Weekend Family Fun: Black History Month, Holiday Celebrations, and More

February 5, 2021
The weekend is here! Ready for some fun? There are plenty of things to do whether you stay in or head outdoors. Check out these activities happening this weekend!
Now through the end of the month, Maplewood Village Alliance and Springfield Avenue Partnership will present Walk of Heroes this month in honor of Black History Month. Walk of Heroes Education Program features educational posters of 25 notable African American Historical Figures from past and present on display in Maplewood’s Village and Springfield Avenue Storefronts. This is a free, self-walking tour.
Visit Theilke Arboretum (460 Doremus Avenue, Glen Rock) will host StoryWalk. Enjoy the story “Winter Snow” as you and your child walk through the arboretum. The story begins at the playground entrance at the pool parking lot. The StoryWalk will be up throughout the winter. Enjoy the outdoor reading experience over and over. Madison NJ Rose City supplied England's queens, lives on

Totty the Englishman
Among them was Charles Totty, an Englishman who in 1896 moved to Madison to work on the Twombly estate (now home to Fairleigh Dickinson University). Totty, then 23, eventually opened his own greenhouses, operated a retail store in New York City and sold throughout the region through a mail-order catalog, according to his New York Times obituary. To promote it all, he organized the first of the city’s long-dormant International Flower Shows in 1913.
Totty grafted his own specialty Australian chrysanthemums and tea rose hybrids and sold them to Rose City's growers. Among them was Joseph Ruzicka, Coultas’ grandfather. Ruzicka ran a 65,000-plant greenhouse through Madison's most productive years.

Noe Pond Club in Chatham Township has sold and members mourn

Morristown Daily Record
A tiny, pristine swimming hole that has played a variety of significant roles in the lives of Morris County residents since before the American Revolution may finally give way to development.
The family owners of the Noe Pond Club informed members last month that the property on Southern Boulevard in Chatham Township has been sold to new owners and all operations there will end.
For members past and present, the news that the club will close after 65 years came as a shock.
"It was pretty devastating to find out Noe Pond was going to a developer, given the legacy, the history and the environmental aspects of the property," said Chatham Township Deputy Mayor Tracy Ness.
