Chet'la Sebree is the author of Field Study (FSG Originals, 2021), winner of the 2020 James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets. She is also the author of Mistress, selected by Cathy Park Hong as the winner of the 2018 New Issues Poetry Prize and nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work—Poetry. Her debut essay collection is forthcoming from The Dial Press in 2025.

My journey into the expanse of the lyric essay began when I opened Maggie Nelson’s Bluets. At that time, I had been writing poetry for over ten years, exploring motherhood, mental health, and my Asian American heritage. I saw my work as lyric poetry that drew from the bloodlines of my first love, Sharon Olds, and her transformative poem, “Monarchs.”

New Dominion Bookshop will host a reading with poets Chet’la Sebree and Kiki Petrosino on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 7-8 p.m.
Book sales and a signing will follow. This in-person event is free to attend and open to the public. The shop recommends arriving early for the best seating.
