Sam Darnold Is Getting Everything He Never Received in New York

When the New York Jets traded Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers earlier this offseason, it was easy to hand the former USC standout the "bust" label. New York drafted Darnold third overall in 2018 to be the franchise's savior...

NFL Rookies Who Won't Start in 2021 but Definitely Should

That doesn't mean it's the right decision.
A year ago, the Los Angeles Chargers weren't going to start quarterback Justin Herbert, but an injury to Tyrod Taylor threw him to the wolves. He responded well, to say the least, throwing 31 touchdown passes against 10 interceptions with eight 300-plus-yard games behind a bad offensive line.
Not every example will work out so spectacularly. But rookies, especially quarterbacks, need to be out there, getting as many reps as possible to adapt to the pro game quickly. It also benefits the team to get the most usage out of those cheap first five years of the contract—and recent breakouts like Herbert, Josh Allen and Joe Burrow suggest that more than ever, rookie passers are arriving ready for the modern game.

NFL Draft 2021 Results: The Biggest Steals, Reaches & Surprises from Day 1

Tony Dejak/Associated Press
If you're an NFL draft viewer, three short phrases likely dominate your living room during Round 1 every year.
1. "That's a steal!"
2. "That's a reach!"
3. "That's a surprise!"
Steals, of course, are players who should have come off the board earlier than they did. Reaches are players in the opposite circumstance. Surprises are, well, surprises—sometimes positive, sometimes negative, always unexpected by definition.
With that in mind, let's review the opening round of the 2021 draft through those lenses.
Steal: Atlanta Falcons Select Florida TE Kyle Pitts Fourth Overall

A tight end is drafted in the top four for the first time in modern NFL history, and we're calling it a steal? Yup, because Kyle Pitts is so much more than a typical tight end. He's arguably the top non-quarterback in this class.

2021 NFL Draft: List of Top Prospects, Sleepers and Final 1st-Round Mocks

Brian Blanco/Associated Press
After months of anticipation, projections and predictions, the 2021 NFL draft has arrived. A wave of fresh talent will be entering the league during the first round Thursday night.
By this point, most football fans know what names to expect to hear called early in the draft. It's highly unlikely that any player other than Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is the first one taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars to kick off draft night.
But there are always trades and surprises during the NFL draft, especially during the opening round. There won't be anybody who correctly predicts each of the first 32 selections. And some sleeper prospects will emerge during the latter half of the round.

B/R NFL Scouting Dept. 2021 Final Mock Draft

Alijah Vera-Tucker is the top guard on the board, and while this may be a little early for him, the Panthers have a major need at the position, so securing a true plug-and-play starter to bolster the line would be a wise move.
Vera-Tucker has proven that he can play tackle if needed, while guard is where his ceiling is highest as a refined, technically sound player with scheme versatility. He also has plenty of room to grow considering he turns 22 in June.
Carolina has struggled on the O-line due to a lack of depth and injuries, so Vera-Tucker would not only insulate them against both issues but also dramatically upgrade last year's primary starter at left guard, Chris Reed, whom they let walk in free agency.

A 2021 Draft-Day Trade That Makes Sense for Every NFL Team

Brian Blanco/Associated Press
If the early moves are any indication, the 2021 NFL draft should feature some blockbuster trades.
Several major deals have already sent shockwaves across the NFL. The San Francisco 49ers jumped from No. 12 to No. 3 by sending a trio of first-rounders to the Miami Dolphins, only for Miami to jump back up to No. 6. The quarterback-needy Carolina Panthers acquired Sam Darnold from the New York Jets, which all but guarantees the first three picks will be quarterbacks.
And that feels like a mere preview of what's to come.
The big trade speculation starts with the fourth pick, but players will be on the move, too. Baltimore just shipped star tackle Orlando Brown Jr. to the Kansas City Chiefs, after all.
