National calls for stronger gun control legislation have prompted some Swain County residents to ask commissioners to make the county a 2nd Amendment sanctuary. Donna Cole brought forward almost 1000 signatures to the commission in support of the resolution in March. Cole said that citizens need to be able to defend themselves.
“If you take the weapons away from the regular people, then the only people that are going to have weapons are the criminals,” said Cole, who is 66.
The petition started before the two mass shootings in March in Atlanta and Bolder. Cole explained that “illegal” immigrants, BLM and ANTIFA are groups that she is concerned about.

WCU Faculty Asks Board Of Trustees For Cost Of Living Increase

Lilly Knoepp
Today, Western Carolina University Faculty Senate presented the Board of Trustees with a request: they need a salary increase.
“They asked a lot of questions so that was super positive,” said Kadance Otto, chair of the Faculty Senate.
Otto said faculty hasn’t received seen their pay increase in line with cost-of-living since 2008.
“To me, a raise is something above the cost of living because that is something that is more than the average rate of inflation. So at bare minimum we are simply asking to keep up with inflation,” said Otto.
Faculty pay comes from the North Carolina state legislature since Western Carolina is part of the UNC system. The faculty and staff are state employees. Western Carolina acknowledged this relationship in a statement and thanked the legislature for being a good partner through funding of recent programs like NC Promise and other capital funds including the steam plant and new STEM building.

COVID in Appalachia: Teachers Share Their Pandemic Journey

Alicia Kilby: *laughing*
John Kilby: Oh, gosh. As a teacher, I feel like the best learning experience is going to be actually attending a classroom. The quality of that one-on-one, you know, being in front of someone while they’re giving instruction-you’re just trying to learn things. It’s hard to do in a virtual setting. Some people can handle it, but…
Alicia Kilby: I will openly admit that I struggled because you guys know as my past students, I’m super social. It was very hard for me to be in a virtual classroom and not have that interaction where I can tell you, like, check your attitude Zain, like, I really did miss that face-to-face interaction. I think our house is probably more organized than it’s ever been, just because I start on one side and go to the other side just waiting on someone to tune in and need something on the computer, it was-I didn’t like it. I personally struggled with it.

Best Picture Voting Explained: How the Oscars Count the Votes

Best Picture Voting Explained: How the Oscars Count the Votes
AMPAS voting has opened, and it's important for members to fill out their ballots fully.
Clayton Davis, provided by
FacebookTwitterEmail
Oscar voting is kicking off, and 366 films are vying for the Academy’s attention for best picture, in addition to their selections in their respective branches. One important note to Academy members: Fill out your ballots in full.
Every Academy member votes for best picture, outside of their respective branch association. For best picture, the member is invited to list up to five films in preferential order. In the days of paper ballots, there were horror stories of voters writing the same film five times on their entries, but those days are gone with electronic voting. However, listing five films is crucially important based on the Academy tabulation methods, which involves a lot of math. As we remain in the final year of the “sliding scale,” where the results can produce any number of nominees between five and 10, simply put, all lines matter.
