Apple
stock received a thumbs up Friday from Loop Capital analyst Ananda Baruah, who repeated his Buy rating on the tech giant and boosted his target price to $155 from $131. The call comes ahead of the company’s upcoming December quarter earnings report, due after the close on Jan. 27.
Baruah writes in a research note that he expects a “really big year” for Apple (ticker: AAPL), and the signs should be clear with the upcoming earnings report. He thinks there could be material upside to Street numbers for both the near term and throughout calendar 2021, driven by strength in both iPhones and Macs. Baruah also thinks the company could see upside from healthy growth in iPad, AirPod, Watch, and Services.

Apple to Open Developer Academy, Provide Funding for Minority Entrepreneurs

Updated Jan. 13, 2021 4:08 pm ET
Apple Inc. is launching several projects to extend education and funding opportunities to minority entrepreneurs, part of the $100 million pledge it made in June to help combat racism in response to the national outcry over the killing of George Floyd.
The iPhone maker on Wednesday said it would open a software-developer academy in Detroit later this year and launch two venture-funding initiatives for young “Black and Brown entrepreneurs,” with the goal of helping to build the next generation of diverse leaders.
“We are all accountable to the urgent work of building a more just, more equitable world,” Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said. “And these new projects send a clear signal of Apple’s enduring commitment.”

Apple has a penchant for disruption. It completely reinvented the way we think about computers, smartphones, and personal tech devices—and how they all interact with one another. If the company’s past achievements are any indicator, an Apple car would momentous for the auto industry.

China's Chip-Independence Goals Helped by U.S.-Developed Tech

Jan. 11, 2021 9:31 am ET
A U.S.-born approach to defining how computer processors work presents a potential steppingstone to chip independence for Chinese tech companies that face growing limits from Washington on buying American semiconductors.
The so-called RISC-V technology offers an openly accessible approach to running the brains that power personal computers, smartphones and servers. It is an emerging rival to two, long-dominant proprietary models from Intel Corp. and Arm Holdings Ltd., a British company that U.S. graphics-chip maker Nvidia Inc. agreed in September to acquire for $40 billion.
The standard is winning global interest, and early users include Chinese online retail and tech giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. , which developed what some industry insiders consider the highest-performance RISC-V chip in production. Alibaba has said it is using that chip in its data centers to perform artificial intelligence calculations, and is selling versions of it.
