In most places where metro viaducts are erected, traffic flows on both sides of the median. With the median at the centre, the space remains unutilised. With the portal pier design, traffic will flow on both sides and under the viaduct. The central lane under the twin flyover near Doddanekundi is expected to be completed soon and is likely to be open to traffic by next week.
Experts tend to agree that as of now, the underpasses are not safe as they haven’t been constructed properly. Civil engineering expert MN Sreehari told BM, “When there is a design fault in them, they cannot be deemed safe. The fault needs to be rectified. The slope in underpasses is deep, leading to waterlogging and difficulty in draining the water. To maintain an adequate slope, extra length needs to be given on either side but that will ramp up costs. The ideal slope should be of 1:50 gradient.”
Recently, officials from Mahadevapura had said that the underpass had been free from flooding for a long time and commuters were able to pass through the stretch easily. However, with Monday’s waterlogging, many commuters have started to question the poor infrastructure and improper drainage system at the ORR - a place dotted with IT companies
