Yelo Bahn Mi Debuts, Thirteen Opens in Midtown

For the banh mi baguette, Lam devoted a great deal of time searching for the perfect bread while creating a tasty pate and rich garlic aioli to elevate the banh mi experience. Instead of the traditional carrot and daikon garnish, Lam and Yeung developed a more expensive and tastier adornment of house pickled carrot and papaya. Happy Farms of Texas, a one-woman operation out of Katy,  provides the chefs with fresh herbs and produce for the restaurant.
The beverage choices are just as thoughtful with fresh-pressed juices, ube and pandan lattes and Vietnamese iced coffees made with New Orleans' coffee of choice, Cafe du Monde.  The espresso-based drinks will be made with beans from Double Barrel Coffee Roaster, a small batch operation in Missouri City.

Restaurants Rise Again from the Winter Storm

Houstonians are a hardy bunch of folks but this past winter storm coupled with an ongoing pandemic and political back-biting about energy has some of us ready to throw in the towel. One of the hardest hit industries is the hospitality sector with restaurants, cafes, bars and food purveyors falling victim to not only the weather but power outages and water issues that had many of them closings their doors this week.
Most of our restaurants have reopened in some form or another. Some are doing only take-away. Others are offering dine-in, a welcome respite for those who have eaten weenie-beanies and canned tuna for the past week. While many are back to offering their full menus, others may have limited menu items due to supply issues. Some restaurants have had to discard thousands of dollars worth of food and drink because of the storm. This is a time for us all to practice a little patience as we support our local businesses. Though many of us are experiencing financial difficulties of our own, using some ingenuity with take-out meals can mean stretching a dollar to its limit while supporting our favorite eatery.

2020 Favorite Houston Food & Drink, Part 8: Cocktails & Spirits

Welcome to the eighth part of a series where we showcase the noteworthy food and drink experiences of a very weird year. In the spirit of the holidays, it's also a very special collaboration between the food writers of the Houston Press and Houston Food Finder, the online publication founded by former Houston Press restaurant critic and food editor Phaedra Cook. This eighth edition covers some of our writers' favorite cocktails and spirits. Part nine will cover some of the important organizations that have helped hospitality workers survive this difficult year.

For a town with a brewery on seemingly every corner, Houston had, until recently, suffered from a distinct lack of local distilleries. Luckily, that has changed a bit in recent years with a handful of notable spirits producers popping up around town.

Best Houston Music Releases of 2020

It is difficult to write about 2020 and avoid cliche, but we'll try. After all, while the world seemingly fell apart, it actually just kept turning. Most of us, if only out of sheer necessity, simply carried on. Those of us who could, kept working. We got up each day and plugged away, at times through a fog of uncertainty, fiscal and existential anxiety.
One thing that kept many of us going was music. From protest anthems like Lil Baby's "The Bigger Picture" to the internet-breaking "WAP" and Taylor Swift's surprise magnum opus
Folklore, music was often the conduit through which we experienced and coped with a historically traumatizing year.
