SAN DIEGO, April 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- PriceSmart, Inc. (NASDAQ: PSMT), operator of 47 warehouse clubs in 12 countries and one U.S. territory, today announced its results of operations for the fiscal second quarter of 2021 which ended on February 28, 2021.
Comments from
Sherry S. Bahrambeygui, Chief Executive Officer:
"PriceSmart achieved solid results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2021, with continued focus on strengthening our Company as a trusted part of our members' lives. The quarter started with the grand opening of our new Usaquén Club, our third club in the greater metropolitan area of Bogotá which is located in the heart of a densely populated area. We believe that the Usaquén Club should drive sales growth, provide greater convenience and strengthen our presence in a market that provides significant growth opportunity. In addition, in late February and early March, we launched our first two PriceSmart Pharmacies in Costa Rica. We believe that this incremental membership benefit will be well received and complements our Optical service. We plan to launch several more PriceSmart Pharmacies by the end of the calendar year. Additionally, we continue to invest in our omni-channel efforts to improve service and offer greater convenience to our Members.

Semifinalist Teams Selected in $10M ANA Avatar XPRIZE Competition
Tuesday, April 6, 2021 3:30PM IST (10:00AM GMT)
38 semifinalist teams from 16 countries will aim to create an avatar system that can transport human presence to a remote location instantly.

Los Angeles, United States:

XPRIZE, the world’s leader in designing and operating incentive competitions to solve humanity’s grand challenges, announced today that 38 teams from 16 countries are advancing to the semifinals round of the $10M ANA Avatar XPRIZE competition.

Sponsored by All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan’s largest airline, the Avatar XPRIZE is a four-year global competition focused on the development of an avatar system that will deploy a human’s senses, actions, and presence to a remote location in real time, leading to a more connected world. These avatars must demonstrate the ability to execute tasks across a variety of real-world scenarios and convey a sense of presence for both the operator and the recipient in those interactions. In the future, avatars could help provide critical care and deploy immediate responses in emergency situations, or offer opportunities for exploration and new ways of collaboration, stretching the boundaries of what is possible and maximizing the impact of skill and knowledge sharing.

Plus, there are less processed foods, and abundantly healthy choices of locally grown fruits, vegetables, organic eggs, and endless seafood and grass-fed beef. It is no surprise to hear reports about expats having shed unwanted weight, taking fewer prescription drugs, and overall better fitness of mind, body, and soul.

ARAUQUITA, Colombia —
Clashes that began over the weekend between Venezuela’s military and a Colombian armed group in a community along the nations’ shared border have continued, prompting more Venezuelans to seek refuge in a nearby Colombian community, international monitoring groups said Thursday.
Colombian officials said more than 3,900 people have now moved from Venezuela to northeast Colombia, about 800 more than Wednesday. The children and adults are in eight shelters set up to host them.
“It was reported that families continue to flee across the border in search of safety as the violence in the area has not completely stopped,” said Dominika Arseniuk, the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Country Director in Colombia. “People we have spoken with are terrified and fear for their lives.”

The Colombian government on Wednesday said 3,100 people have moved from Venezuela to Colombia since Sunday in search of protection from the conflict in the border state of Apure, Venezuela. Authorities in Colombia have set up eight shelters to host the influx of people.
“On Sunday, the inhabitants of the municipality of Arauquita woke up (hearing) explosions, machine guns, gunshots, with a very complex situation,” said Etelivar Torres Vargas, the mayor of Arauquita, the northeast Colombia municipality where the immigrants are seeking refuge. “The prognosis is that more Venezuelan citizens, the elderly, children, pregnant women will continue to arrive, there is a humanitarian crisis.”

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Cranky Network Awards

If you missed last night’s Cranky Network Awards presented by Ontario International Airport, you missed one heck of a show. But hey, don’t feel too sad about it. After all, you can still watch a replay of the 40 minute show right here whenever you’re ready.
Courtney Miller from Visual Approach Analytics and I spent a lot of time trying to craft categories that would be positive in nature while still making sure we kept some of the usual Cranky snark. It was a fine line, and we hope you agree that we were able to walk that tightrope. With so much that went into the creation of this, I thought it might be interesting to walk through the show and talk about decisions we made and how we made them.

ABOUT THE MISSION
In Venezuela, people are faced with hyperinflation, struggle to find necessities, lack of medicines and access to medical services in addition to a rise in crime rates. Many Colombians, formerly settled in Venezuela have decided to go back home while many Venezuelans chose to migrate to major cities in Colombia or to transit through them during their journey to other countries in the region. Duque announces restrictions to curb coronavirus surge during Easter

Photo: Richard Emblin
President Iván Duque during his evening coronavirus update to the nation announced new restrictions for the Easter holidays.  The heightened measures go into effect from March 26 to 29 and March 31 to April 5. March 30 has been exempted as it falls in the middle of the two-week recess.
The nationwide measures are being introduced to contain a spike in new infections after the experience of Christmas and New Years when the country witnessed a surge in the second wave of coronavirus. A third wave sweeping across Europe, and which has led governments to reimpose or extend existing lockdowns, as well as the spread of highly infectious variants, are the main reason why Colombia wants to restrict movement during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year.
