have tied Fort team for team and army took the lead in the 3rd quarter 2114. Georgia State came back scored in the 4th quarter but army continued to drive the ball and on a 4th down play on their final drive. Calvin how can this was intercepted as it within the 5 yard line as army was trying to score the. Timing and touchdown an extra point and so they just fell short again they didn't it wasn't that they played so poorly. It was pretty much an evenly matched game as Army had a total of $343.00 yards but they had the 2 turnovers killed them and even though they dominated the time of possession 38 minutes to Georgia State's 21. Yes sir well next week army gets to host San Jose State Navy host Tulane and Air Force host Utah Utah state that's right then they sure do and I tell you tough state is a is a pretty good team Denning it's going to be a tough match up for air force they're going to be an underdog in this game and the Falcons are going to have to really really play well in order to how to come away with a victory when you look at Army they are going to kick off against San Jose State their governor after their 2 camera trip they return home again sandals a state their favorite by 9 points. In that game and of course Navy. See who they have next week they held to line for homecoming so. You know hopefully the maids will be able to pick up where they left off and and continue their role well said my my friend there's a really good chance that we will be able to celebrate 3 victories as we look at this weekend's games so everybody be cheering for Army Navy and Air Force. I don't remember why but I was in the school's very extensive museum earlier that week and saw a really mean looking Nazi made submachine gun back in those innocent days I just checked that out I was going to do a skit with a German accent we played good enjoy our steaks well I couldn't carry it into the mess hall as we marched informally So I went to the mess hall early and placed the machine gun on my chair Well one of the waiters who was repairing the table as for the meal stumbled on my machine gun freaked out and someone in authority came and took it imagine my surprise when I got there and my submachine gun was missing concern didn't last long as an author showed up at the table with my weapon wanted to know which dump leave it left a machine gun or civilian waiters to get to it I got a good chewing it out without a good laugh and I did enjoy my steak kernel you screwed up but I got to tell you it was worth it just so that we can laugh about it decades later it's true and the steak was good too now as most are history time laid out skip on 31 October 1941 the Us Navy destroyer Reuben James was torpedoed by a German u. The vehicle owner called police immediately to report what had happened and waited for the officers to arrive the woman with the car jacker allegedly fled the scene however police reportedly found her hiding in an area residents and arrested her she was booked in jail on 2 felony counts including armed robbery Thanks Colonel This story is the oldest trick in the book but one that still works and is used time and time again with great effectiveness since the dawn of time criminals have used women to act as decoys to distract unsuspecting victims sometimes a woman will knock on your door while armed men wait hiding in the bushes while other times they sneak up from behind while you're talking to the woman from inside your own vehicle Well it's a natural instinct for men to be distracted by women it's paramount that you not lower your guard when a woman you don't know approaches you in a public space sometimes they feign helplessness and want you to go with them somewhere or give them a ride this is a bad idea for a lot of reasons don't fall for it I'm not saying you should never help a damsel in distress I'm just saying you should listen to your gut instincts and be very very careful in this case the young man was aware enough and brave enough to draw and fire his gun before he was stabbed one of the challenges here is getting out of the car without getting stabbed or shot police officers refer to their vehicles as mobile coffins when faced with a gun wielding attacker get out of the vehicle as you draw your gun and seek the cover of the engine block if the attacker has a knife shot unlock the door if possible and then draw your gun this young man did a great job keeping his cool and taking down the bad guy my word of advice chivalry isn't dead but you just might be if you fall prey to a nefarious damsel in distress that's like seriously good real truth. The leg the leg the the challenge California is really great but I think we started off in the Northeast went to California and we kind of did a fly over over the Great Plains and I think we're going to head back there to the central part of Turtle Island and out there it's not like it's not the court we have. Is dialectic It's called not that's a division of that tribe or community and they're known as Miles of which means red iron so here on the top poetry always something if you got a niche you're got a stretch of so here's what they got called Twitch. Sean Michael period without oil tourist a question about how long will the freedom when Stein voices from the circle Well one of the descendants of the folks who perhaps were looking for that freedom not so long ago and in the Cherokee Nation when they make that that infamous Trail of Tears from the Carolinas out there were called homo at the request of the United States government not being a little flippant about it wasn't a request. But one of their descendants is a guy named Mark Cleveland who lives right here in Chicago has a great group piece a great entertainer but a lot of what he does is inspired by his ancestors and one of the things he phone is that of all those turkey people who walk that Trail of Tears well they learned one thing and it carried over even though the journey is over so every time you got to do something you got to get up and walk. Chicago's Mar Cleveland from the Cherokee Nation with something that well in her determines ancestors and your ability to get up and walk to matter what happens and Kleiner back up and violin in the background I'm voices from the circle Well I think what we're going to do was have this reminder that you're hearing this on native voice one the Native American radio service if you want to hear native radio 247 just go to envy one the numeral one that a word Gee that's Native American radio 24 hours a day 7 days a week and you're hearing it right now. Radio 60 minutes past 12 how haps I was playing that just now because the Fab 4 are back to mark 50 years of the release of Abbey Road the Strad subscription rooms you can have a special concert and to warm up the Beatles are busking on the steps of the sub rooms in Stroud today let's talk to poll from the tribute band all you need is the Beatles. Hey yeah I would like to say I would love this wait a bit at the moment you know that's the plan but I don't know. It's not a problem some of you would like to. So if you're late for work how are you really Paul My name's Joe Really I'm going to come from the records no yeah but there you go Joe tell me about all you need is a burrito than what you're doing in front of the sub rooms so well I mean for the last probably 10 years we've done a an anniversary concert at the submarines and so this year we're doing the 50th anniversary of the release of Abbey Road So it's yeah it's pretty exciting we've been practicing hard and yeah we're pretty much ready next Saturday the 7th doors open at 7 pm But today we are just going to you know promoting it's playing outside the sub rooms in about 5 minutes probably wonderful 50 years since Abbey Road for a lot of people you know this is quite a landmark moment for a lot of people that need to be educated here and what all the fuss is about just how how monumental was this I think that some people saw it as being like the 1st kind of like walk out prize money because you know they would bring in different elements of songs together and in terms of production you know it's a big leap forward. George Martin at the helm you know they kind of invite him back to the studio and he suggested a bit but I think I should tell you and John Lennon more details on this. Allowed John speaking. Hello John how are you not so bad thanks good good it's Julian really that we. Didn't tell you about you then. Well I've been to the bill. Kid my dad. John in 1969 when we're doing the betting for peace the damn hill. The time in the story when I was a kid so I developed a very interest in the Beatles and of being obsessed with my best so I just put the picture for me now to set the scene for me at Stroud sober and what's going on. With the. Protesters largely dispersed when we turned up we thought they were us it wasn't against you I don't think NO NO NO. I know a lot of Jared going on so now we're just setting up we're going to be playing some songs so maybe wrote the songs for the rest of your career and you know might not show next Saturday brilliant time and place next Saturday then separate obviously yeah yeah seriously RIM's Yeah but the. First game got started back in 962 like Joe was saying you know we played it for the last 10 years and we love coming back to to the subset it was a great crowd and a lot of people we saw but it was in $62.00 you know come every year to see us nice Well John Lennon who famously said it will be the usual rubbish but it won't cost much. I don't know I don't know how. Many times many many times you know brooms Saturday next Saturday September the 7th that separates all you will set up shop so you see them in the setting up. No So we stock up because we can just. Fair enough I was going to say the position to play is a bit but you're still in the middle of it so I know you've got on top of a Anybody in Stroud can come and find you today and enjoy the music of The Beatles want to for good to talk to you guys Yeah thank you. Babai There you go then some of the guys from all you need is the Beatles tribute to the Beatles there outside the sub rooms in Strout to promote the concert next week to mark 50 to about 50 years of the release of Abbey Road So if you're walking around strata day you did a bit of shopping and you go past the suburbs and you wonder why the Beatles outside the suburbs what's going on that's why. This is simple is that you know quickly to the fact it's all there outside the suburbs got long said to the me joy the music of The Beatles at that gig in Stroud next week the missing project aims to bustle the last conversation asking some of the questions he wanted to ask how lucky are we to be healthy there's no screening Yeah that's my motto in the. Choices and individuality define us dressing the way I do I find that people come to me the way for me to engage with conversation and lessons we should land. On the. Forest and there. Keith gave his ring and said look you know great that we're following the cricket nothing but could you please not give the score in the cricket perhaps you want to give it like a warning you know look away now kind of thing in a way he thought I did a bit to the mockery I said for goodness sake you know why would we be bothered with the cricket we're going to lose we're going to we are no chance absolutely no chance if you don't follow cricket they were I don't know if you put if you put a fair amount of money on England winning you you would've you would've lost it quite comfortably that that was the way it was going at the very least you know the way what they can when they were going to be dumped last Saturday and then suddenly this up and running comes back coming from the far end you both are still to have as if I am I talking to a different I am probably I think when we're in the game so Keith I apologize there's me I am I think part of the fear that's me sitting there going now no chance no chance no chance and what Stokes 835 and Jack Leach bless him won the greatest one knocked out ever as we say but they get so they are case from a 2 year i Pod I shall never be so glass half empty ever again so what a great weekend what a fantastic weekend it was we're off on a bit of a wildlife trail next with Ian Maguire wildlife expert on the Gloucester unsharp mask. And I have some clues for you for the quick. Oh yes. 5 questions the joined up quiz all of them knitted together I've got some big joined up quiz news for you as well. Or yes you can hear more of it very soon. If you're a fan if you're not blind. Details on the wife after Linda's fall and run for her. 20 minutes before we do the quiz the joined up quest to die 5 questions old linked together in some way shape or form between you and maybe go to unravel the links as we go the 5 questions today sent around the following topics geography geography quiz shows music film and music so why do those again geography geography. Chris shows music and film music those are the 5 sort of subject areas that we're looking for today they're rather good if I do say so myself their goods to day so they are coming up in about 20 minutes or so and you going to get a bit more of the joined up quiz in the weeks to come when I'm in on the afternoon show for the next 3 weeks so looking forward to that immensely will do that from Monday but this 5 are going to stand alone so we're not going to roll them over to Monday if they don't go anywhere today we'll roll them over the next week so stand by for that one joined up because coming up in about 20 minutes time. Now earlier on this week I met for a lovely walked on the doctrine sharpness canal if you've been listening to me long enough you know it's one of my favorite spots beautiful all times a year I say lovely bit of tranquility but you don't often notice the changes you notice the yet the seasons change so that's where I recruited our wildlife in McGuire into wildlife expert of many years standing a particular interest is in bird life with a particular focus on but you know is all that we still know when it comes to spotting the signs of of what's going on as far as nature is concerned so we pick up our walk at 7 o'clock a believe it was Thursday night that was it separate lock Thursday night somewhere on the Gloucester sharpness canal. So picked a nice late summer early autumn evening to come for a walk down the Gloucester shop with Kelly we've been here before this spot this spot was a great spot for kingfish not so long ago for us was in it it was yes that's right Dave and you know it's a good place to kingfishers and obviously you've got a lot of. Banks a tree lined lots of perch in posts for them and lots of little fish especially now this time of year with the coming this is what you got a little young animals at this time of year lots of fish lots of birds you've got teenage mammals you know they're all finding their way well we spot a lot of these yes Law feathers but this time of year why well basically birds of course in the breeding season they it's a very. Tough time for them they there's a lot actors especially the female birds they're on the nest with the chicks and so through all of that effort their feathers wear and so every year they do what we call mult which is where they slowly drop their feathers one by one of his and got more of the same type no no no but they slowly drop the feathers and new fathers grow through and that's why a lot. People say to me and I recent weeks I've been saying I'm not seen so many birds in the garden and the reason is that we've come to for a lot of birds the end of their breeding season and a lot of birds now are in Multan they're keeping out of the way they're all see no quick when they don't have the full Saudis feathers so it makes sense just to hide away in the hedges in the trees just scale down a bit and allow these for this to grow through and then they will be looking fantastic by the time we get into October ready to look good for the breeding season in the spring Yeah I've never seen so many but I guess that's because I'm looking for the bit about what you know as we will pass Yeah is a typical we've been talking Well absolutely everywhere all the latest tell me Yeah this is indicative then a bit of a bit of a change in the seasons isn't it really this T.V. It is amusing as you know we're really not copes well sort of she likes Jackie things at 7 o'clock on a already evening in late August it's kind of feels it isn't it yes this is the kind of the beginning of the transition. And you know if you are in the countryside or I'm falling you'll begin to see swallows gathering where then I think in the back the long journey back to Africa and indeed on the other side of the channel there's birds which are going to be also making their way up and so we're going to have a change of shifts where we have our breeding birds that sort of some a breed of spring breeders that the migrant birds will be coming up. In the spring to do their breeding they'll be going back now and then we have birds that have bred in other continents and they'll be coming over to us to winter in our model the relatively mild conditions typically those birds would often be coming from the likes of Russia Scandinavia and the whole system is slim bridges you know with a few weeks yet to it so yeah you know they're coming to a place where they can survive what is otherwise very harsh conditions in Russia and places like this. Yes a lot of movement is going to be happening in the in the coming weeks and coming to the waterways I always think is an interesting almost barometer if you like of that change to see how because I can I walk this all year round through all 4 seasons and you do notice the changes more particularly I think by the waterside where you do in this is what's so beautiful a by. About nature in a barren Mint is that it's never stays the same is constantly changing and I mean I love spring but I also love autumn as well because of the fact that you do have this this transition and with that you do get to see new things very often and certainly as I mentioned on the walk earlier on. People now are going to start hearing 20 else that. The. 2 it throughout That's the already rich but she's got a point there well where you really you're really excel we've been al crowds together well yes and I should be soon doing some of those in the coming weeks because this is the time of year where you've got. Them arguing over territories and that's when people hear them and so we've got young birds that have been. Hatched and reared in woodlands which are now flying around trying to find their way of their going back to the NATO territories adults or join them also you know find your own place to live and you've got an awful lot of arguments and ask were you going exactly for me it's the beginning of the winter really in a way but it's very special time of year so certain species will start to make themselves much more. Relevant and much more obvious when it comes to the out. Of or got the calls or much of much this or is there a way that you can identify distinctive if you do you're going to see it all the more than anything else at least we're going to hear it's doing what I want you. Yeah I mean the funny thing is that if anything you know you more got more chance of see maybe see him pan out and you had lights or maybe a little on top of the phone building or telegraph pole but it's only now although it's the one we hear and he's often living close to people in parts garden city centers even as well as the countryside is the one that's actually hard to see because they're very nocturnal and you certainly hear them and that's why a lot of the reste the monitoring of 20 ALS isn't necessarily all visual records it's often on hearing you know calling records in the territorial so where you in your typical woodland the wrangles to show you're going to have woodlands were actually there could be 67 in some cases twenty's or for that Tara chair when you call in the way they do is call it if they get to the point where they get too close and nobody is listening they will sometimes attack each other they can get quite violent but the territorial pair will want to hold on to that territory. Because it's they've got the knowledge of it so that constantly patrolling and protecting these areas so yes this is all going on as tell me it's great wildlife expert in a guy with me on the Gloucester and shot this canal to hear more from him a little bit later on in the program. Just sometimes I'm down. There so I well I am a cab. Tarts Jess Glynne and Thursday on B.B.C. Said that while the v.a. Has taken action to ensure its facilities provide timely access to medical care it must do more Draper said the v.a. Has made progress since the g.a.o. 1st warned in 2012 of shortcomings in its appointment scheduling and tracking system as well as lengthy delays in patient care but she added that the V.A.'s data on wait times remains unreliable and appointment delays continue to be law Draper said quote At this time we continue to be concerned that the a has not sufficiently addressed the reliability of its wait time data for example we have found that V.A.'s wait times do not capture the time it takes the department to enroll veterans in v.a. Health care benefits which we found could be quite lengthy and quote that issue is not restricted to appointments at v.a. Health facilities she said adding that wait times data for the v.a. Choice program a community care program that lets veterans See care at a private facility was incomplete or inaccurate the v.a. Has taken a number of actions one is by annual audits of schedulers and the most recent in 2018 they audited roughly 667000 appointments and they found an 8 percent error rate so that affected about $53000.00 appointments there was deep in horrible corruption when this problem surface I believe the corruption has been fully resolved but changing in the organization as big as the v.a. Iran seeks to raise the level of a struggle against Israel to damage Israel's deterrent power but also to negatively affect its economy tourism morale and internal unity the Iranians want to drag Israel into the kind of bloodbath they created in Iraq Yemen and Lebanon to consolidate their control they are arming supplying financing and training the various Shiite groups to gain a physical foothold in the Arab world and to encircle the Saudis Jordanians and Israel with the Northern tentacle of the arraigning octopus Iraq Syria and Lebanon and with its southern arm Yemen cutter is also locked in an Iranian embrace Saudi Arabia is the loser in its long term dispute with Iran mainly because of the support President Obama gave the Ayatollah has and their aspirations by handing them billions of dollars and signing the generous nuclear agreement concurrently granting them economic breathing space by ending the sanctions that threaten the regime stability the cold shoulder Obama gave the Saudis and its support for the Iranians weaken the Saudi economy to the point where they had to limit their aid to its allies in Yemen Iraq Syria and Lebanon Fortunately our new economic sanctions against Iran are changing things still Iran continues to focus on Israel Israel must plan its response one option is to repeat the failed Saudi efforts to battle Iran's proxies and the Shiite militias armed and funded by Iran that means a long list of incidents over many years in which the Iranians attack and we retaliate they shoot at and we respond at cetera plus the constant price of dead and wounded frayed Israeli nerves and limited tourism so we must think out of the box what will solve the Iranian problem and liberate the world from the danger posed by the Ayatollah So how about breaking up Iran into its at the components Iran is a country with dozens of ethnic parts with the Persians making up a little more than half of the population and the rest is. Hours below choose Kurds Arabs Turkoman