Fonterra's $60m treatment plan sticks close to home at factory

Fonterra said the plant was crucial to reduce nitrogen on the farms where it irrigated wastewater from the 115-year-old Hautapu factory on the outskirts of Cambridge.
It came under fire from a
RNZ investigation which revealed nitrates from the irrigation farms may have leached into the private water bores of nearby residents.
The dairy company irrigated wastewater on eight nearby farms.
It owned three, Bruntwood, Buxton and Bardowie farms, which had no stock but were used as “cut and carry” operations, using the wastewater to grow grass crops for farmers.

It was on his runs that Neville Ross first noticed cows were slowly disappearing from local farms. In 2017 most of the stock vanished from two farms. A year later they disappeared from a third Cambridge farm.
"Some places you realise there's no animals - at all - for like a year."
Neville's not a farmer, he's a cop and has been part of Waikato's police force for 42 years. Despite being a detective sergeant, when the working dairy farms became ghost farms, it didn't weigh on his mind. All three were owned by Fonterra. If it was a case of cattle-rustling or alien abduction, the multi-national dairy giant would have sounded the alarm.

Residents plan to oppose latest Fonterra wastewater plant plan in Waikato

Residents say there are more people living near the dairy factory now compared to when it started operating many years ago in Hautapu.
It held meetings with those living near the factory and also met strong opposition.
Residents, in a statement, said there were many people who lived just a few hundred metres from the factory.
More than 50 families and businesses would be affected whereas at the previous Fencourt, Buxton Farm site, the closest neighbour was 750 meters.
Hautapu community spokesperson Grant Enyon said the Fonterra factory had been a good neighbour over the years.
”We have lived in harmony and the factory is one of the oldest, it’s been here a long time.
