Rémy Julienne, who has died aged 90 after contracting Covid-19, was one of the world’s greatest film stunt drivers and coordinators. He was behind the unforgettable sequence in The Italian Job featuring red, white and blue Mini Coopers speeding away from a daring heist in Turin and went on to mastermind vehicle theatrics in half a dozen James Bond movies.
The 1969 British-flag-flying crime caper’s most memorable scenes began with the getaway cars driving through shopping arcades, then down the steps of the Gran Madre di Dio church while avoiding a wedding party. Later, as the Mini drivers – with stunt doubles – continued to outwit police in cars and on motorcycles, Julienne went beyond his brief and Troy Kennedy Martin’s script during the location shooting.

Bullitt (1968) with Steve McQueen achieving liftoff in his Ford Mustang along the terraced streets of San Francisco;
The French Connection (1971), with Gene Hackman terrorising blocks of Brooklyn pedestrian traffic in a Pontiac LeMans; and
Ronin (1998), with Robert De Niro behind the screeching wheels of a Peugeot in Paris.

One of the world's leading stuntmen, Remy Julienne, who worked on six James Bond films as well as the 1969 classic 'The Italian Job', has died from Covid-19 aged 90, friends and family said on Friday.
A veteran of more than 1,400 films and TV commercials as an actor or stunt coordinator, Julienne had been in intensive care in a hospital in his home town of Montargis in central France since early January.
'What was bound to happen has happened. He left us early in the evening (Thursday). It was predictable, he was on a respirator,' a relative told AFP.