kasi and what have you now Biloxi's Kurds and some of the Arabs are Sunni and in a permanent state of rebellion against a central government the groups they have spawned are constantly in rebellion from acts of general sabotage to attacking government institutions police army and security forces the Arab minority in whose region the oil and gas reserves of the country are found consider their lands occupied territory and demand independence from Iran Iran tries to hide the opposition's activities it doesn't allow foreign journalists into the mutinous regions of social media does report this hasn't yet been noticed by the world there is a deep hatred of the Ayatollah simmering inside large sectors of Iranian society a hatred that burst into the streets in a series of large demonstrations that occurred during the Obama administration and we did 0 to encourage or help them it happened again last November and have not yet entirely dissipated. This is the soft underbelly the ethnic groups fighting for independence and the youngsters fighting for liberty Israel can help those forces hey it's exactly what the Iranians do anywhere find someone willing to attack the system using Iranian money besides Iran's long term support for Palestinian terror groups justifies every Israeli action against the Ayatollah as a form of self-defense recognize an international law Iran publicly supports terrorist organizations in Gaza Judea and some area sends drones against Israel defines us off as being in a state of war against Israel the world must examine the ayatollah as actions and make them pay for every violation of civil women and minorities rights in Iran giving Iranian men women and minorities a feeling that someone stands behind them and supports their demands this will strengthen the resolve to fight the despotic regime ruling Iran and bring them to act in a determined way to achieve liberty thereby freeing the other nations of the world from the threat of its dark cloud that's a clear way to free the world of the threat of the ayatollah is to free the Middle East from their grasp and to save Iran's minorities and its citizens from a slow death under those who believe the supreme leader is omnipotent economic sanctions we have placed on Iran are seriously hurting them and have severely reduced their ability to fund many of their terrorist organizations this is a valid but temporary solution the world must start a brush fire burning in the ayatollah as backyard and send them off to oblivion and those are my comments for today this is a Marine vets get choreo you're listening the frontlines of freedom we now get to enjoy some war and wisdom which Chief Warrant Officer role in Ashby what you have to share this week Roland skip at its peak in 2016 their force was short over 2000 pilots which prompted a series of steps to group pilot retention and push more trained evaders through the air education and training command bases this force the pieces to get creative and how to rapidly increase the number of trainees without a boost in funding. The 71st flying training wing had to ramp up production from 325 new pilots last year to 400 pounds this year then go to 425 pilots in 2020 and they had to do this with the same airspace and the same number of instructors and the same number of aircraft to accomplish that wing commander Colonel corps some and said that they were trying new ways of funneling data to airman faster as well as changing how they practiced flying the 1st thing they did was look at their own program and make sure they had everything in place to create as many sorties and many instructor opportunities as possible all the pilot training bases also review their syllabus and removed as many redundancies as possible and let the pilots accelerate their training process if they prove capable for example pilots may not need to complete all 11 test flights receive their wings if they show proficiency earlier but the quality of the training had to remain the same in fact all the standards are still the same to allow a pilot to walk across a graduation line. The other thing they did was use squadron innovation funds and authorities from the Air Force to find new ways to present information to the trainees now each student pilot gets an i Pad 2 access video recorder courses as well as simulations that walk through flight checklists given the pilot lessons earlier and turn into smaller simulations offer students greater understanding before they reach full scale simulators and actual aircraft their force also implement a desktop computer in virtual reality simulations multiple rooms at the training base of dozens of P.C.'s n.p.r. Headsets so pilots can come in and practice flying available systems that let people go through the basic flight motions include the h t c vive headsets throttles and control sticks and Google Earth based software that shows the area around where they do their practice flights all the Pilot Training relied on the Read it in regurgitated method but a new emphasis on tablets and v.r. Let the pilot touch it and do it to the point where they may not need as much time in a simulator or even an aircraft to vet their knowledge you know as a pilot myself I'm glad to hear that the military is adopting a lot of the great civilian training resources that are available for example I've had an i Pad in the cockpit for over 10 years and it was one of my primary sources for flight training of course I wasn't trying to learn to fly an f. 35 either preferred to freedom I'm Chief or officer on x.p. Troops Welcome back to our nation's largest military veteran talk radio show frontlines of freedom I'm Marine vets get Korea folks please do send us your comments and questions e-mail us to frontlines of freedom dot com It's an honor to welcome back to the show Judy Isaacson Ilyse Judy is the founder of the wonderful nonprofit heroes to heroes they take our combat veterans with p.t.s.d. Or moral injury to Israel for healing and it really works the colonel knows this firsthand because he went on one of their trips a few years ago Welcome back to front lines of freedom Judy. Thank you so much it's great to be here now Judy as I recall the the story the founding of heroes the heroes sort of began when you took a trip to Walter Reed Hospital in d.c. And you took a trip to Israel and sat next to just the right person tell us that story Ok My father was a World War 2 that and he never really came home and I troubled as a teen and my parents sent me on a trip to Israel and I was 16 years old and it changed my like Wow So fast forward December 2009 and I'm invited to Walter Reed Army Medical Center when it was and d.c. And I meet our soldiers and I just I was taken and as an American I was horrified and didn't understand why our soldiers didn't want to come home I also saw a lot of fear and I knew as a mother and as an American I had to do something and I started volunteering with veterans' organizations and I kind of liked what I saw for some but there was much I did not like you know was in the early days and people were just doing whatever turns them on but weren't really looking at what it is the veterans need it and I started hearing about the horrific suicide rates and I said I can't live with as an American I cannot live with us so I started looking in to suicide. Why would people do that what are the things that drive people to suicide and what kept popping up is fate and this is before I ran into anything called Marla injuries and all of the research I looked that there was a little postscript and it said you know people in the community of faith seem to do better and this struck me and back when I was 16 and I was going to my own crisis and went to Israel and put my hand on the wall and it changed my life and I thought about it what could I do to help them the next thing I know I'm on a plane to Israel to visit my son's who was doing a one year internship kind of program there and the gentleman on the plane next to me was an Israeli veteran. And like most of them are and I said you know I asked him what do you do with wounded veterans how do you bring them back into society and he started telling me about all these programs and you have to call this person you have to call that person the next thing I know I'm getting off the plane and I'm calling people Wow So it sounds like you are guided may be divinely I believe I was and I just saw what is I brought American veterans who are struggling to Israel and they got to connect with their faith ever faith that is. The to go and experience to their Christian to walk through Jesus walked if they're Jewish to walk where Aber have walked and if they're Muslim they get to go to the Temple Mount and experience in faith where it all began Yeah and I said would this touch them would they be able to come back to life in an unashamed matter and the next thing you know I knew on September 11th 2011 I was on a plane with a team of can a veterans well since then we are now on our 26 team traveling to Israel we have sent 277 veterans today we're now have 12 veterans for team we're sending 6 teams total this year. And the program is so successful that it's being studied by a team of moral injury specialists at the University of South Alabama that are doing a long term study there studying $100.00 of our veterans as they go through the program and for 2 years after and we're looking at this research being somewhat of a game changer notifier you know I'm not confident people's doors that we need to look at faith and we need to look at finding ways to help our veterans find forgiveness which is something that isn't spoken about you just find that so they can truly come home yeah we send people to war people think war I don't know if they think it's a videogame but war is about kill or be killed there's nothing pretty There's nothing flowery there's no rose colored glasses that you can really put on war so how when you're asking people to go to exile in the where they need to either kill or be killed how do you bring them home how do you allow them to find a safe place to come home and to forgive himself the job they were asked to do when it's not part of our culture to do what they're doing absolutely been so even though it's absolutely Ok to do what they're doing and they have to do it as much as we may hate it and they may hate it we have to find a way where they can find that trick given us and that piece and that put heroes to Heroes is doing this in Marine vets decore Ellen friends of freedom we're talking about heroes the heroes with Judy Elias Now Judy I understand that you occasionally take female vets on and all of the female team is that right yes we take one female t.v. Here and people say well why only one when taking 6 and got ideally God willing we'll be taking 8 next year comes increase our funding to do that we do take. One team of females many of the referrals we get and we get referrals from therapists from clergy from family members is you know about 'd 'd 85 percent mouth so we do take one team of females per year our program is not geared to m.s.t. So we get a little concerned about that and I do want to put that out there this is not a really good healer of that because the focus is on a different it's really on a different kind of moral injury so I do not put out there that we are an m.s.g. Program because we are not but we do work with a female team new year and we're seeing more and more moral injury our female veterans as well and some of the stories are pretty horrific Yeah you know unfortunately. We have to be in business for a long time oh yeah yeah for sure the world is not slowing down when it comes to the violence and war so you know Judy you're really doing the lord's work here and you're doing a fantastic job the colonel has nothing but awesome things to say about you and heroes to heroes now Judy I understand that in the next segment we'll be speaking with someone who has been through this program is that correct yes. Harrison has been through this program he was on Team number 2 which is back in 2012 and he'll tell you his story and he is now working for us so he helps with our team management he helps train coaches he helps make sure we have you know on a veterans go through our application process in the proper manner and he does preening and also trying when needed Does off and we have about 600 applications and that's what keeps me up at night and we have to do we do triage and Harrison does a lot of that work for us Judy that is awesome Judy before you go can you tell us how people can find out more about heroes to heroes their Web site Facebook anything like that yes the it's book is heroes to Heroes Foundation you have to put the foundation and to find us on Facebook our website is heroes to Heroes dot org That's h e r o e f t h e r e e dot org And there's an online application. Please if you know anyone who needs this program please refer them to us and we can have coaches reach out to them if they are not ready to make the phone call or a. Crucial that we get to people before it's too late that's awesome Judy we are out of time for this segment on frontlines of freedom but we want to thank you very much for giving us an update and telling us all about heroes to here was thank you for being on frontlines of freedom thank you so much. This is. Frontlines of freedom troops it's pushed up time I'm going to do $103.00 pushups so many of the Colonel does every day at least that's what he tells me then we'll take a break but stay in the area. This is Marine best kept Korea and this is the final formation for this hour on frontlines of freedom we're continuing to talk about heroes the heroes but instead of Judy Isaacson Ilyse we have a special man on the phone here his name is Harrison Mann Yoma Harrison welcome to front lines of freedom the thank you so very much if for having me on it's truly a blessing and an honor to be on Hail to the you know the honor is all on this side of the microphone Harrison Harrison for our I believe the ship 1st time on frontlines of freedom can you give the listeners a little background on who exactly is Harrison Manuma Well Harrison Manuma is a u.s. Army veteran currently in Houston Texas who served in the u.s. Army for 8 years before I was hurt in Iraq in 2004 during Operation Enduring Freedom went through some hard times but you know with the blessing of the heroes the heroes and God and others that are in my network in my personal life I'm able to speak about my experiences and live a healthy life or a healthier life and be able to be on the phone with you how well Harrison thank you very much for your service to our country. Can you briefly tell us what happened in 2004 that made it so that you needed the services of heroes the heroes . In 2004 were stationed in Iraq of course going through our deployment and to be honest with you there were some things that were going on right for us as a military servicemen meaning that we had a lot of guys getting killed almost daily injured almost daily and it was a. Time that we were going to t.t.p. Which is traffic control points were just to replace a couple of guys that we had out there for 24 hours but on this particular night actually July 2nd 2004 we were getting ready to leave the fog but I remember letting my lieutenant know that we weren't able to leave the fog without 3 vehicles and in Iraq the only way to move throughout Colonel which at the time was one of the deadliest routes in Iraq we only had 2 vehicles and he told me that we need to go because we're running late but as a sergeant I was telling my lieutenant that we can't go because of the fact that they're watching us we have to have to Bradley's and our Humvee and he pulls a gun puts it to my head and tells me. I have to do what he says If not it's mutiny and I remember watching The Hunt For Red October and so I remember what Meet me means and he said that I can kill you or disobeying a lawful order and so at that moment I thought about my soldiers my life my even my wife and my kids at the time and so I said Ok but if something happens I'm going to something that I'm going to regret so we take off and no life I'm not going to sit here lie to you 20 minutes into the to the t.c.p. Point the Bradleys gone it does turbo on the highway we run amok the Humvee the lights in the village go out I remember vehicles stalling us it was hazy I look over to my right side I notice vehicles a stop coming from the northbound side we're going southbound and I tell my guys hey keep your eyes peeled and about 9 o 2 pm I remember the time I look over to my right side and I notice that there's a vehicle sitting in just in plain sight right hand side about 50 feet from where we're going I tell my driver to get in the middle of the highway and I look back over and I say Oh Lord no and as soon as I did that I see a red flash come from the right side so I threw my right hand up over. My face and I remember I don't know how long I was out I just remember seeing my entire life lesson in front of me and waking up I don't know how long it was because I thought I was dead but waking up to burn skin just horrific sight but. All my soldiers were hurt it was just a bad time really what it really wasn't just get absolutely a says Marine vet skip Cornell we're speaking with Harrison Mann Yoma on front lines of freedom boy Harrison I think that's a that's incredible story just incredible story you know you were a sergeant I was a sergeant you know that the justice part of me the enlisted part of me just wants to go and kick that lieutenants ass but I can't say that on the radio so. Can you fast for what happened to that Lieutenant I have to know whether or not there was any justice done you know to be honest with you there was a letter of reprimand which to me is just a slap on the wrist and he was sent to another unit but years later I found him on Facebook and I just sent him a message and told him that I forgive you for everything that happened pray that you're well in your family well because I knew he was in a way good place Yeah but that forgiveness was for me so that I could break from that that darkness I was in because I was just hating lying Yeah it was all because of a certain individual Yeah you know that's that's understandable so I can what was the extent of your your injuries that you had to overcome memory loss blurred vision right there journalist busted 3rd degree burns to right hand traumatic brain injury and just being able to know who I am again I lost the sense of love emotional responsibility it was truly you're mad because I didn't understand no one told me what p.t.s.d. Was and now he said what was the extent of my injuries also divorce losing my kids drugs alcohol abuse just losing everything else touching and just destroying everything the extent of my injuries Yeah well that's a lot of injury and not all injury is physical listen you know Harrison I've been through 2 divorces myself and I know that they're devastated because they impact every facet of your life from the time you wake up in the morning to time you go to bed so. Harrison How did you get through all of that you know I won a god surely because I'm Christian not believe in Jesus Christ but at the same time I was at my dinner table and I and I had a gun to my head on August 10th 2012 and it was just to the point where I just wanted in my life because everything was going through but I remember right before the pull the trigger I asked the Lord just one more time just if you are who you say your show me and I went to pull the trigger and my phone rang and Heroes Foundation Oh my gosh that's ratable I knew that there was a God I just didn't know where he was but he showed up and that's when I knew that I had to give whoever he rose to Heroes was a chance I didn't understand how or what are you know and so I remember calling them back and being in Newark New Jersey 15 days later completely still hurt I disrespected Judy livered life now but didn't and then I remember being in Israel and ended up in Israel where my complete transformation happens tell us about the transformation what happened in Israel that helped you heal and Israel I mean that the fact that I was well aware of what the Bible says about Israel being Christian but actually walking Israel was very. Standoffish with the heroes that I was with just been trust anyone but being able to walk where Jesus walking there was something that was happening to me I just didn't understand what it was but I didn't want anyone to know and on the 3rd day there we were at the Western Wall the Wailing Wall and I remember Judy telling me off the bus to be sincere about what I was going to be doing and putting into the Lall No that goes to God's feet and so forth I thought she was crazy but I get there and I notice there's so many people there there's chanting there's a lot of things going on and I get to the wall I go in Pray for 10 seconds I turn around there's this guy I look like the top where Black followed. And he the thing he asked me was that was I sincere and at that moment it was like Ok maybe I wasn't and so I turned back around to yell at him because remember I heard still just don't like people and he wasn't there everyone looked the same so I went back and the same prayer skip that I prayed when I pulled the trigger for up with the trigger was the same pressure I prayed at the wall and all of this and I feel a burning sensation from my right arm see my right arm was really mangled 3rd degree burns and I couldn't really use it maybe 60 percent of the use of my right arm and I always were pressured arm it would burn so hot that I had to take the pressure garment off and it went through my body from the top of my head to the soles of my feet and then for the 1st time in 10 years I was able to freely move my hand without pain Wow. That's incredible Harrison who knew that Jesus Christ looked like z.z. Top remember that for the rest of my life. Harrison you know that is just an incredible story and thank God that duty did come and you were hooked up with heroes the heroes we are out of time for this segment of the show Harrison but you know I just want to thank you for your service to our country for your sacrifice and stay in touch with frontlines of freedom Ok yes yes person just this concludes the 1st hour of the show will start the 2nd hour talking with law fares Brooke Goldstein about bias in our nation and how it hurts us then Dr Zuhdi Jasser the head of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy will join us of course will conclude with our weekly mailbag military history and our armed American report this reinvests get Korean frontlines of freedom troops it's time to run run a couple of miles of wind sprints and grab some protein rehydrate with water finally put on a big smile on your proud to be an American face and send me your thoughts by e-mail or on Facebook. That well we've been talking about your local paper in the 1st of the program today one of my early jobs was actually working on our local papers in west London. To work on the ad features department side sell the spice and then the writing team would write something about a local business I don't know where they still do those on pipe as it was quite a hard sell at the time. Quite a long time ago so I'm not sure if they still do that. And it was fun I love I love working those great job loved it but answering crawly about how local paper and Vanessa set up in my local papers many times I've helped me to change many local problems between me. He and a local reporter we saved a lot of people's lives by informing them to change their dangerous gas heating systems they also help me to get a new bus for Crawley patients travelling to east sorry hospital who will care if and when local papers go search for Nessa. And this message from Kingfisher drew on Twitter says up in buying the Brighton Argus almost every weekday since 1983 when I started my 1st job it was something to reach you in the lunch break but if they were to stop printing it tomorrow I wouldn't miss it there are plenty of ways these days to get local news for local people says Kingfisher so interested to hear from you on this 11333 Start your tech for the word radio also give me a call if you've watched or caught up with the latest episode of Survivor that bruised new B.B.C. One Show Dynasty's and Sunday's episode features the story of Emperor penguins living in bitterly cold conditions of minus 76 degrees Celsius I've not seen myself yet but it has provoked some controversy after the film crew dark and escape ramp to help a group of birds and the young who become trapped in a deadly blizzard if they hadn't done anything it would have meant certain death but should they have intervened that's when the talking points from the program here's well Lawson who is part of the crew in Antarctica and he takes up the story we've given it a lot of thought and we've decided that we are different in a bigger shell around that they will hopefully use. It for Libya for the film crew to intervene but they realize that they may be able to save at least some of these birds simply by digging a few steps in the ice. Will look. Like. We were literally just about to leave the 1st birds and definitely making their way out as it is really so people just make their way back to the colony and them and their chicks still have a much better chance of survival because it's no chance they're going to survive down there and. I want to be in bits when I watch this later on so I might Gunton the show's executive producer says every situation is different on this occasion it was the logical and humane thing to do the reason why you in 99.9 times. 