RoboCop statue after 10 years of work. The Metro Times caught up with Brandon Walley and Jerry Paffendorf to talk about the project they began in 2011. The story goes that some Detroit resident told the city’s mayor, Dave Bing, that they needed a
RoboCop statue. From there, the duo crowdfunded an effort to build the monument and raised $17,000 in just three days. Fred Barton Productions helped with a design of the character and then the delays hit. It turns out a giant metal statue is wildly expensive, but the team kept plugging away. Giorgio Gikas stepped in to help deliver the final product. There were structural integrity issues, along with the artist having to beat cancer which held things up for years.

Ten years after a crowdsourcing campaign raised money for a Detroit RoboCop statue, the two-ton bronze work is complete and ready to stand guard in the city — though it does not yet have a home.
An update on the art piece and a nostalgic dive into how it came to be land the cover of this week's issue of the Metro Times. The campaign led by filmmaker Brandon Walley and Loveland Technologies CEO Jerry Paffendorf raised $67,000 from 2,700 people across the globe, money that went toward commissioning Venus Bronze Works' Giorgio Gikas to make the statue.

Okay, I have to be real here...when I first saw this headline I was SURE it was an Onion article. After all, discovering that Detroit finally has a long awaited, long anticipated Robocop statue sounds made up. At least to this former Floridian.
It is, in fact, a real story that I found on Metrotimes.com. Now, as someone who is brand new to Michigan I hope you can understand why I've never heard of this. After all, most days my news feed was filled with dumb Floridians doing dumb Floridian things. However, just in case some of my fellow Michiganders were unaware of this dedication to a popular film character, here's how this all started and why it took so long to complete.
