Alex Garcia Leaves Maplewood Church After 3½ Years As ICE Decides Not To Deport Him

For the first time in 3½ years, Alex Garcia on Wednesday left Christ Church United Church of Christ in Maplewood. Garcia, a Honduran immigrant, had taken sanctuary in the church from immigration authorities that ordered him deported.

Alex Garcia, the Honduran immigrant who sought sanctuary in a Maplewood Church nearly 3½ years ago, went home Wednesday.
“I am no longer a priority of deportation,” Garcia said to loud cheers as he left Christ Church United Church of Christ.

Alex Garcia, an undocumented immigrant from Honduras who has been living in a Maplewood church for more than three-and-a-half years to avoid deportation, left the church at 3 p.m. Wednesday after federal authorities committed to not enforcing his deportation.
Garcia is no longer a priority for deportation for Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE, the St. Louis Inter-Faith Committee on Latin America announced Wednesday. The agency has “unequivocally stated that it will not be pursuing Alex’s detention or removal,” the IFCLA said.
Garcia, from Poplar Bluff, has been living at Christ Church United Church of Christ, 2200 Bellevue Ave., Maplewood. Supporters were planning to gather with masks and social distancing at 3 p.m. as the Garcia family leaves the church.

Alex Garcia, who fled Honduras in 2004 and entered the US by stowing away on a train to Missouri, took refuge in the Christ Church United Church of Christ in the St Louis suburbs in 2017.
It made him one of dozens of people to take such sanctuary during the Trump era, but while President Biden is slowly unwinding his predecessor's policies, hundreds of deportations have still been taking place since the January 20 inauguration.