100 you wouldn't intervene it's because usually there's absolutely no choice there's nothing you can do but with the pain with it was so so totally different because there was no dynamic there that was going on you know there's no animal is going to suffer by intervening is dangerous you are touching animals and it was just. By doing this you're actually allowing the opportunity because I say the animals might have just said well you take these steps we're still going to stay here but they had the opportunity to not have to keep stripping down the slope and they could survive and that means another 50 penguin surviving to the next generation and you know these animals are the ones that we you know we need to conserve them from the perspective David switch as the weather yesterday and he said he was on the same 2 so I think I think it's pretty unanimous from our perspective if it's OK with Dave he's surely OK with the rest of us anyway Earlier I spoke to Rod Downie who's the chief polar advisor at the World Wildlife Fund in wild Kings How did he see the program and what did he think had any yes I did see it in days and it was absolutely astonishing and really beautiful photography and wonderfully narrated by W. Yes. SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH So if those haven't seen it yet what's what we see in the program what we learn from this episode. Well this is about the the life history of Emperor penguins and just how they survive in one of the most remote and harsh and inhospitable places on our planet but also about the threats that they could be facing in the future due to climate change and I'm gathering that I'm guessing here that actually the group mentality they survive as a group rather than individuals whereas in the previous week's ones with the chimpanzees day who appeared to be in charge of the chimpanzee family was quite a solitary figure at times is that correct observational Yeah that's correct there they are perfectly adapted to survive in this really harsh conditions and one of their survival strategies is to huddle so they all come together as a group to keep warm in these incredible storms that whip up off the Antarctic continent and lie for them how how tough is it then to survive in those conditions well life is tough but as I say they are perfectly adapted to survive here so I mean they routinely they're facing temperatures of minus 50 degrees Centigrade 200 kilometer an hour winds but they have 2 layers of feathers they have a good layer of fat that keeps them warm and they also have proportionally small beaks and flippers. And in fact even there they have feathers down their legs even to keep their ankles warm so they're perfectly adapted for these conditions whereas we are not and I assume in your role as chief polar off buys into the W W F You've been in those conditions What's it like for a human. Yeah that's right Danny I've been very lucky to have had 15 field seasons down in the Antarctic of spent about 2 and a half years down there but of course you always have the right gear you know you've always got the correct clothing lots of layers. But yes it is a remarkable experience to spend time down there it's one of our most beautiful wilderness regions on earth is it kind of bleakness in the kind of never ending list of the harsh cold what is it the kind of the impression you leave it with I guess more than anything it's the other worldliness of Antarctica that really really hits you it's just an astonishingly beautiful wilderness and virtually untouched but but facing some real real challenges and real threats in the future including climate change right so same planet different world I get what you're saying right so what are the threats to that region and those penguins you know with the the greatest threat is as I say is climate change so we're seeing increasingly warming ocean temperatures and emperor penguins depend upon sea ice they've they've evolved over thousands of years to live on and around and under new sea ice but as the temperatures warm it's predicted that more and more Antarctic sea ice will be lost and the Emperor's need that sea ice to breed on they use as a platform to breed from and as it decreases would I suppose their space to live in gets squeezed What about the change in temperature for them does that matter to them. Yeah absolutely and it's more it's more about the loss of sea ice that's that's the greatest risk to them we are seeing some emperor penguin colonies that are not naturally adapting to climate change and actually moving up on to ice shelves rather than sea ice which is slightly more robust to climate change but nevertheless you know this really emphasizes the need to tackle climate change global it because these are problems that are not created in Antartica these are problems that are created right across the world so that's why we need to act now to tackle climate change so how do you feel when you hear people talking about climate change being some fictional imagination or perhaps even a natural cycle of the planet you probably see more evidence there do you do you believe it yeah I think it's absolutely unequivocal and it's you know the vast majority of scientists will tell you that climate change is real it's rapid and it's happening now and perhaps nowhere is that more clearly seen than in our polar regions so you know for example in April 28th seen levels of carbon dioxide reached the highest that we've seen in at least 800000 years and we know this with absolute certainty because of ice cores that we retrieve from Antarctica writes They're telling us a picture of what's going on in the past I suppose turning it around is a huge challenge any thoughts on how we do that. Yes we have a roadmap ahead of us with the Paris agreement so the there are many. Many ways that we need to react to climate change and to respond to climate change so as individuals we know we need to acknowledge the impact of our choices and we need to use our voices as citizens and as consumers to demand that business and political leaders take action to protect our environment do you think it will be that push would be push from the bottom upwards from us may calling for the changes rather than at the top saying well this is a very good idea for us as a country and as a planet this is what we're going to do I think it needs to come from both sides and so for governments Well it W W F We're calling on governments to commit to a new global deal for nature and people and also to ensure that they're backing that with real targets and plans of action at home so you know the U.K. Can be a real global force for change here but to do that we need to absolute sure that we have strong laws to protect nature here at home and also as far away as it is as the Antarctic and we're also working with the U.K. Government and the science community to develop large networks of marine protected areas surrounding the Antarctic continent back to the emperor penguins finally Rod tell us about the sequence where the crew intervene tell us what happened and whether you think that was OK or not I think that's been a bit controversial about this episode isn't it. Yes Well so what happened so. A number of the film crews chose to dig some small steps out of a ravine that the emperor penguins and their chicks were stuck in. So that was an indirect action but the truth is that ravines and gulleys they're not a major threats to emperor penguins of the population level you know what we know is that the real threat is climate change and warming oceans and the predicted loss of sea ice and so that's the real challenge that we need to overcome right so the fact that they intervened at that time to help that small group you know the next time that happens to a small group of Emperor penguins a film crew won't be there and so I guess the thought is that they would perish in that so but that's kind of nature is it that's the way it goes sometimes it's a harsh place to be and Antarctica is a very harsh place they did help those penguin chicks to survive but as you say the real challenge is that Emperor penguins are facing a climate change related so you sound like you're quite relaxed about the fact that they did do that thing at that time and intervened for that particular group but actually that's a kind of small action when they're facing much bigger threats Well generally the role of film crews is to observe and to film but as I say the real the real threat is not the order of 18 or the gully that are found in Antarctica is a perfectly natural phenomena are the real threat is climate change or what I do what I do. Suppose we could all ask ourselves that question being being a little bit removed from it I think you'd have to be pretty hard hearted to see an animal really struggling in a circumstance like that and think well perhaps I will help out and I know they're not supposed to probably but actually are there hard and fast rules you've got to deal with what's presented to you haven't you. Yeah I mean there are there are no hard and fast rules but as I say you know in terms of a population level for penguins you know the best thing that we can do is tackle climate change and there's many things that we need to do to achieve that as wrote down a chief advisor. In Woking speaking to me since that conversation might have my mind out of the something because I find that sounds like I didn't touch than it was just providing some steps and then it was up to the Penguins to go up it so I'm happy I would do that I What would you do did you see the show what are we learning from the series so far down the Champs scene the Penguins what you liking about it and he questions about the series to get in touch cool B.B.C. Separate. 58746. In my lunch hour reporter Simon Jenkins with some local penguins penguins are local to us not in the Antarctic. Simon is 2nd off the Carole King. As. It stick. so we've we've made we've we've we've we've you know v phone meet you are we just cancel job chip we use and the at our Carole King. Some local Penguins I mentioned before Simon Jenkins Where were you. You know how a journey through service this morning it's a bit of a grey old day it's not really the day for a dip world certainly not if you're a human if you're a penguin Well that's a different matter because they're around about 9 of the individual swimming around quite happily and in fact one of them who sort of taking the lead is called miracle he's a Humboldt penguin more about that in a minute to send zookeeper here responsible for him and the others he doesn't look at what he's suffering from right off righteous penguins get after ISIS Yeah they do he's got a little bit of a limb but he as you can see he's perfectly swimming around the pool and they really haven't stopped moving in the last few minutes I've been here they are slightly different it must be said from the emperor penguins they look like penguins they look a little bit like white as they've got a lovely beaks and the flippers but size difference a little smaller and yeah they're one of the smaller penguins species that there are and they're not going the smallest but yet as I said they are one of the smaller species but they are stop them know exactly and what would one of these 8 so you're on a daily basis I mean obviously if it's in the wild have to catch itself but I mean what would they on a daily basis what do you have to give them so here is the part we think them on sprouts which is a small fish part of the herring family family and they get 15 of these a day so they can eat up to 30 a day each feeding session and over a course of a year that's $11000.00 fish so you know we go through a little while and Danny I've got to tell you we're standing up on like a rock balcony and behind us a couple of just come out of their cave and they're wondering what are we doing Tell us about the environment they have here because we watch the emperor penguins and we think gosh that's a place to live I mean here so a bit like a penguin paradise isn't it yes they're going nice big pool for them to swim in and they've also got a beach and on that beach they've got 6 nest boxes which they can all enjoy some time away. And sleep and snuggle up with their partners and might for life yes they do they are very romantic so the names will pick a pebble from the beach and he will take it to that female and if she likes it they will be as such if not he will they try again Oh he will offer it to another penguin come on your want to meet up and I did this couple him. Gustus picks up all the leaves and how to present them to Slate and they will be filled in the nest boxes of leaves and. Well I must admit I didn't imagine that romance in the penguin Well Danny I have to say is cold out here today in Sussex but it's it's really heating up in the poll Drusilla's some pictures out of these lovely old birds as well and they're so I'm looking at me thinking who is that idea . What they really thing is has he got any fish for us come on hand it on I have a son alright we'll look for those pictures on the Twitter with so much bad news around that's a nice thing to hear Andy the truck a Hello Andy Oh I don't say hi there have you watched the dentist is on Penguin jet now you know yeah I like my my. You know it was the 1st one last well. And yeah I'm looking forward ready to say and especially. And on the thought of whether the crew should intervene in cut those steps into the ice the escape ramp should they have done that or not what what do you think. Of I would have done exactly the saying oh good enough wouldn't hesitate to think. What would we find penguin so charming do you think. I think it's a little it's a little one. Of many things plates of. The thing and I was already tearing with my wife but. I looked ruining the reputation of tough truckers across the country right now I'm not a more I think that's all right I was I was I was nearly a white Joe in that clip I was talking about Blimey. I mean on the side of any animal. I wouldn't hesitate to stop and help an injured animal on the road and I would do it many a times been a trucker I think it's I think with the kind of making the wildlife films if you kind of intervene and stopping one animal having another animal for it's dinner that would be different wouldn't it because that's that's how they get their dinner . Right I mean when you say they the Lions chasing down try on one hand I want the pride again why but on the other on a line Predikant. You know it's it's about balance OK Andy thanks yeah have a good day enjoy the show tonight and he's a trucker there right so Dave that IMBRA the self and the whole siding on the it's OK to help the Penguins build their little ramp Let's see won't listen Shoreham says Hello Liz. Yeah catch the OK. I think it was outside I have what it was absolutely beautiful and when you actually saw the guys who did they were about to be and then you saw the Penguins getting up around. And they had teased in their eyes it was trying to tell us it was just no stay read enough today and how could you possibly criticised in the spring to the Ninja saving the lives of all those magnificent babies. Yeah I kind of feel that way as well and I know there's probably an echo issue here but you know frankly I don't care I think if you're there if you're there on the ground and listen you don't go to those places where it's minus 60 minus 70 degrees for a laugh you're there because you're trying to do something pretty serious to enlighten us about the world where you and I will never go live right not you know me and he they might I may say we're not going down there so they're not mucking about so every decision you take down there when you're in that extreme environment is a serious one so they didn't do it flippantly by the sound of it so it was totally the right decision and it was it was actually on the other side if they had not say those pay cleans I think on my AT then really upset it would ruin my night what should not it was just so great to see it happen right now to watch it because when you see the most scrambling up. Yes it's a little it's a little moment is it arc a good day I suppose you know listen the next day another group of paying Gwyn's might fallen down that ravine and either died you know that's that's the harsh reality of where they live well the skies were meant to be there yet. What about that they had to take and then the 1st place they fall in with a blown in and I think I can remember and they just suddenly came on that part when they were all trapped you know only you know and they were babies and one mother went up she say to self and her little baby tried to follow and fell back in and die and one mother out she managed to climb up she was growing on the wrist and will just tell them the you know really you know I have to be in the right frame of mind to see this I can't you know I have to prepare myself for this list thank you very much. Leanna back here with the latest and securing traffic on the A $22.00 at Southport So what's happening yes it's looking particularly busy at both directions on the Station Road I believe is in the roadworks area so they got temporary lights in operation at like a road and of course that has seemed to slow things down a little along Guilford as well the Millbrook and Shalford road heading into. Town is looking just before that one why 6 steps unfortunately in pole gate the road westbound is still closed because of this fuel spillage that happened when the vehicle broke down and the stretch of the road that is closest is from Station Road to call Paul roundabout in Chichester the. Both directions is looking slow with patches from the Fishbone roundabout to the poor old roundabout and in Worthing as well the 27 eastbound also looking a little sluggish at the moment the for the off into the corner and. Around about all the trains a couple. Of the services is still suspended on something between husband and because of damage to the track and we're seeing delays of up to 15 minutes on something like Express and Thameslink between Victoria and Gatwick. Badly at the B.B.C. . With your travel updates 080-5871 arm forsakes. Travel do you trust the head of our community Heroes awards which are coming up next Monday night's meeting some of the finalists this year this is quite an accolade to hold isn't it and hasn't been gifted this title he's done loads of great things to get it Ken Griffey will hear from a couple of minutes he's known as Mr. Who wouldn't like that title was. A couple of seconds 1st of all his Duran Duran. Yet we're about paying tribute to the people in our towns and villages that. Like Griffiths who give so much of his time to the haze from a community organizer is an annual event. And she has the organization at the Hague festival when the time. Lost its main post office can manage to raise 15000 pounds to fund a not for profit facility Simon Ferber caught up with Mr Hazel me at the town's museum. Museum a very humble guy you believe and now actually hear them on the raw face and here we are in the grounds of museum and we're actually restoring them to what they once were no George and I. Well for my sins I seem to volunteer for one or 2 projects that take place and. You know it's like you put your hand up once and they come back again find it difficult to say the word know somehow and so they keep coming back and say look this is a good idea should we do this OK I think yes we ought to explore that opportunity and we actually carry them out and here in Hasan we're very fortunate because a lot of organizations a lot of individuals a lot of groups do an awful lot of things and we rely entirely on volunteers I am just one of many. Perhaps the main thing we've done this year because it's a send tenor of the end of the Great War So commemorative that we've got a cascade of poppies and the $12000.00 copies made by local schoolchildren cascading down the towers and Christmas church one of our local churches but on top of that church and it was 100 years old was an old flagpole which had become completely rotten and had to be taken down so a part of the commemorating onward and hopefully this will last another 100 years we replace the old flagpole with a new one now this is quite a feat it's a $35.00 foot tall wooden flagpole 14 inches square the base and it looks spectacular and on top of that we've restored an arts and crafts crafts now stands proudly over high using it because you can see that iconic sort of a flagpole for most prices and I was in it so that's what the latest thing we've actually been doing. It is inspiring to all of this show the why and then involved Will Cain I think for me is on. His and others and he's always the up front he's the devil for gauging people and job to say no to him he was instrumental in arranging going to post office when the my post office was being closed this. Is an extremely hard work on these projects at the music. Shows it's really the way to go I've known care I've been working in museum now as a volunteer for the last 4 or 5 years and since Ken joined us couple of years ago I was I'm so much more inspiration to all of us his driving motivation is quite incredible and without him I don't think we would have done in the near as much as we have done it's a community spirit it's the people it's how the town is a wonderful town I've been here about 38 years so I've only got another couple years before I'm accepted as a as a resident but now it's a wonderful town and we all pull together and we want to support the town we want to support the people who live in the town and the surrounding villages I mean that's important. Can Griffis their shortlisted in the volunteer Ward category along with Christine moon from seafood and the Purple People kitchen in Brighton all are winners announced at a ceremony next Monday night and will meet another of our community heroes from the 999 award category just after 1230 this lunchtime when Captain Frank says we change scan and unless we make a what is the noise that gets on your absolute could be. The crunch of an apple this is the thing that upsets some people there's a great article