Fossils found in rugged mountainous terrain in Canada’s Northwest Territories may give a glimpse at the humble dawn of animal life on Earth – sea sponges that inhabited primordial reefs built by bacteria roughly 890 million years ago. A Canadian researcher said on Wednesday the fossils, dating to a time called the Neoproterozoic Period, appear to show distinctive microstructures from the body of a sea sponge built similarly to a species living today called the Mediterranean bath sponge, or Spongia officinalis. If this interpretation is correct, these would be the oldest fossils of animal life by roughly 300 million years.

The pink granite ledges of Maine's Mount Desert Island in Acadia National Park.
Hiking solo above Maine’s Cranberry Islands, I remember the summer my grandparents taught me how to play poker. When Grandpa Tom folded to a bet from either Grandma Betsy or Mrs. Paulsen, their pretty friend from up the road in Mahopac, N.Y., he’d say, “She obviously has a full blouse.” If he knocked over chips or spilled some beer, he’d mutter, “This gawdamn dropsy again.” The joke I didn’t get was that dropsy was short for hydropsy, a heart swollen by excess water, but he used it to explain why he dropped things, as if he had the shakes.

With adolescents now cleared to get a COVID-19 vaccine, Leo Albuquerque, 14, of Westford got some support from his mother, Carolina, as he was given the shot Thursday in Lowell.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday that those fully vaccinated for COVID-19 can stop wearing masks in most indoor and outdoor settings, though Massachusetts and some other states said they would keep their local restrictions in place for now.
President Biden and federal officials lauded the announcement as a major turning point in the country’s fight against the virus, even as some medical experts questioned its timing and cautioned that masks will remain a part of daily life for some time to come.

CVS, Walgreens to resume administering Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine

CVS and Walgreens will resume administering Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine this week.Health regulators recommended a pause in giving the company’s one-dose shots as they investigated rare but serious cases of blood clots in women who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The pause was lifted on Friday after a warning was added to help women decide if they wanted to receive the shot. Massachusetts is expected to receive about 4,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson shots this week, according to the Boston Globe. The state re-authorized the use of the vaccine Friday night not long after the pause was lifted by the CDC. Federal health leaders hope the process will increase confidence in the vaccine."The CDC and the FDA are the gold standard for both safety and the evaluation of efficacy. I think in the long run what we are going to see, and we will probably see it soon, is that people will realize that we take safety very seriously," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Biden administration’s top medical adviser on the pandemic.Massachusetts is one of more than 30 states now resuming use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.Massachusetts vaccination progressNew data is typically published daily around 5 p.m. and weekly reports are typically released on Thursdays, also around 5 p.m.

11 Weirdest Taxes Other Countries Have To Pay

11 Weirdest Taxes Other Countries Have To Pay

Taxes are no fun – or are they? Some are certainly entertaining when you consider how offbeat they are. For example, there are plenty of strange U.S. taxes — ranging from a tattoo tax in Arkansas to a blueberry tax in Maine.

                         Junk Food Tax in Hungary
If you want a snack in Hungary, better reach for an apple instead of a bag of chips. Otherwise, you’ll have to pay the country’s junk food tax, which is officially called the public health product tax. The tax is on packaged snacks that are high in salt and sugar — as well as sodas and energy drinks — and adds about 20 cents to the price of these items, according to the Boston Globe. The tax was introduced to reduce “consumption of food products that are not useful from a public health point of view and to promote a healthy diet,” according to a study by Hungary’s National Institute for Food and Nutrition Science and World Health Organization. It seems to be working because the study found that 59% to 73% of consumers reduced their consumption of the taxed items.

My mother's old travel diary took me on journeys abroad and to the past

The writer’s mother on a cruise.
“Yesterday afternoon we played bingo in the ship’s lounge. Actually, it felt like we made a donation to the Bingo Foundation of America,” Mom wrote in her red leather travel diary while on a cruise through Alaska’s Inside Passage. “After dinner, they put on a slide show. Talk about a mob scene. The audience was right out of Port Authority Bus Terminal.”
Mom’s stinging wit and stiletto-sharp observations, written in her identifiable sloped scrawl, kindled memories of the amusing, bright 79-year-old woman who died 26 years ago. In photographs on my desk, I see her face and even remember the purple blouse she wore that day. So much else is fuzzy.