fascinating on the B.B.C. News website the sound I can't bear says by people making a hard crease in a sheet of paper with their fingernails. That is part of the sound effects of the. B.B.C. Summary. I don't like to sway and. So stop. Spreading the word as. They ago that. You play games. I've got to look out for me. Who's shed based radio station as only you have been heard by his wife is getting a new audience after 44 years this guy Dick Duncan started playing pop records from his back garden in Stephen age in 1970 S. But with no license the station Carney beamed through a speaker in his living room to his wife to raise or now his story was originally featured on the B.B.C.'s nationwide remember that program it was like the one show from the seventy's Here's a clip from back in 19 so. And see for Have a listen to this this is Duncan Gun Bill Crystal Steve is doing her housework to the music of her favorite radio station like no she's too new to her favorite D.J. Into trying to integrate them around your children especially Hello how are you going on right now to mysteries of Duncan 57 going to present Steven it's going to leave feeling like I think it's 940 on the 77th place of the old. I'm going to the shops try to take. Radio 77 it's rating it's no good being for a bad more stations entire audience has decided to go down the shops. Well the interest in radio came from the pirates radio Cal and London and when that was brutally taken from us I start to do something because the government didn't replace it in the right way for me so I replaced it for myself with this my ultimate understand would be to broadcast this to the rest statement just a couple notes about that 1st of all it was her housework Did you notice that she was doing and you know the presenter of that piece just joining in the fun wasn't he was loving it voiceover on that but now the Duncan is finally fulfilling his lifelong dream he's been given his own one hour show on his local B.B.C. Station deep found out the good news live on there were presenter Justin Dealey I've been to the bosses here maybe 6 for a cancer radio and I made a proposal to them and they have accepted Listen to this his Laura most of the station editor at 3 counties radio and we've been following your story with great interest here and I notice that you said in the original film that went out on nationwide that your dream with to have your very own show and broadcast to the whole of Stephen H. We think we can go one better than that and not only will be likely to broadcast to Steven age how does the whole of big Tarzan park sound on. And to walk the you a one hour special over Christmas on 3 counties radio Happy Christmas Day Take well after 44 years your dream is going to be a reality. You've been passed the tissues. How does it feel free it was really no use your own I'm actually on 1st time in my life from speechless. Wow I say we get over that in time for Christmas that's big Duncan So he's got a one hour special on 3 counties radio over Christmas broadcasting to Stephen age and beyond I guess you'll be out here as well on the B.B.C. Sounds up the whole reason they invented that new app for all our radio and podcasts and music just so you can hear Deek over Christmas they've got a nice story isn't it. With it. Hi that brilliant as the fantastic as a couple of things 1st of all believed by writein citing the Penguins because the penguins the predicament they are in a co-sponsor and man can help them because of the particular belief coursed them to be in then all good the other thing is you W W S man said that 50 Penguins was an insignificant number and you know that I just happen to fall in with things anyone thought of sort of on the back of a fact check a calculation and I have one cheek a year giving 50 percent attrition about poor quality is that 50 could multiply up to a 1000 will penguins. So yeah OK So over the of the course of time you know be quiet. Be great attrition. Even allowing attrition you know having the chicks. That shift you could turn into a pail so saving them was OK on that occasion and I mean and he was more worried about the kind of erosion of and Antarctica where the reduction in the ice there yes but he did say they were starting to adapt to the our show itself and I can I mean I'm not sure how they get up or not on you know up and down or much but you know if I can move onto the our shelf you know I should think they would be OK So that's all right so that so far I've not heard anybody say to me that they shouldn't have built the ramp for the penguins to escape from that ravine and I think I mean come on that's fair enough when they're living in minus 76 Celsius or whatever it was just brutal. I just want to do that to repeat it thanks a lot nicer speeches a pizza any spawn there so thoughts come 1333 in the text start your message with the word Radio 4 to get involved on that little bit later on the program today with me talking about. Whether you can see the sea from where you live and I want to hear from you if that's you so whether you've got a glimpse of the sea from your house or flat or whether your just across the road from the sea or if your back door opens up on to the beach I really want to hear from you today 81333 Start your message with the word radio or give me a call because essentially. It was a lovely place to live in the summer if you had a sea view from your house what a place what a view of the summer you had so later on I'll be talking to Michelle actually present a fantasy homes by the sea which has just started a new series on the really channel on telly from that for the T.V. Channel anyway it's called really and it's called fancy homes by the siege and of course the series they'll be in Hastings pixel centers New Haven little hands on a more and elsewhere on the coast but I do have a question about do we really is this a good thing to do just say to the whole country hey by the way the place to go and live is by the seaside because I suppose the upshot of that is you might have people coming from far and wide to live by the state seaside changing the nature of our seaside towns but isn't that the way it's always been anyway and you can't stop people from the country isn't it anyway will talk to me show up at that point well a bit later on but if you live near the sea Tell me what it's like for you. With music information for sailing on F.M. Online and on the A.B.C. Digital radio B.B.C. Sun. Hi I'm Deborah Jenkins Tessie artistic director and conductor of the Colorado Springs corral and I'm Peter top executive director of the Colorado Springs corral and you are listening to k.c. M.j. LP 93.9 megahertz Colorado Springs. This is Casey in jail p.f. And 93.9 Colorado Springs You're listening to the john thunder hard our background music is known as Monk Rock Me Today we have a return guest this is Chris from future ghost Good afternoon glad you made it down here today today thanks for having me back yeah most definitely here know everything anytime you start having more exploits I want you back on the show. Yeah James apologizes for not being here he goes to school at u.c.c. Yes they're actually doing a public investigation there at their main hall where you know they step out tuberculosis hospital there so you actually want to go right for registration this semester one of the people is telling you about all the different things that happen they are so funny you mention that funny you mention that because I have 2 people who've been coming to some of my events who are students at u.c. C.s. And they come to my last 2 meditations and they have phenomena going on in their room all the time they the kitchen area that they have they would you know have the towels folded out and the towels would be taken and put on the ship or not they put them on shelves underneath the sink and they would always come out in their folded and they're laying up on top of the counter and I have a lot of things that are going on here he said it's all benign but they have a lot of activity yeah that they you know shank it paranormal Alliance for investigators and mediums they'll be doing a public investigation I think it's actually the 1st official of the Augusta geisha of this site I should think that would be Saturday October 27th so he'll be with us on the 26th but we'll talk about that again later wow yeah that that that's really fascinating how you bring that up you C.C.'s and the. Doing an investigation and to people who are you know coming to me house last night actually told me about the haunted stuff and he really wanted it. Because 3 or 4 years ago and I was auditioning for a part in a Disney movie it was the lone ranger I didn't get the part which is fine because that movie kind of bombed but they were looking for like authentic looking Native Americans say right here pretty authentic looking Chris good. Most people just look at me very quizzically all the time you know I don't know if I'm more agent or Hispanic or they just I've got not always when you're 100 percent pure blood yeah go to Pine Ridge they all look like me you know they're all related. You know but you know even though this is not on topic it's very interesting that you see the different tribes yeah that the looks are very much different Yeah I'm actually the lightest one of my family everyone else is a lot darker than I am I guess I'm more like all of maybe right but yeah you know and you know genetics throws some weird things and you know they're the I mean the structures in the bone shapes like with the Navajo Yes And you know compared to say the Sioux they thought they looked different Yeah we were pretty good at telling a different you know they're different nations right I'm not you know. I just know there's a difference but I don't know which you know tribe you know all my family it's so involved you know why my cousin is Billy Mills You know one of the 1st 1st Native American to ever win a medal so he did the there was a movie based on his story which was running brave I believe Robby Benson played him but just a lot of people also my and my cousin. He's he's a member of the Stronghold society and what they do is they build skate parks on reservations and just you know help get these kids behind. Creative events. You know something I remember when we lived there there just there wasn't a lot to do if there was a concert kind of everybody went to that concert even if they didn't necessarily in music it was just something to do it's very different now but or right yeah he was some the 1st Native Americans ever went to a gold medal he was a runner they built they did a movie on his life which was called Running brave where he was played by Robbie Benson So it's been a while since I've been back we used to go like maybe every other year but you know this like you've never seen Dances With Wolves you know that was a complete Native American Oglala Sioux cast which is our tribe you know obviously Custer just a lot of history you know there this day the dead will be the 2 year anniversary of my father's passing and when we had some elders come down for the native portion of the service that was just spoken and you know our language I just stayed up with him like all night the night before just listening to all of his stories he used to be a sheriff on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and just saw a number of very interesting things you know for them they don't use the word paranormal just my earliest memory is just you know this exposure to the concept of a spirit world so it's just something that we lived like hand in hand with with the spirit with The Divine So you know they've said they've had like a big foot sightings at Sundance is they don't call Bigfoot they're just there to become Sasquatch I wonder what the name for this thing is but they believe it's. A life form and you know we coexist with many different life forms and people but they believe it it's it's an underground dweller and every now and then it elucidates the entrance you know into that to the lower Earth and just wanders you know above ground for a while but still there's still comes to be some kind of like Superchunk natural bent to these things he'd seen a lot of lights in the sky you know just going on these back roads at night there's petroglyphs out there that kind of portray you know this like our relationship with . And it wasn't even like Star beings or star people they knew they were interdimensional you know life forms that memory come and go what with the pictures like these pet Have you seen these petroglyphs I've never seen those petroglyphs I know like some people my family have been there on Vision Quest it's really far out and it's really I guess kind of dangerous you know terrain and again so much has changed but I know we had pictures of different than my my uncle had taken pictures of you know some strange lights he'd seen you know the next day when he did his briefing those pictures were taken away you know he never saw him again so he saw several spirits you know all the time I was asked him a wild you know say you're driving on a road at night you know and you see someone off to the side of the road how do you know that's not just someone looking for a ride and he's like well they're luminous or you can you know you can see through you know through them right here but you don't really approach them you know if they have a special message for you you know you're allowed to interact with them but some of that is you know kind of harmful to humans so you want to stay away from that energy. Now now who was this at least this is my i'll go your uncle the one that you did all the recordings with Yes and now we see what brought that but that was over probably for hours we just sat and talked and talked stuff you've gone through it all when and we have we have it so I could listen to it for you know obviously because of my father's passing and there was just a lot of emotion behind it and then when I played it back the 1st time I could hear . You we were up at the stairs we could hear some of coming up the stairs and everyone was in bed except for me my uncle and and James right so that was really kind of unsettling but then it kind of made sense because we were talking about my father you know when that happened right so that's not really shared with anyone just because it's more personal but now. Would you be willing to do a show about your grandfather my uncle Iran my grandfather yeah my grandfather Sidney Byrd he passed away. Gosh it must have been. The day like she actually a month to the day after my father passed my grandfather also went and he was the one that gave me my Indian name my torch on tape which is their heart and Sue You know I had for years that I always you know fantasized about getting a cool name like Red Wing or Nightwing or something you're not allowed to choose your name right that's And you're not allowed to ask for it if that's on your path you know you get one but he had had a vision I was going to go out there really hard time in high school and I wasn't suicidal but I was almost at that point I don't think I'd be saying that it would have ever commit suicide but I just had so many pressures you know I was working almost full time I was in sports I was just trying to survive and I didn't know exactly you know like what came next I was just very different very different sort of person and. I think he knew because he's starting to have dreams about me and in our culture the dream time is where you get your visions premonitions all those things so he had a vision of this lake with this vortex and he saw one of the Indian feathers he had given to one of my uncles that took it to Vietnam survived the whole time he was out there protected him in Cardiff and this is like an eagle feather that had passed down from generation to generation and when he looked in the water he saw my my reflection in the water instead of his mind so he knew that was to go to me so we had the ceremony I got my Indian feather my Indian name and I got a journal which was to log my dream time so almost every night since 1901 it's been a responsibility to write you know in this journal even if it's something that seems you know not relevant to what I'm going through everything has a message symbolic or otherwise what makes a lot of sense makes a lot of sense yeah because I'd like for you to you know pass some of this knowledge on if you're willing to yeah some point we can sit down and record a show multiple shows Yeah we can impart 123 and what you've learned from it what you. What they wanted to to pass on to the world it's really important right now you know right now we have all these ancestry dot com It's are these little kids you can buy and find out if you have any Native American you know in your lineage but it's such a almost like a novelty merino it and it shouldn't be that it should be you know these teachings that my grandfather my uncle my you know even my father and I think that was the hardest thing during the ceremony working on kind of this this video with a slide show of his life and and I had taken these pictures to get developed I'd never seen when he was in Vietnam but just the fact that my dad you know his his brother my grandfather they're all forced into boarding schools and they were all forced into a Catholic system and they really were beaten if they were spread you know if they got caught speaking any Sue So just you know the preservation of that culture is just so important it's what that's what I feel when it's why I am asking you know having that invite if you'd like to share that and to pass that on you know because there may be so many people that haven't had the opportunity to know their background their history and and bring it back into light bring it back into this age and leaving it in the past and it is it's just you know right now we are so just the other day I am starting to forget passwords because there are so many passwords I have to remember every single day for anything I want to do you know what we have are her face is buried in so many screens you know throughout the day people are so hungry for Spirit for a deeper relationship with Spirit. It was really hard when I went to I went to the official Star Trek convention last month and it was so hard for me to connect and to feel grounded because there's no I can connect with any nature you know you have these little squares where maybe a palm tree is allowed to grow but and of course it was so hot you know we got there that 1st day it was like on our intent agrees. But just that connection with nature you know we're so busy just you know look at the roads you know anywhere we go any to. Time of day even if it's just the gas station how impatient you know people are you know they want to get there fast as they want to get there 1st we don't know how to slow down you know any more and connect most definitely I mean if you know all these pictures I'm seeing of these beautiful places and I love living in Colorado like Cripple Creek and you know that aspirins you know these these leaves changing and beautiful and for most of us that's all we'll see is just a picture we don't really get out there and explore you know right now and we can ourselves too busy with stuff that really doesn't make a difference yeah yeah so let's get back onto topic I'm glad we've gotten you know straight over and Mr reaction because you know this is some of the stuff that's been going on in your life and it's making up who you are and it actually in some ways influences when you doing this work yeah you know really you know just looking at it with a more esoteric bent and certainly after the death of my father and some of the things that happened some of the visitations that happened after his death just really maybe had us focus a little bit more on the afterlife our own mortality obviously it's something we see every season when are out in these really heavy paranormally active places but and it's not that we never really took it seriously before but just maybe steering more away from like the fear based stuff you know hallway has always been a traditionally kind of spooky but you know there's just so much out there already on social media and the news that is just so fear based and fear driven and it just leaves people in this state of paranoia right and powerlessness they don't think they can do anything about it you know where I work we have people coming in all the time looking to looking for tools to cleanse their house of negative energy of hauntings But you know they see these shows and I've been I've been on several and I'll be on some more this month but it just it just leaves you in a very paranoid space where I So what we really do is we really try to empower people that the 1st couple years me and James were involved as future ghost. To be spirit chasers that's all we did those 1st 2 years was going to house after house and smudge and smudge and smudge we spent so much money you know we never charge for services but but so now are more into empowering people how to do this to themselves right how to take more control of their environment yeah it's empowerment not enablement Yeah because there's still a lot of shows out there that you know obviously they're all just for entertainment purposes only people really have to understand that but there are some shows that they're not going to name of that are just so over the top and ridiculous and don't have anything to do with furthering this what we're doing in the paranormal field you know the work and that's why we change your brain we want to have future ghosts in there somewhere because suggesting that there's a future for the research that we do it's not just this side show attraction right which is what I'm glad you explained that because the thing is when you say future ghost I mean the makes you scratch your head yeah you know future goes we are all going to be future ghosts Yeah you know what I mean that type it's got a funny take on yeah it's a funny take but it makes you think well what I mean by that yeah but you know you giving the explanations every time you come on the show I want you to give that explanation of course now that must be my alarm going off for some reason I scream truck Yeah I'll tell you know yeah I have this new phone and I am still trying to figure it out and I must to hit finger when I'm swiping something set the alarm to go off and lease it's not an annoying one but it makes me want to have ice cream kind of reminds me of an ice cream truck there is ice one would mean James used to live in security Whitefield down the street from Whiteville park where the 737 a crashed in 1901 very Penn really active park and that's kind of where we got our start we would go there in the evenings and just going to log you know what was happening but there was this I don't know what happened in one night in 2008 what was happening in the world but I started having a lot of visions I had my dream time just exploded but I was experimenting with different levels of fear and. Releasing fear and so one of the things I would do I would play Silent Hill which is a really secure video game for every night for 2 weeks and see how it would influence my dream time and it came to a point where sometimes I didn't know if I was dreaming something or if I was remembering something but I remember this during this that summer there was this this ice cream truck with the exact that almost exact kind of melody that would go through our. Neighborhood and I kept having dreams about you know be offering something you know being offered something to kind of culminated in a dream about the devil the actual devil. And he had a message for me and I do a favor some in real life that oh my gosh he's scary he's going to take my soul you know drive away from it so it was Christmas time and me and James were driving away from a Wal-Mart and we saw this guy hit chicken hitchhiking on the corner who looked just like the devil I saw in my dream says I go keep going keep going and then the dream I had that night it was just this man that was just completely devastated because I allowed my fear to contaminate that experience you know if I would have stopped an approach you know talk to you had a special message for me so now we. Were much more about things that that don't have anything to do with fear that don't have anything to do with putting us in a state of paranoia or judgment or judgment you know to you know society's judgment you know the way society labels people and right here by the looks you know you he looked like a demon or whatever the devil type thing and bypass is just you know John Keel who wrote the Boston prophecies which they also made a movie on he talked a lot about detachment from fear and how it can contaminate your experience and we've gone to there's a gentleman by the name of Christopher O'Brien who's wrote a number of books about. The street high strangeness in the San Luis Valley we went down and met him and spoke with him at length and we had a kind of you a full watch one evening but I almost needed to be after a while I just needed. To move away from this group because I want to be influenced by their expectations or what they were so right so James like what you want to do it's in the middle of the night it's pitch black you know we can hear creatures in the background you know the branches rustling So it's going to kind of spooky you know it's like why don't we embrace this why don't we just embrace this fear why don't we take a hike up to support of falls in the dark you know obviously we need a flashlight My friend thought we were crazy but we did this and the closer we got to this waterfall you just hear this roaring of water you know it was just like a giant bell going through this canyon and we did it and it was just so liberating to do something like that because we may strophe here we do that we went up to a bat cave the next night which was on the Orient land trust they have a colony probably about like 250000 free tell Mexican bats and you can watch them at dusk just flying into the sunset in search of their food so it's just a very mystical experience but around that time just the the symbolism behind echolocation and finding your way in the dark that kind of culminated in experience we had later that year we we didn't investigation of the William stables in an old mining town and it was after a seance we had kind of like a little ghost hunt got some interesting things on video we went to have dinner and then I got a call from one of the presenters that you know asking if we put the chairs away you know we we had to leave it just as we you know so I just run back you know where they're already serving dinner is like you know this is going to take me all of like maybe 5 minutes I got back I went into the building one upstairs got all the way to the back of the building before I realised I had turned the light on so I still can't explain how that happened how able to kind of like I was able to see in the dark you know I was so used to looking through kind of these night vision screens you know the night vision cameras the full spectrum cameras that it was until I got back to the end of this the attic where I realized I had turned out lie on but I could I wasn't scared I could see everything it was just it was and I. Remember that were me when I have memories of that it's all I see is light you know surrounding me right so just that's never happened again either I can't explain how that happened who was able to negotiate my way in the pitch black in an attic. Oh yeah the most you're Batman you were actually echo locating at that time I know it's true it's true The Dark Knight actually have a bathroom. James work out but it's all of our it's just filled with a ton of that Batman memorabilia but during 2008 that was a time when I was really pulling kind of like that Dark Knight archetype into into my my life experience you know the thing is that if you ever go in your house and turn out the lights or close your eyes you turn out the lights enclosure and just listen and just start to walk and move around right you might look 1st and see where objects are so you have an approximation and just go and listen you can actually hear with furniture is a you can literally one time went into my kitchen and right in the doorway the refrigerator is on my right and I could feel a little bit of heat coming from the other side and and I went over and I put my hand on the toaster oven and it was emanating a little bit of heat and I could feel it from across the room so we have senses we do that we don't utilize you know it is just crazy you know I mean it when you when you feel someone looking at you you know what do you think that is you know I mean it's just there's so many senses that we haven't developed to work with when I was in that at the William stables What was it central city or Cripple Creek. It was more of like vibrations you know I wasn't making any noise I wasn't trying to call Ok I was get those chairs up so I can get back and have some dinner you know but it's it's just very true these the skills that we have and we don't really think about you know. So you know you've been like you said you've been on bunch of different shows I think what you will be I want to travel channel this month a couple times there's there's a couple shows right here so you know sometimes you film things you don't know how it's going to turn out if it's even going to matter if you know what's going to happen with that takes a long time for some of these things but last year last April some producers were visiting our website and you know got a hold of some of our we don't like to call it evidence or that we're investigators I mean it's such a boring judicial term or I guess or more explorers you know we're not qualified we're not qualified like you know how would you get that call for kids how would you know unless you make it one or self exactly we're not best experts I mean we're always we're always learning always but they they flew me out to Chicago it was this really old property built in 1901 a river north of property. So I went in and I sat by the window and I started to smell this perfume and I'm just kind of going over the stories things I want to talk about on the show and I just felt this presence and it was like this woman that was waiting for a lover that was never going to come you know someone that was maybe having an affair or something and she just and I was in the same space kind of James was unable to come with me it was just myself just kind of in this lonely state and then when I was I did my filming and then I was in a rush to get back to the the my room to change to eat and then get back to O'Hare so just being in that space I think again if a motion a motion is what a locks these things this kind of like stone tape theory were emotions events can be recorded by the objects whatever it is under certain circumstances they play themselves back so just in this rush you know with this intense energy I've got to do this I've got to do this at my door and I walked right through a businessman I've ever kind of seeing his tie my mind can make sense of it was like That's not a tire that's it's a door knocker that's there's a door knocker on the hotel door it's not. That but I couldn't process that at 1st and I felt everything that he was feeling I've got to do this I've got to do that have but Chicago is just it's a very very it's just saturated it's such an active place so that was a lot of a lot of fun to film that and we talked about I talked about my experience living down the street from my field park with James who's actually home when that plane crashed I believe it was March 3rd 1901 he thought an air earthquake was happening and we've told this story like several times before but the most ridiculous thing when it finally aired in Canada because it was a Canadian production was the people that they chose to portray me and James the actual actors and the special fx that they used you know we had said how there are some shadows you know we saw some shadows here and there we can find a light source for it or what was causing the shadows because it was really dark it was night and then of course you know the ad the shadow people running around so regardless of what you put out to writers you know they're going to take it in kind of manipulate it and make it more like a viewer friendly you know they were going to tell you where it's exciting where yes you know I could yeah so regardless of our beliefs and are there respect that we have for our ancestors and for the things the important events that have happened before as you know any time you're one of the shows they're going to and we've we've had a good time with Summer had a bad time you know any of these you know they sensationalize to get more interest and to grab you know they do they do since it's known as. Interesting because the 1st one of the 1st television experiences we did was for the Biography channel and it was a show called my ghost story which was later bought out by a Lifetime Movie Network but they had us that asked the question about what really happened and me and James Swan not coming from a place of fear we're just fascinated you know it was about the winds you know here in Colorado Springs and how the the Utes at one time believed it was one of the entrances to the underworld but there's a lot of cultures were you know they have associations with caves and underground you know tunnels with you know the under underworld so we were telling our story they'd ask us like another story tell me about your favor. Scary Movie what happened in this movie how did you feel when you saw this this movie so they'll actually mix the questions up when they edit this creative editing so because I had said that there were dark forces down there I never said that about cable the winds I said that about this movie I was I was watching but that's just the kind of the manipulation that that happens but what a wonderful time we had such a wonderful experience some travel channel Al So I met them a production crew and earlier this year in May Cripple Creek So we filmed outside of the ground hotel and Maggie's where we've done previously done a parable investigation just talking about the history and how you know for March with mortuary and just some of the more of a cop things that happened and its history I was there kind of official historian so scarce a lot of my life that's that was new to the program when we talk about wide field and that's going to premiere sometime this month probably close to whole Wien it's now on the Travel channel lineup I think if you have trouble channel you can go on that website and see some of the past episodes of the one they did in Cripple Creek that one I believe is called the most terrifying places in America because now I think this particular season it's called Haunted USA and that should be airing shortly as well I'll put it on my website what I know for sure we just use the Spirit chasers dot com Ok I'm going to do that because I was just going to say and just give us that name of that Web site again yeah. Yeah yeah after my father's death we just all these things that culminated to all these emotions all these you know we'd been doing this it was their 10 year anniversary as per normal explorers even though my 1st investigation was actually at 12 I'd been doing this for such a long time I think just because of our relationship with the spirit world anywhere we lived there was hauntings because we just expected them to to be but when there was 22 years ago was when they had that season finale of American Horror Story and they had this fictional paranormal team on there called Spirit chasers So it's like well where did they get that from and then when I looked it up I just happened to Google it I saw how many other teams there were parable teams called Spirit chasers and some of the. We're actually using our pictures you know you're lucky if maybe you get one picture and one year you know very very lucky so we worked really hard you know to get what we had says like I just I was ready to throw in the towel and then James Some suggested just changing our name changing our focus you know so which is what he did because the spars I don't know what else is called Future ghost when we started out there was no spirit chasers we started out it was just kind of a parody on of the ghost hunting teams right because even by that point it got very kind of side show and we were just it was almost like a mockery I don't post hunters spirit chasers you know yes yes yeah and so we were just trying to provide more of like an esoteric bent you know to a to a ghost hunting to find it's fun it's all these things but you know it's just better if maybe you do a little more consciously you really think about what you're what you're doing and I wish that you know the t.v. Producers would but also think that I mean where they where they're taking an answer from a different question and putting it in saying you know the cable wins has is is you know what is a gateway to hell or something like that which is what they want to say and you know what I mean but they're putting an emphasis when they said it didn't there's dark for Sam there yeah and that's not what you said about that place but now it's documented in videography yes that you're claiming that there's this here and that's not what it was so it's a misrepresentation and now other people who've watched that show going so this is a gateway you know your deuces dark forced down narrative and so now it's tainted Yeah and we got we got some flak from that from serious ghost hunters I think we're all pretty serious about what we do some of some people are just did you explain that to them we did we went there with the official historian of the winds who gave us a tour and because a lot of what the tour guides tell you is an exact truth there's this wonderful tour called the lantern tour which is more kind of like the ghost stories and stuff they just you know have this old fashioned Lantern it's we highly recommend it it's just so much fun but yeah he was telling us the actual truth behind because even what we told you know that my ghost story crew they still. Contactor The tour guides and got their take on it and back and used more of those stories because they were spoke your stories right so they veered away from more of like the truth it's come like we got when I got to Chicago you know this is what happened this is fact you can verify this writers took it kind of made it their own but it was still a really great experience but one who went back for the filming they had they flew our cameraman out from California to film us underground from it was like noon to 10 at night and we got even more pictures and things happening during that time and one of the things that kept happening was in the pictures we kept getting this image of this thing with a bow and arrow this very clear circular kind of like a bow and arrow shape which like intuitively I felt that it was a ute spirit I was connecting with a warrior who recognized that I was Native American so he was kind of our protector our guide because we went pretty far into ground and by ourselves again just feeling very vulnerable but of course you know producers wanted to say I don't this thing was stocking you this was a pretty was stuck. Right snow but you know it's just it's all good fun again for entertainment purposes only you just once you saw him out waiver you have no control about how it's going to be were you going to do it that yeah so it's just and I think it upset with you if you counter act what they did for the show when you say on like this show you know well that was set up this way this way this way and I mean do they come back and say to you you know you're I think if you if you look this far as like lawsuits maybe just paranoia will show lawsuit you can see how many times producers have manipulated these hosts but for my go astray and I mean that I don't think that's ever happened but I'm just you know we waited like a certain number of years when we were off the show when it's I mean it's no longer in production and out of respect you know we're just at that but I mean it was so much fun and we you know if I had I would always do that again if I had that experience you know I would still you know because they're still going to take what we say and just I'm going to like the newspaper. Yeah you know regular t.v. Stuff yeah I mean people are being people are so manipulated right now anyway you know right but unfortunately there are also some polarized you know you you put a commenter put something on social media and you have 300 people attack it and you're either accused of being this bleeding heart liberal or this racist right winger we're just we need to get back to who we are you know it's human beings and our search for the spirit in our lives you know I agree with so you know fortunately there is that that polarization and the only thing I think we're prepared for when we started really getting out to our work into the media was these trolls you know that would come and attack us and everything else we just took these things very personally so it took a few years 1st of all it's kind of like that the shell where it just bounces off and it's not that we don't have any respect or you know for these people for skeptics because James was the biggest skeptic people have no idea he still is to this day I mean he still won't go on record as saying he has any belief in a lot of the stuff he has to stay that you know and I respect that about him and that keeps me grounded and keeps me a little more focused because right and so that you're not like you're you know something clanking in the background you not automatically jumping dead it's a spirit I don't want that anyway just after you know we're always going and especially for the 1st 2 years just going to people's house having to identify Ok Creaky Boards heaters coming on all these things we found rational explanations for but we always give the benefit of the doubt you know I guess for like and you could say everything's haunted because there's a spirit and everything we believe that there's a spirit of wind and if you know I guess that word haunted is not of your great word it's not. Because they're you know I do agree that everything has a mention essence a type of consciousness does a vibration Yeah I mean I mean even these microphones and stuff it's all made up of atoms and electrons and everything else and it has its own essence even though we created. Into this form those original forms have I think a type of life force to them when I got to Chicago and I was sitting in that city near the window and I reached up and just put my finger I watch hotel impossible some really big about clean hotel rooms but I was checking that there was a ton of dust on top of this window sill and I just looked at it and I just wondered how many years it had been accumulating and I felt like a ghost you know I was just so still in this moment and I just kind of felt like I stepped out of time it's like some meditations I had after I had my Indian name or time just kind of stop you know wasn't it ceased to be linear and I was member listening to like a guided meditation or something and there was no beginning or end it was just all existing at once you know so are our best experiences pretty well investigators are when we step out of time stepped out of this kind of sideshow a screaming running mentality and you're just there occupying a space what's around you you know there's still vibrations there Rocco's you know she's really tapping into those echoes and that's really cool Now you were ghost hunting recently at the Stanley we did we stayed we stayed away from the Stanley for a long time because it was it got so crazy it and that was my favorite time of year too when like a member coming back from it was 2006 it was our 1st kind of exploration of Whitefield park and we had all these wonderful pictures that we couldn't explain and had Ghost Hunters live from the Stanley Hotel which they did every year for a while and I was tremendously exciting it was just you know other people to watch and connect watch what they're seeing but they started having conventions other haunts other than just got by my friend had been to She'd been one of these things and she was telling us how these people were getting people running people screaming people topping each other on the shoulder in the dark slamming doors just trying to so I just we stayed away from that for like a long time because we felt it had been kind of contaminated and people weren't really respecting that property because. That's the thing you really have to expect that you know respect the property you know where I lived in South Dakota you know all just all b.s. When you think about all the things that happened on the land you know you really have to honor the earth you know so it got to where. Stanley just kind of shut all these things down Ok for now we're just going to do our own ghost hunt you know with the with the people that the Louis employee says that will go back and check it out now that's kind of a died down and it was great I mean it was so well done that that particular guide knew so much about the location the history just so much respect there wasn't anyone freaking out or screaming or you know it was just really really respectful and they shared with you know all the all the pictures other people were getting on there you know so they didn't shy away from because there are some places here that they're more family friendly and they don't want to they don't want that to affect their tourism so they're more kind of quiet about what really happens that. Well you can really blame him yeah it's down me it's just they're very open with it so we had a really great time I mean this time last year we were in California so we you know our 1st stop was the Winchester Mystery House which you know Sarah was Winchester heir to the Winchester rifle fortune came to believe that she was haunted was the medium that told her this that she was haunted by all of the people that had been killed by the Winchester repeating rifles so what she did was she built a house and she kept building room after room after room until her death just a really very tragic story there's a movie about her now but of course doesn't completely do it justice what we were there there were still some areas that were closed off because of the filming but it was what did you sense when you were there for her I was really put off by the fact that they kept calling her bizarre you know this house is so bizarre because you get in there and how amazing this place is it's like a dream you go you know you have stairs that go up to the ceiling you have doors that open up to nowhere you have it was really how she built for the spirits you know this 13 she kept incorporating 13 windows 13 panes of glass 13 chandelier candelabras all these things so she knew what she was doing you know she really did and so she wasn't crazy she was about I think there was definitely obsession there Mary but I don't sense of craziness at all no war then the craziness that comes after this tragedy of losing her her child you know losing her husband so that's all she had you know she just became kind of she never wanted to I think there's like one photograph of her she don't want to be photographed so we went in there and she's still there you know it is just it was amazing but a gift shop was huge you know I understand that they have to keep because I want to use this income coming in there but it was just kind of restrict I we didn't know that you could take pictures in there we kind of snuck some but you're not allowed to take pictures inside the winch I know nothing I hear nothing you know that and I'm going to have this little bit with costumes are used in the movie and stuff but it was. And you know for years we've been looking at the Winchester and these picture books and stuff and it looks so isolated off by itself but it's across the street from like a movie theater it's on a very busy street it was just not what we expected right now did you pick up stuff there did you have heard some instruments you know give us some examples James James always gets in trouble we don't need to be disrespectful on tours but he'll hang back a lot like this you know in the San Luis Valley it was you know it again getting away from the crowd and that energy of expectation you know it has to be a ghost it has to be U.F.O.'s to be a big foot let it be whatever it wants the 1st time we ever it sounds funny when we talk about fairies but in Ireland where holding originated. Fairies are crucial part of this holiday you know they still build around fairy mounds you know constructs they still contract around the spirit very ones that are very sacred to them and they associate with fairies and aliens and U.F.O.'s and you know if you really look at it it's just a very interesting lore but. He'll hang back like a lot to get away from other people's expectations but the 1st time I ever thought I had fairy envy I was I I kept attracting these people that it seemed fairies claim to see fairies I want to see what this is and we took a number of pictures one evening again at Whitefield park where the spirit portal was supposed to lie and eventually they started looking more and more like very spring the beginning they were just these kind of luminous and we have a name for them and in Sue It's putting your whole life which I think the literal translation is more like a ball of light but there are beings that are made of light they emit light and that's what we were seeing and we were you know saying Ok you don't have to be this have these wings or have these like long gossamer kind of right do whatever you are you know we'll just give you the benefit of the doubt and you know we don't even have to call you a fairy same thing we've seen what's a phantom what's that what's the difference between a spirit a phantom a ghost could you show us a. Fan of what that looks like and we saw this cloaked who did I don't know what the hell it was at that wild west museum so so so when we go on tours James just likes to kind of Hain back get as far as he can away from the rest of the crowd and there was a lot that we were picking up on we kept hearing it's organ I don't know exactly where it was coming from they also do like candlelight tours they were doing one that evening but that evening we were boarding the u.s.s. Hornet which was just it was one of those places we've never been to and those people really really know what they're doing they're just not rehearsing lines or rehashing the script there are people that live there and that work there and obviously military so they have a lot of Honor and horn appreciation for a do but the phenomenon of St Elmo's Fire which is like that weird blue plasma that used to manifest on massive ships and used to because like a bad omen they see that all the time in there so some of that of what they're seeing it's not necessarily supernatural it's just something phenomena that we haven't identified or explained properly you know yet right but all of them have seen this plasma but they've also seen shipmates that have died years and years ago throughout you know the deck sense of this ship I've never even been to a shipyard before so trying to find this place and identify this boat out of all these other boats that are dock there again it was just a matter of closing my eyes and just kind of feeling out the vibration as like well like Ok I take this one around there was the right one. The next day we had gone to we checked into the sad remind San Francisco which was for a brothel where many claims to get molested by the working girls that are still there and they disappeared tired from running or we got lost and shit like this I'm wearing today I got in Chinatown and we really wanted to and what is that if your race is a piece of jade and how we got it at this really really old story when or booking it is that with this these old kind of markings. And we were really trying to tap into these to the ancestors there are these people these herbalists there that that have been practicing this craft for years but we couldn't we could read anything and we got lost it's I mean it's just so big but it was great getting a lot you know how can you really be lost if you never been somewhere before so we just we had such a great time and we you know when the stunt started sun started to set we went down to the docks and got on a boat and. Took a ferry to the Queen to the Alcatraz right which was really that was the only place I've ever been to as a paranormal Explorer way that actually consciously had to unplug from the environment I just could not take it to there's such a feeling I had they put in solitary confinement a closed door so your pitch black it's kind of stinky musty as soon as I put my back against the wall I felt like this person being shanked this tremendous pain in my gut in this very sharp pain so I moved off the wall and I'm not claustrophobic you know all these hours we spent in care with the winds we've been there several times exploring I just I just really started feeling that so we got out of there and I was so happy when from we got into the gift shop it's all well lit but the energy of Alcatraz day versus night is just very very different you know I think that's almost any environment yes as you go to put respect in those type Yeah they don't allow you to go I mean you can go in some of the cells and there are some other areas throughout Alcatraz that you can explore there's a probably about $100.00 people in the boat I mean there is a lot a lot more people who are of course it's October it's before Halloween but there are places where you could go on the island and just kind of sit by yourself without anyone are around so we did and it was I had a full spectrum camera which is a camera that you want to see be on the Internet infrared it's not entirely like full spectrum but you see a little more than what you'd see like with a regular camera and it kind of has this surreal bluish glow to it so when I think back on the time being on alcohol. On this island it was just I remember through these hues of history dreamlike quite of kind of blue and then of course the next day we drove 7 hours to the Queen Mary I would go to e.v.p. I can play for you too and that place is just really going back into that I have still let's see that e.v.p. So I set this up for you this was we were so ill that we kind of dropped our name you know we do that sometimes you know we're we're pretty well known and they let us into the pool room which has been closed off of the public for years there's no water in this pool and I don't know if that's as much liability as it is people still see and hear a lot of things you know Peter James this famous psychic there's so many people over the years that have been to this location that I felt the spirit portal there and we just kept wondering my intent was to go there and find out exactly what's causing it why it why would there be a portal in this particular part of the ship and then we found out the whole Rufus quartz crystal and which stores energy which magnifies energy which helps focus and direct energy so it's right to wind right after the our guy is talking to us about that ceiling you hear him say it's quartz crystal you can hear someone saying say Ok let's hear it her. It was. So yeah the 2nd time he says this is quartz crystal you can hear him again save me a plate get her. Oh yeah so what they another report from the ship is these feet that you'll get like the way feet even though there are no water in the pool anymore just walking about the ship with sadhana and episode of Unsolved Mysteries and it was kind of I remember trying to remember which show was that had I think it was another show too that might have been a ghost hunters or one of the other ones that were on that also they were wet foot dry. It's Yeah this place has been dry Yeah we got him we got him on on camera it's so we got him through a flurry camera we did there was areas where that were dark that were cold that were just spooky we had about 4 people leave the tour because we had things happening 2 of them left in tears so we were down to about maybe 8 people towards the end of the tour and how many had started with 12 I think it was a smaller group which were very very appreciative because when you try to record piece and you know you have people kind of contaminating the space but I mean they really know what they're doing they separated groups so there was this particular hallway that I want to go down because there's a light source it was just completely dark and of course me I was trying to flee I wonder if I could do the same thing I did at the William stables just walk into this environment with no light and be able to see in the dark again which I could completely do and you know there's there's railings you can fall over and hurt yourself so you know we're not stupid but I took I had I had a night vision while floor camera which it's a thermal camera so I had done experiments where I had put my hand on a particular railing left come back just kind of to kind of gauge how long it would take for that heat signature to dissipate right because we had seen hand prints and things here and there but no one was going down this particular hallway it was just dark and cold and just you know uncomfortable some places just very uncomfortable and areas of high electromagnet to be too can cause dizziness and different things so I told James I was like we'll just wait here you know just we were having a recording session so very kind of quietly tiptoeing down this hallway with nothing but my floor camera to kind of see where I was going and I get to the end of the hallway and there's the footprints right there in front of me and I just was kind of taken aback at 1st your mind is always trying to make sense of what you're I put my hand out and there's just this perfect funnel of cold energy and that's not the 1st time that's happened we used to live down the hill from Crystal cemetery Manitou same thing you know this. Ariel We captured like an organ which was the dust was a bug wasn't any of these things it was a signature a light signature of some kind of spirit d'Albret activity and we had put our my Pro my hand out you could feel this funnel of cold energy Shonku Sherry again from the Colorado alliance of paranormal investigators and media he was there to confirm this we got a picture of him with the Orb underneath his hand right where we felt this thing we had taken pictures also of our friend because I kept seeing someone in the middle of them so we've gone back a ways and I took a picture and we got a picture of you see my 2 friends at a middle of a there's a body you can only see him from the from the feet up so it's he's cut off at the waist and you can't see anything else but also one of them had also taken my picture standing there and it came out all screwed up like I had some time distortion I'm just I wasn't moving I was completely still I had my hand out but my face and everything is just so screwed up so we want to create some kind of thing you know like a fan you don't see the blades turning because they're turning so fast but if you do this with your hand you can see the blade still you know you look through it yes it's a wave and so something to where we can kind of peek at that because there's some time differential that is crucial to this phenomenon that we quite have learned to master you know and also it was said during that investigation of the Queen Mary how all these ghosts lights people making ghosts lights for infrared lights for your for your night vision cameras and your full spectrum cameras and supposed to see into this realm or make it easier to capture this capture the sec typically a lot of spirits we're getting are shying away from these things especially anything with a red light you know we have so many tools and cameras that project this little red light and right they've done a number of investigations where for some reason I don't know if it's symbolic of fire or hell or what that is but they don't like red light they just they do not like that light so if you're if you're out somewhere just kind of experience experiment with not using a red lighting and see what what happens you know and you notice a big difference we do yeah we stop using it and. And another thing too is what's gone like to use now we just more like when we were at the Alcatraz you know this this full spectrum you get this kind of bluish surreal quality to it and we took it to Cheesman in Denver which used to be the old Mt prospects of Metairie and allegedly Steven Spielberg's inspiration for poltergeist maybe up to $5000.00 bodies are still buried underground Baylor moved to headstones probably the most active site we've ever been to and it's free to go you know you don't need some 50 dollars for Tor just read one of our blogs so the spirit chaser dot com Go yourself take a camera but there's depressions in the earth where the old wooden coffins have collapsed and we were we one evening we took the full spectrum camera and we were recording around these sites and you can see silhouettes of people people kneeling like they're kneeling on the bare where the old grave sites you know were so even that impression was left behind Yes yes it's a full morning a while yeah it's I think it's maybe 23 weeks out we're doing an investigation and you have some of those pictures Oh absolutely yeah yeah we've got a thing that looks like a tornado in the middle of the road I don't know if it's some kind of portal again we don't try to assume what is rice you know this is a ghost This is a ghost of what's its name is letting it be what it wants to be but the devil will tell it Gardens does one of the best tours we've ever been on which is a night tour of that of their property which you know every time they've done construction it's just all these bones and Rochester caskets they're digging up there's a very high highly publicized one when they were working on other parking lots they found a skeleton it was their free day like last month so we went down mean Shanku Shea one of our friends and the others construction going on in one of the ends of that gardens and every time that bulldozer kept unloading its earth I kept waiting for a skeleton to come rolling out of there you get to go into the into one of the mansions that's you know usually closed off to the public but it's such an active site I mean security guards that are seen people there in the middle of the night have chased him down they've seen a. Run through fences into Cheeseman I mean it's such an expansive area where this cemetery was and the next time you go you've got a cold. You have to go Yeah you just have to obviously or some of that has a boundaries in place you know to take on energy might buy a corset that happy when he found out that they were works you know exploring these places it's when you have a lineage where you where you have healers you know like a medicine man in your family it's dangerous because you take you can take all that energy prices you give energy you can bet on obviously if we've found a way to shield us to shield that after all these years but it's just one of our favorite places it's it's a place that I dream of often and we actually filmed a 2nd episode of my ghost story there in 2012 they flew a cameraman up from l.a. Again and it was me and my cousin this time and it was our experience the 1st time we'd ever been to cheese Mobil the 1st time we ever explored Cheeseman it's paranormal investigators and I was telling this man about these depressions in the earth and you could kind of see the outline of a coffin in one of the depressions so he filmed it to see what it looked like during the day we were back at night and by that time it had completely collapsed as an open coffin which he got on camera I don't know why they didn't use that if it was a rights issue or it's because it had been on 2 episodes I don't know what it was but and again some of those pictures are on our website to the spirit chasers not if I have to go look at that I have it's been a while since I've looked at the Web site but now I'm going to jump ahead here for a 2nd when you have something to vent coming up this month Yeah so it's me and James this feature ghost we're being joined by Sean crew of the Colorado alliance of paranormal investigators and mediums they get how difficult it is to take a breath. It's at the celebration conscious living store community room which is 175 card of the gods you can call civil 106-341-8552 make reservations or you can go just to this website which is celebration Store dot com But it's Friday October 22nd 26th so it's a lot. Friday night before Halloween I know probably a lot going on that night but it's from 7 to 9 pm And what we're doing because this is our 12th anniversary 12 has always been a magic number for us to Apostles 12 so many things with 12 in there but we're going to do it so you know every year we always do this kind of again we don't really like using the word evidence but it's like evidence reveal where we share all the material we've gotten since last since last year and of course last year was Queen Mary u.s.s. Hornet all these places but it's going to be the 12 years of the material that we've amassed all of our spirit hunger for your piece Shawn is going to be there demonstrating showing the tools that he works with doing a live. Demonstration of a spear box I'm not sure if you know what that is but yeah I know there were you know. Something a common friend Michael Yes Had you know brought forward you to many many many years ago that have got you know prolifically spread out through the community of people who were doing you know paranormal investigations Yes Yeah I mean James there was a group by the name of the assembly in England several years ago and what he would do was he would have a different singer for every single day he did are our group kind of works the same way you know we we employ people not really employed but we invite people based on the skills they have the experience for investigations so it's always different a little to it's always need to mix it up and to get different perspectives. But so when we've been out we have people that have had you know used obvious spirit box so many different so it's neat to kind of get a sense of what works and what doesn't because some of these are just Victorian novelty you know we are done with these tours where you you're put in a room in the middle of in the dark with a flashlight you know enough with a flashlight but the other thing is that they go and screw it to where the contacts are barely touching the last yes or no questions you know the thing all bling. But it's so easy to well time is really up here believe it or not I want you back you know because I want to I want to really go into more depth in some of these different cases that you've done in any ideas or we can talk just like we're doing right now going into what's actually happening in society and then tying it into you know like I did with the residual energy so you know creating this energy that's going to take a life of its own you know looking back on this and 29 years and how are you going to feel about the energy you invested in it you know my Choose wisely choose exactly. So this is key c m j o p 93.9 Colorado Springs and our guest was Chris and thank you so much for having me yes and it's from what's the name of the future you're also at the spirit chasers dot com Right and there's is there any other ways to get a hold of you or would you just like to leave it at that you can you can come to my event we we did that for Comic-Con we were special guests earlier in June and we had a lot of people touch our touching base with us sharing stories so I encourage you to come to our event so we can see you face to face show us you know your your pictures you've taken and it's a great way to bring the community together there's a lot you do great work just to model it you know think you so much and I appreciate you coming on the show when I think you just again you've been listening to the John Fund hard hour. Now being a Marine spouse is a unique spouse all in it self when you. Absolutely absolutely won't because the Marine Corps smaller you know than some of the other branches so it's kind of. Kind of like its own little exclusive club. And I'm sure everybody feels that way. I just think the Marine Corps tends to be a little bit of an anomaly because people don't really know what makes a Marine Corps different. Or why like I have I have a couple of family members who are like well why why are Marines so arrogant you know why did they think they're the best of the best and you know every branch has their. Branch pride but I just think you could. Be super proud. In that only spells but you're also a military spouse but you're a mom of a military service members as well.

John Spencer there of course who else could it be the track from his Banyan new album Spencer sings the hits Yes it is cold that he's a rock N roll life for John Spencer he's played to the Blues Explosion Boss Hog Pussy Galore and heavy trash amongst others and it was great to hear bell bottoms John Spencer Blues Explosion track in the baby driver film soundtrack recently Now if you like John Spencer's back catalogue the new album fits in perfectly as if it wouldn't be just played broadcast in Glasgow on Saturday was anyone there I wasn't sadly last time I saw John Spencer It was heavy trash and he was playing in a 6 Music Show and he was a life guest on the program he called me young man all the way through the show which is a compliment for an amount of my vintage but yeah great stuff from John Spencer's Vic Gallo a year in B.B.C. Radio Scotland if you're listening to live on a Monday night why not get in touch I'd love to hear from you to 95 is the text as 80295 you like to text and Galloway at B.B.C. The a. Super new track from lie low smooth sounding Glasgow Act 2 you've been in session on this show with me on B.B.C. 6 Music earlier this year they're going to be releasing individual singles over the next few months and that is the 1st of that kind of series they won Best Live Act at the Samas and the Scottish Alternative Music Awards was a great night on Thursday last week in St Luke's in Glasgow and I gave a couple of awards. Best elec tronic went to loke Indra and best rock ole turnouts have went to Declan Welsh and the decadent west but well done to all the winners including lie low of course and well done to Richie Muirhead for putting soundness on it started as a college project and it's now and its 9th year Amazing stuff this is that Galileo on B.B.C. Radio Scotland Ross from father son came into our studios recently to record a special guest list interview selecting some of the records and chains that have influenced his mind body and soul over the years you'll hear that after something from the band's brand new album some of all your parts this is Father Son and the perfectly heavy charm school. And the. Lead. Hi My name is. Called Father Son and this is my guest list things. You. Just might use. If I was to D.J. My own funeral. The funeral with would be to always look on the bright side of life on one hand as. To leave the funeral with. The. Also a bit of a jewel so that we had. A lovely hopefully not too sad day and then. Something. Just. Preference and if. We. Had to discuss my musical guilty pleasure of examples really. Think it's maybe the best song ever been. Heartbreaking fashion but you can do that because it like a super glue song with like crazy. As the so-called Saudi. House. If there was a song that I wish I had written it would probably be no one's going to love you bye bye and the horses. And listen to for years I never really connected with the Bears in those on the album I was on the same album like a funeral and the foot I was on but it just songs just credible just like the way that talks about a situation of like this isn't going to work I don't think anyone's ever going to love us much as I love to think it's not pure one pick triumph and almost I think I wish I'd written in the past just enemies and. If I could only listen to one artist for the rest of my life I think it would be Sigur Ros mainly because there's so much music to listen to and pray my eyes changes every time you listen to and hear this play spellbinding I can imagine if you like on your own. If you can only ever listen to one person of a COTA like I'd rather go down a more like class called a. More contemporary interest in this whole thing I think you could spend your life listening to classical music but I think you would get bored of songs because I can understand what they're saying as small songs too and to see them and they C.C. Years ago and one of the most. Incredible. And I have a baby to my head is like 5 those instruments cause people to sing whole people just like it was I was an incredible thing to see and I reckon that it is. Probably the only person in the world that wouldn't. Listen to them for hours. And I was listening to the radio and had to be because of David's new sort of music music I think you know 7 days in a sort of classic sort of. Music. That's new sort of like crazy hench sexual being Craig David I'm not really playing because what we have. One of the most important gigs I think I ever went to and one of the best gigs I ever went to for the shit in this piece emanating. From back in the class on the play maybe see just like standing at the bar with us like quadrophonic Pete thing like what it was like I think it was a. Big chore like it was super emotional and I think for the 1st I just remember just like. The way I was overwhelmed by the whole situation just played absolutely. As really poignant. Stop it. grams chosen by Ross Leighton from Father Son year it's Monte Python Candy STATE AND DEMI LOVATO Band of Horses Seeger Ross Craig David and. With Hi I'm from b.b.c. Radio would you consider a prenuptial agreement. Which is based on love so I've even thought about it no no really I mean we don't think it's about this stuff. Excuse me you Mary but a chance we are getting married you're getting married are you considering a prenuptial agreement no I don't think so kind of I'm not keen on this I'm sorry but some randomly accosted couples there on the streets of central London and yes prenuptial agreements you heard us discussing them and that is all theme in today's program why would anyone want one I'm joined now by a whole bunch of experts on this subject we're going to get to all of them one by one and she calls but 1st. She's founder and president of the law firm based in London very simply Ayesha for us what is a prenuptial agreement what's it for a prenuptial agreement is a private agreement between the parties to a marriage whereby they make their own arrangements for how things will be managed in event of their divorce rather than relying on the state contract say it's important to understand that there's a marital property regime in place however you think your marriage is it does result in financial consequences which would be applied by the courts if you haven't done anything about it and which can be a nasty shock when people arrive at them by and large most rich countries in the world. As a kind of a 5050 deal it varies enormously restricted to needs as it was sama on capital sharing but there will be a. Series of rules that will apply you may not know about where you may know about this is about making bespoke rules between you posses it's individual autonomy versus state control you are a standard bearer in a way are you not yourself because you won this whole mall case back in 2010 making prenup legally enforceable in a way and it was very important to us I mean it was something of a Chris 8 especially as it were Chris a for women the argument that we have objects put forward to the court was that women were expecting rightly to have equal power equal opportunity equal pay for equal work and an equal place at the table and with that went equal responsibility the judges accepted what they'd been doing for years and they said this specifically from the Court of Appeal is that women have long been considered so desperate to marry that they can't be expected to keep a clear head when they're faced with a proposal and therefore they'll agree to anything and they're such weak minded people that they can't then be expected to be held to that bargains and the Court of Appeal decided this approach was paternalistic and patch arising and say they got rid of it that plus the idea that prenup contemplate divorce and divorce is evil and countries public policy they are sacred of fat Ok We're going to get into all of the details in just a little moment about the for and against arguments on this but I'd like to bring in someone else right now Erin Lowry she's also broke millennial which is both a website on a book all about personal finance Erin you recently got married that's right congratulations thank you very much to weeks ago we've Yang Chu from your honeymoon here have indeed you signed a prenup not only did I sign it I proposed it wow what was in it what was really important to me is that I have a business that I wanted to protect and I also receive royalties on my books so I wanted to ensure that in the instance that we were to get divorced everything that was related to the business remained mine. As did the royalties and the other thought too was debt you know I live in America we have a huge student loan debt crisis and I'm coming into this marriage debt free and my husband unfortunately does have some student loan debt that I'm in the position to pay off so part of the conversation as well was Ok if we make the decision for the money I'm bringing into the marriage to be used to pay off the student loan debt what happens if we got divorced in a year or 2 in the court of law here that would have been considered a gift if it wasn't otherwise stipulated in a prenup so that is also something that's in our prenuptial agreement I mean you are obviously right proposal finance this is your bread and butter in a way but help me with this I'm trying to picture myself getting well in my case will be remarried but darling I love you will use on my prenup I mean how did that come across that would between you and your intended Well it was definitely an evolving process and I do believe this is key here is that you're bringing up this conversation early not waiting until rate under the gun you're about to walk down the aisle and for us we actually started talking about it before we even got engaged and let's see what the personal finance he does not he's a teacher so this was not something that he felt particularly strongly about it's not something he really would have considered do work in money so he wasn't completely blindsided and the way I did present it was that it was a practical thing to do and I said I love you and of course our marriage is about love but also at the end of the day this is a merger of assets and you know I would never enter into a contractual obligation with someone else or with a company without protecting myself and I want to make sure that you're protected and that I'm protected because as it was already mentioned if you don't have a prenup it defaults to the laws of your state and so I didn't want to be subjected to whatever New York State law was I wanted to take that control back considering how many millennia as are either children of divorce or watched parents go through extreme financial situations possibly as a byproduct of divorce and you know. Are kind of at the beginning stages of millenniums getting married even on the older end of the spectrum so I do believe we're starting to see a shift in the millennia old generation Ok my 3rd guest today is Laurie Israel She's from Israel and Korean days law in Brookline Massachusetts Lori you're also the author of the generous pre-nup What's your take on all of this I'm very concerned about prenup especially in 1st marriages I think that people entering into 1st marriages are in no position to understand what a long term marriage entails you are deciding things based on the facts that are in place at the time and not the facts as they may transpire through a long marriage and then if you're very young you're deciding based on very little knowledge the idea of 220 year olds deciding what they want in the result is a little bit odd to me marriages work when there's 100 percent commitment and 100 percent of what you do is in furtherance of the marriage so if somebody who is a highly paid business person gets married to a schoolteacher and they're married for a long time it doesn't seem to be fair for the the business person to reap the benefits of the business where the other person is doing some social good by being a teacher and then it gets more complicated when people have children because there's off often a sharing of responsibilities where one person does more of the home making in child raising usually that person is the woman who puts her career in 2nd place I should there is a point there isn't there I mean you could certainly get into a position with 2 perhaps unequal parties an equal experience or wealth where one police the other one into signing something at a point when it's very hard to take it in for you can't be bullied into signing something if there's giraffes it doesn't work it's not effective but how do you from there isn't us I mean there is if you're just talking about one wanting it more than the out that. Then that's an entirely different matter the fact is that this sort of attitude comes from the Idea Festival that marriage is definitely going to be forever that's we'll cross our fingers and hope but the fact is that nearly half end in divorce and say one has to be prepared for this eventuality and a lot of marriages have been discouraged by the financial exposure the other element is that people are saying well you know they are right love but will carry on having this relationship will have children as well but I'm not going to marry and then people are continuing in that vein because they don't know anything about their legal rights generally and then you end up with absolutely no provision for people whatsoever rather than them having legal advice and an understanding and something that is I mean I got married with a pre-nup 2nd time around and we base very very much wanted it but this was a sort of situation that Lauri's Ok with this was you know a 2nd marriage and children all of that but they're all situations where you have somebody who doesn't want it and somebody who does but they want the marriage and so they make an evaluation do I want this marriage enough to have this prenup if the answer is yes they go ahead if the answer is no they don't or they negotiate a better deal or the marriage just doesn't go ahead then they carry on living together or they break up because they view things fundamentally differently having a prenup enables people to agree between them I think this is fair I'm willing to live with this and if I'm not well I'm just not going to marry and I'm going to choose somebody who values my contribution hia Ok And the idea that anybody is not capable of doing that is what is paternalistic unpatched rising Lori The problem with that is that getting married does provide protections that are provided by the state and those protections are part of public policy to support people especially also age there is public policy to support spouses there's public policy to support children and most people marry without premiums pre-nuptial are actually very very rare I'm not against all praying ups and I. I think they're very useful in 2nd marriages where people have wealth and 2nd marriages where they're children from previous marriages I think they're very useful for people that have family wealth and family businesses but I think they need to be done extremely carefully and very customized to the particular situation Erin in my own personal experience part of the reason that I wanted a prenup is because I believed I would be more fair and generous now you're at a point in your relationship where you are so in love you aren't going to be vengeful because who knows why you're getting divorced and it wasn't a bullying aspect of it it was a conversation and certainly neither one signed under duress in our particular situation and if you can prove you signed under duress it should be able to invalidate your prenup as well and the process of talking through a prenup really brings out everything that you need to be putting on the table before you get married because so many people get married without having these incredibly important financial conversations which of course causes intense struggle in the marriage I just want to just talk me through this a very specific case study imagine 2 middle class 20 somethings getting married for the 1st time in each case why would they in the u.k. For example or in the United States or in perhaps any Western liberal democracy go into a pre-nup too in the home the Lord is going to give them anyway I mean festival what Erin said about the value of talking through your finances is incredibly important some marriages will not get ahead because they realise we just don't agree on all sorts of points and those that do will be that much stronger and better informed say that's the 1st value of anyone talking through this the next one is there are 2 fundamental approaches to what the matrimonial distribution should be on divorce one is that you should read just repeat so as to make sure that nobody is left in a situation of basic need the other approach is that everything that's built up during the marriage or indeed everything you've ever had to pending on the regime but in England everything. Built up to the marriage is split 5050 some people don't agree with that philosophically some people feel that if I'm going to absolutely plastic out and you know the other person wants to have a much more relaxed approach to life then we don't want to share 5050 say the big thing that pre-nup can do they live in a the capital sharing element and that's quite often what people do with them if they're not big money cases from the start if they're just people who might go ahead and make money in their own ways in the future they keep that effectively hived off for their own concern the other thing is just very simply it's very expensive and miserable and grisly to have to go through a financially contested divorce it can take a year or year is it's lots of money into the pockets of lawyers that come straight hash of the Marshall pot you know you were doing your stuff when you were doing yourself a lot of become well I'm making this legal process it's like takis baiting for Christmas that's absolutely right Lori is it not a good way of just keeping the lawyers out of it when the time comes that you do separate divorce law is so full of cases and experiences with judges orders and statutes and what these orders and cases do is tell you what this state believes is fair for a result under various fact patterns there's hundreds of factors in a divorce so a divorce that's under the law of your state actually is the most customized kind of divorce you can get most cases do not live again because of this very fulsome law that is out there in the state for lawyers to have benefit of and also there's all sorts of ways to get a divorce now from mediation to collaborative divorce to arbitration You're listening to in the balance from the b.b.c. With my guests lawyers. And Lori Israel and the finance writer and newlywed Erin Laurie we're looking at prenuptial agreements. A Why they're more and more common what they're for and they're spread to other parts of the world as well on which theme I'd like now to introduce from a studio in a booth in Nigeria Leslie Uggams She's founder and partner there at Demo to solicitors and advocate she's also a blogger and activist on women's issues Leslie tell us your story you are now trying I understand to introduce prenuptial agreements as a more widespread thing in one area I want to agree with Aaron here especially amongst millennial Yes We're not introducing them to prenup they're asking for it they're more interested in protecting their assets most of them their own to premier ial And they're increasingly asking if a prenup 1st of all a valid which they are in Nigeria and they're increasingly asking for prenup so would you say that state law government law in Nigeria is inadequate is not equitable in terms of sharing of property Yes Nigeria is a separate marital property redeem basically what it means is that when a couple come together a woman's property is her property and the man's property is his property and it remains so during the course of their marriage there's nothing like marital property except that they can show that they have contributed which means actually providing evidence that say you've contributed towards the purchase of a house or other assets so basically in western law most countries there would be a more generous provision for women wouldn't exactly and that's another reason why I'm very positively inclined to preen ups like Erin did say at the beginning of a relationship everybody is in love it's nice that's the time for any woman here in Nigeria who probably would not get a very good settlement in the case of a divorce 10 years down the line that's the time to actually discuss a prenup How does that work I'm talking a culturally here when you're putting it all let's say women clients of yours opening it to the future husbands It depends on on how it's approached and who's approached there's a whole. Swath of the population that won't even discuss signing wills much less a prenup but there is a growing demographic discussing financial issues before marriage and yes mostly the Millennial but what about tribal law in practice it will be very different Won't it from the official kind of high court rulings Oh absolutely there's tribal law we have probably like 200 different tribal systems in Nigeria under tribal laws true it does not exist but like I said increasingly couples are wedding under the statutory law which is why also lawyers like myself just like happened in the u.k. What we're striving to do is to reinterpret these laws and expand the rights that women especially or men as the case might be can now enjoy under these laws I should couples travel to the u.k. Specifically to get divorces not unlike they do although they don't have them and unless they actually have a proper connection to the u.k. If they are entitle to they will come to the u.k. Because it's seen as very straight incorruptible and very fair so it's very attractive to those who are the weaker financial parties if it's within Europe then it's whoever gets in 1st say so you're telling women really hard to leap onto the train on the year is to get them as favorable jurisdiction and that's the situation because the rules are different him throughout Europe Laurie do you not accept that when you look around the world having a little more proactive approach to the rules and rights of particular women going into marriage is probably a healthy thing yes I think it's a healthy thing but what I see here in the prenup is that I see news there's almost always an element of coercion but the omens of coercion doesn't rise to the level where the prenup could be invalidated they were committed couple and then this starts getting to discussed sometimes after the wedding date is set. Sometimes because somebody has parents wants their song or daughter to have a pre-nup and it becomes a really horrible process to children ever get embroiled in the next step to prehaps they don't do that under English well you can't be providing definitively for the level of provision for children or indeed who's going to be with the children because I mean my experience of divorce is that I've heard about you know in my social circle they tend to get most bitter most acrimonious the most ugly around the issue of children and maced cases litigate about children usually people are able to grieve but yes when they do fight about children that is the thing that is most to the hot I wouldn't do is to toll pre-nup that said Right you know if we divorce the children are going to spend you know x. Number of days with this one next number of days without one or anything like that Erin refers to the fact that couples quite often just happily live together without even getting married because they don't need to that perhaps is a pretty sure way of looking at things and perhaps in the United States it is expected that marriage will occur when to when people are living together and therefore there is automatically a degree of coercion of one side is going to be pushing hard for a prenup the other one's going to you know I just have to for the sake of them the wedding of my family and everything well that's definitely one reason I think it's healthy to talk about a prenup before you even get engaged so there's an expectation that this is something that at least one party wants to actually touch on what Laurie said about parents wanting premiums for their children that's something that I've noticed is a bit of a trend especially amongst the wealthy and one thing I highly advocate is that if you're the party approaching your future spouse about a prenup do not say this is because my parents want it because that's a very easy way to sour the relationship between your parents and your future spouse and instead it should be a conversation about the 2 of you and another thing that I highly advocate people doing is before you bring in lawyers before any of it becomes official it all take time separately to. Go through what you each would want to have in a prenup and then come together and discuss this and that way before you bring in lawyers before anything could possibly become acrimonious or you know subject to a cordial and in the prenup stage you've actually had a very healthy conversation about what you want and why you want that in there excellent advice I'm sure I should very briefly what would your tips be well days are indeed absolutely excellent tips I very much agree it's about sitting down together and working out what you want you don't want this just to be announced by way of a letter from annoyance saying Right we expect you to sign this it's got to be right we're coming into this as independent adults who are making a decision should be together this is what I think would be fair are you a k. With that these are my real sticking points these are the things I can be flexible on let's just sit down together and work it out and then you just get the lawyers to come in off to that but you've just got to remember that you're coming into it with love and having that prenup between shows the world that you are independent equals who are getting together for love and who are able to make decisions between you because you care about each other and you respect each other and you're going to honor each other's autonomy Lawry they remain Naish for better or for worse how widespread you think pre-nuptial going to become I think that they're very rare now probably less than one percent I think they're going to be you come more Mom modern and maybe get up to 2 percent but I'd like to say 2 things in response to what I just set and what Erin said I agree with Erin yes don't bring in lawyers right away and what I have to scuppered in my practice is that mediating prenup says a great 1st step when the 2 parties talk to each other and then meet with a neutral mediator and the mediator helps them talk and helps them figure out a turn sheet of what they want having a neutral conducting the discussion with some knowledge of divorce law and estate planning law can really help a couple clarify what they might want in their prey. In up the side I think that's a very good way to start if you decide to start the process of exploring or getting a prenup Leslie Uggams I'd like to say especially in response to what Laurie said and also as a final word to everybody I don't think we need to look at prenup as giving up rights I think if we can also look at prenup such as having the possibility of conferring rights I think it will also be less of a contentious issue between the parties who are who are getting married and also I want to read to rate what Erin said having 8 the Scotian about finances I think should be Monday tree for all people who are getting married and my long term view is I think that pre-nup so going to get more popular all over the world especially as incomes rise that's it for this edition of In The Balance by thanks to all of my guests. Hello on money Chesterton and coming up on current science we get into the subject of sex specifically the hows and whys of what makes you male female some animals seem to be able to change sex pretty easily and yet for others once a male always a male will be meeting the scientists who've team could with this set up mating male fish with male fish to produce super males biology in all its gloriously unusual variations coming up on crowd science after the news b.b.c. And Pope Francis has called on politicians to take action to combat the emergency of plastics littering season oceans the pope said efforts to fight plastics letter must be waged as if everything depended on us b.b.c. News. This is crowd science from the b.b.c. World Service I money Chesterton this week we're taking another bite out of a topic with visited before sex but this time it's with a twist. Last year we made a crab science episode about why we have males and females and as we made that program we came across an intriguing animals that have the ability to alter their sex and we wanted more so on this episode prepared to meet the super male tilapia fish. Headline secretary for criminal action to complete the 3rd world North factor used to be growing in the Sunday Times through the mail could create a 1000000 Daily Telegraph not the present really big story at the time the question that originally set us on a journey of sexual discovery was sent in by listener do in Singapore he really wanted to know about a curious asymmetry in the system that makes us humans male or female every baby is made of an x. Chromosome from the egg from the mother the other half of your d.n.a. Is delivered by a sperm how come when these 2 Hobbes's zipped together how come your options are a human with 2 x. Chromosomes female or a human with one x. And one y. Male listener do wanted to know why don't you find y y males you can listen to the whole show by searching the crowd science back catalogue but the short answer is that the white crime is and is much smaller than the x. And the x. Holds a few genes that you need to stay alive at least that was our human centric conclusion do wasn't convinced and stayed in touch he'd read a piece of research that didn't fit with our conclusions like you may see a lot of Bob I met up with do in Singapore when I was there a few. Months ago we met at a fish market which may sound odd but bear with me it's all about to make sense what I was googling why why male research is well let me do the research paper about that the project a I division while I'm a while a female I didn't make it was by God by the difficulty so I hope you would cite one me so do found proof of a why why male but found the actual science paper draw in technical do we are happy to translate the research do has come across looks at a fish called to Latvia and describes how to engineer to be a fish in order to make the illusive why white male he challenged us to explain how on earth these why why males exist is the only guys doing research and why why males so without these visioning these guys is that the idea that what people want the Russians to me being not much used to do strikes fear into the hearts of the crowd science team we live to answer your science questions so here we have a mystery in our 1st program we concluded that you cannot make a human out of just why chromosomes and yet he's evidence of a y y too happy a fish let's recap what our expert said last time well the reason is because the x. Chromosome is it very very valuable chromosome and it's got lots of genes on it that she need to be alive Professor Jenny Graves from La Trobe University in Australia so if you don't have any experiments I mean you are dead very very early the y. Chromosome there is only 40 Janes all of it and then not required to be alive because otherwise we wouldn't have any females so a y. Chromosome is not much use in keeping you alive so terawatt chromosomes is not going to compensate for the lack of an x. Like you can be x. Y. Y. That's the problem. But you can't just be y.y. The white chromosome my picture of it is it's essentially a broken down x. Chromosome and there's practically nothing left and it could well suffer the same fate as it has in some rodents and disappear completely. Every new generation gives life the chance to shuffle genes it's like a dance where opposite has a primes and come together and swap turns out this is a good way of keeping the genes for head but over millions of years the y. Has deteriorated because there's no one to dance with the whole friendless why there are lots of reasons that the y. Chromosome has lost active genes because it is kind of isolated it doesn't have a partner that it can swap genes with like the x. Chromosome can swap genes with the other x. Chromosome in a female but r o y I can't do that and so I was isolated and isolated bits of the genome always at risk of mutations and deletions and so you do see a lot of deletions of the y. Chromosome and a lot of info trial men have a delay sions of one or other of 10 and so crucial genes on the y. Chromosome Now the thing that Bubba do about this conclusion is that tilapia fish have been genetically engineered to be y. Y. Remember what he told us so without these better than these guys is that the idea of these great people will be watching is to. Do is right scientists have made a y y too happy a fish sometimes dubbed super Miles how these fish even possible 1st off Bear in mind their fish and fish have some pretty unusual ways of making miles and females which will come to the same as in humans to Latvia have x. And y. Chromosomes x. X. Is a female fish and x. Y. Is a male. But some fish have found a much hotter way to determine sex. Tilapia their sex or temptation so whether they're male or female is largely depend on temperature that's Komi Robinson she says he will adjust at the University of swims in y. Olds and do's why why too happy a fish research was 1st done Swanzy to produce a y. Y. Tapia male they use a natural male a few days after its hatched they expose it to a lower temperature which means that the fish remains a male genetically However produces eggs just like a female and then what does that do to the males This enables the males to remain genetically a male so still have the x. In the y. Chromosome However they undergo physical changes to produce eggs meaning that they can be fertilized by another natural male at risk of being in delicate How do you get to my old lappie a fish to mate is it easy a lot of times not coach they don't actually let natural sort of mate and systems occur in the facilities so they tend to strip the females for eggs and strip the males for sperm and artificially inseminate the eggs that way Ok so there's no kind of courtship sexy dancing on the nose and I guess. So you've got these eggs weirdly from a male and then the sperm and then mix those up and then what do you get next generation so next generation you get the x. X. Females which you obviously would still have because you've got 2 X.'s there you get your natural x. Y. Males but as I said you also get your why why males and this is a kind of scream for this these are the individuals that they want to then go into the next stage to produce a whole culture of fish that just miles what proportion of them end up being why why only 25 percent end up being y. Y. So this is it enough at the 1st stage 1st generation to use these fish so they take these why why. And then they make them with a natural female which means the whole resulting population from that cross will all be x. Y. So actually the y. Y. Tilapia used to create a whole monoculture single culture of just pure natural my all fish Chloe was explaining how to make a y y fish but I think I need to see this again and so producer Louise has brought in a bunch of chocolate chocolate balls or Greenland's or orange ones and I've got some other ones that you can eat if you like excellence from my kind of science Ok so the green ones are what the green ones are extrem sense and the orange ones are y. Chromosomes yet Ok so if you pop a male or female into each of my hands Ok so you Female 2 greens and your male green in an orange Yeah and if you grab a chromosome from it so you want for Mummy one daddy that's how to make a baby I've got a green one and an orange one so I've made a boy you made a boy so we're now going to treat this mail with either temperature or who are most depending on what technology you're using to make this male produce eggs so let's pretend we've done that so you give me the male my right hand here Ok and you give me another male that he's going to breed with one male producing the eggs one male fertilising those eggs yet so now you can grab one of the 2 chromosomes so from one from each making maybe a orange Oh another orange one who I've got double orange as excellent is that that's not something I've seen before in our combos What is this if you are getting rich colors or. So what you've got there is 2 why chromosomes you basically made a super male What happens now is you give me the super male yep yep and then he's going to breed of a normal female so give me a female male or female 2 green ones 2 green. Yeah right there really sticky. So you want to go right to the hand should do you search Ok so it doesn't really matter which one I grab because I only have an orange from this is a male and I can only have a green from the normal male so what ever fish they come up with there's no kind of lottery to this is always going to be one orange one green which is one x. One y. Which is a normal male So all of the offspring are going to be male Yeah exactly I want to know why someone would want to do that and can we get Eric world Rick up on the line from fish Jen he's the man in Wales who made this happen if you eat all of these in the meantime you haven't read one of us eatable. And lo is that Eric it is indeed we're calling to pick your brains about lucky fish if that's all right yeah absolutely Eric Roderick is the managing director of the company fish Jen who back in the day worked with the scientists at the university on using tilapia fishes ability to change sex to make the 1st super male y. Wise Chloe said you can use heat to make male fish produce eggs fish Jen used female hormones to get the same effect. It took us around 10 years with probably 10 or 12 peers to students the masters students and a core team of 3 or 4 professors working at the university to develop this technology or who came up with the idea in the 1st place how did someone 1st decide to actually wouldn't be good if we had y. Y. My observation let me give you some background so tilapia think Peter's face as it's called globally because of the biblical connection was home was the biblical connection Pallant the this is the fish that was in the Lords and the fish is part of the know absolutely tilapia So that's the biblical connection and also all sort of 4000 years ago the ancient Egyptians were farming tilapia parsley they were quite favored by the pharaohs So it's got obviously great history and the other good thing about it is that these are the only fish that have been taken up to the International Space Station eggs were taken up and for you were actually have to get under the or gravity conditions so it's got it's got something to it is not just the r.r. Run of the Belfast really it's got a history and it's the 1st fish in space Yeah that's right absolutely Wow In the 1970s the to Latvia was championed as a miracle fish because it's cheap and nutritious but there was one problem with farming it if you breed loads of clappy of fish in a restricted space like a pond they tend not to grow very big not great for the farmer you want big fat ones and that brings us back to the benefit of having all my own populations males grow bigger and faster than the females plus breeding is controlled entirely by the farmer that was the idea and it's worked well ever since and you said it took about 10 years and a bunch of professors and ph d. Students to make this happen and were there any reactions at the time to making in animal with this odd combination of chromosomes well at the time. I assume it caused quite a stir we had all the newspapers and all the t.v. Channels came down to interview us and everything else there was really really quite a buzz at the time we had headlines sex discrimination the can feed the 3rd world Fish Called Wanda No sex please we're growing in the Sunday Times super male farm fish could feed millions Daily Telegraph You know this was a really big story at the time but no one ever be was thinking this is the way forward so where have these fish gone out to we've exported to over 50 countries from Swanzy just to give you an idea in 20176500000 tons of to the poor but was produced with a global value of $12000000000.00 u.s. Dollars and as anyone looked down and gone oh I wonder if we can do this with other species yet we keep getting asked if it can be done with other species I think that is quite a good possibility that it could be done with some species certainly but with sloppier particularly the idea is that they the sex of the fry when their 1st born is a little bit plastic so for our 1st months there is a possibility of changing the sex from male to female and vice versa to nap here is clearly a big industry and that success comes down to the fish's flexibility to change that extra mile to female Well keeping its sex chromosomes the same. Aren't left questioning why some species can do this and others can't there seems to be a spectrum of how much the y. Chromosome has fallen apart some species like mice have almost nonexistent Kremas and others like to not be a fish seem to have them so complete that you can form a functioning male using 2 wise. You're listening to crown science from the b.b.c. World Service and on this episode we're talking about animals that can change sex and we're not done yet there are still other ways and other species out there let me introduce you to an expert on sex changing fish molecular biologist Erica Todd from the University of Otago New Zealand exchanges it's remarkably common we're talking about hundreds of species but this capacity many social ray fish is change sex so we're talking about most wrestlers also group of parrot fish for example things all change sex from female to male and that's most common but there's other species as well that can change sex from male to female anatomy fishes are a great example so finding name or the plotline of that movie will have been very different if it was biologically accurate namers dad would have would have changed sex and become his monkey. Another sex changing fish that rose to fame in the t.v. Series Blue Planet 2 is the culprit die fish the alpha female sees a vacant position at the top of the hierarchy and goes for it it's a smart move because this way she should we say the new male gets to pass on his her genes by breeding with a Hari females there's a male defending a territory of those females and then aggregate there to mate with him so when this male is gone but typically the largest female will change sex to replace him it's super quick in the species within minutes the sex changing female will show aggression she'll start courting the other females and then the process will go on from there we're we're seeing hormonal changes from estrogens to testosterone we're seeing a healthy ovary start to degenerate and is completely replaced. While functional tests fish as a group are remarkably diverse in the ways that sex is determined and that development happens. We've mainly been focusing on fish in this show but they aren't the only ones to hack the sex sex change has been observed in Dragon lizards butterflies coral birds and frogs sometimes the sex change is less deliberate the poor common read frog is known to change from female to male after being exposed to pesticides. On other occasions we humans aren't to blame let me take you to an aviary in the south of England it belongs to bird in T.V.'s Nick and my producer Luisa and I paid him a visit because in his bird collection is a very special female dog one that's transitioning into a male without her chair from Asia from the Antarctic South America North America all over your Russia you've got the black swans from Australia so we don't personalize the place it's a strange old Levi I love it if you always had dogs but what is it about when. I don't I don't really look like a normal but. A lot of people what do you mean 6 plus I got a huge sack 6 with 3 all of Nick's birds a special to him but we are here for one particular duck formally a dowdy brown color Michael female Mandarin ducks she's now starting to sprout the beautiful bright feathers of a male Mandarin duck. He wanted to see the Mandarin didn't you yeah let me see if I can point out you see the goose on the left if you look slightly to the right yeah the mandarins not into the oval one Yeah the one to the right there is the female with the South as the brown one you'll ring side was that the difference between her and a normal. If we conform to normal but it was like the chatting she's got the red bake which is what the mild stuff and she has to say was on a lot of my old stuff the females don't carry the red bake and don't carry the styles it's sort of they can just sort of and then I could just feel that yeah they know they're nibbling my height it's a good. To find out why next Mandarin duck is making the transition we spoke to Tim Burke head professor of zoology at the University of Sheffield It seems we aren't the 1st to be puzzled by the phenomena birds that appear to change sex of puzzled ordinary people biologists for a long time in the seventy's eighty's John Hunter had a piano or knew of a piano turned into a peacock and then a contemporary of Charles Darwin William youall decided to make this a topic of research for himself using pheasants and when he does sector these 1st he found that all those female pheasants that it started to become male or had become male had diseased ovaries What's the ovary doing the ovary in a female is obviously producing Eastridge and in a female bird East region helps to ensure that she produces female plumage and a female who's ovaries a diseased stops producing East region than the kind of default option is for male plumage to develop does she just look like a male or can she actually mate with a female and produce offspring in a very few cases those females that turn into males also develop testes and start producing sperm but it's relatively rare but it in some cases it is a complete transformation. It's the start of the mating season and our sex changing duck is already paired with her male partner producer Luisa wondered what would happen to the devoted couple. Chatted Well if you look she's not in she says we have a Stephanie paddock and he's telling everyone off to stay away from a girl they mate they would try and make these Pedre and say 3 things she's a girl but what she's youth is so he still thinks she's her behavior is like a girl yes he's not acting like a boy she's acting like a go well the plucky pair stayed together is this a tale of love conquering all I ask but expert Tim Birkhead without change. Really I'm pretty sure he's eventually going to go on all the something going all the I'm not sure this is the best arrangement I could make I think I can do better. That's a shame because I'd I built this entire analogy on there's kind of you know she'd grown a beard and he was like No no she's my woman sticking with her but basically it gets to a certain point and he goes. Well that's a really interesting question and I'm not sure anybody's ever actually looked to see what happens but my prediction would be that as she becomes more and more like her appearance and realize this is not going to get anywhere he will separate from and find a regular female This is science we don't do happily ever after Mandarin ducks don't seem to change sex on purpose it's a disease that tampers with their homes and sets them down a path to my own list which they have latent in them definitely a different story then with the fish that change sex in very regulated and strict circumstances now there are other birds that have hacked the system Tim told me about a particular sneaky one called a rough these birds are very sexually dimorphic the males are much bigger than females much more lobert plumage and they're very promiscuous and mate on what's called a leg so males congregate to display that wonderful rough plumage and females visit that in order to copulate. The phenolic for rough says there's a 3rd genetic type known as a farce a Dutch name which is genetically male but actually has female plumage and that seems to have evolved in order to explore this lake mating systems so the ordinary males congregate all alike which is a bit of open ground and they display and they wait for females to turn up and if they're lucky one of the females will make them these farther males basically their female mimics hang around on the leg and then one of the order email is distracted by something they can zip in and copulate with the female and sneaky very sneaky and they have enormous testes and vast numbers of sperm that make those occasional sneaky opportunistic matings disproportionally successful and roughs also have facial warts as a sign of sexual attractiveness I was reading in your book you know alongside this elaborate plumage Yes they've got this funny kind of watery skin around the base of the beak very striking it's better probably. I think people people have looked more up the plumage and less of the warts Professor Tim Birkhead telling us about the water gender fluid rough. In one of his novels writer Kurt Vonnegut suggested the existence of 7 sexes each one essential to reproduction in ways we haven't yet realized that might seem a little fanciful but science keeps uncovering species we need in wonderful approaches to survival we've heard about some of the mechanisms and explored why why tilapia fish the listener Do we haven't found him a why why human male and in fact in 5000000 years the y. Chromosome in humans might be gone together. It's the diversity of ways of making sexes means that if we're still about then our biology will probably have found some new way of shuffling our d.n.a. Reproducing and evolving I don't dare predict what it is that's it for this edition of Crabbe science if you have a question that you'd like us to tackle please do e-mail us on crowd science at b.b.c.
